During this passage from childhood to adolescence, middle school students are characterized by a need to explore a variety of interests, connecting their learning in the classroom to its practical application in life and work;high levels of activity coupled with frequent fatigue due to rapid growth; a search for their own unique identity as they begin turning more frequently to peers rather than parents for ideas and armation; extreme sensitivity to the comments from others, and heavy reliance on friends to provide comfort, understanding and approval. Identifying students' academic and social/emotional needs, as well as providing any necessary interventions is essential in removing barriers to learning and helping students develop skills and behaviors critical for academic achievement. The knowledge, attitudes and skills students acquire during these years build the foundation for future success. 10 KEYS TO TVS 6TH GRADE SUCCESS

#1 Sleep well: Teens and young adults should be getting 8-10 hours of sleep per night#2 Eat right: Take extra time to make sure your student is not only getting enough, but eating amix of everything you need (fruits, veggies, dairy and whole grains)#3 Do your homework: Help your student to create a homework routine, including doinghomework in the same place around the same time, with minimal distractions#4 Pay attention in class: Encourage your student to pay close attention in class, and discusswith them if they feel like they are struggling to focus#5 Get involved: Suggest your student to become involved with various activities at schooland around the community#6 Think positive: Try to help your student �nd the positive in situations, especially during thetough and overwhelming moments#7 Ask for help: Encourage your student to seek out and ask for help when they feel they needit. We are here to help!#8 Stay organized: A little organization goes a LONG way in sixth grade. Encourage studentsto write down homework and longer assignments in their school agenda.#9 Make goals: Discuss SMART goals with your student to achieve by the end of the quarter#10 Take risks: Communicate with your student as they grow through this year and �gure outwho they are in the world

REMINDERSHelp your child start off the school year on the right foot by making it a habit to get to schoolon time each day during the month of September.Regular attendance at the middle level is associated with positive outcomes in high school(see below)--NOW is the time for our student to develop healthy habits, including goodattendance!
