Second Sunday of Lent (Cycle A) A Sunday Reflection “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him” (Mt

17:5).

An ancient tradition holds that the Transfiguration took place forty days before Good Friday. Only a few days into the season of Lent, the Gospel presents us with this image of the Lord Jesus in His glory. The evangelist tells us that the disciples were terrified. This Jesus who has been walking with them is more than meets the eye. The voice of the Father from heaven echoes what we heard in the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord, but adds a command: “Listen to Him” (17:5), for in listening and following is our salvation.

As if to remind them of what is coming, as they go down the mountain Jesus orders them: “Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead” (17:9). They have seen Him in glory; soon they will see Him despised, beaten, crucified.

The mystery of the cross accompanies every Christian, from baptism until death. This Lent let us ask the Lord that we may find our glory in the cross, so that when He calls us to Himself we may be worthy to share in the heavenly banquet. God bless you.

Segundo Domingo de Cuaresma (Ciclo A)

Reflexión Dominical “Este es mi Hijo muy amado, en quien tengo puestas mis complacencias;

escúchenlo” (Mt 17,5).

Una antigua tradición sostiene que la Transfiguración ocurrió cuarenta días antes del Viernes Santo. A pocos días del comienzo de la Cuaresma, el Evangelio nos presenta esta imagen del Señor Jesús en Su gloria. El evangelista nos dice que los discípulos estaban aterrados. Hay algo más de lo que alcanza la vista en este Jesús que camina con ellos. La voz del Padre desde el cielo evoca lo que escuchamos en la fiesta del Bautismo del Señor, pero añade un mandato: “Escúchenlo” (17,5), porque en escucharlo y seguirlo está nuestra salvación.

Al bajar del monte, como para recordarles lo que se avecina, Jesús les ordena: “No le cuenten a nadie lo que han visto, hasta que el Hijo del hombre haya resucitado de entre los muertos” (17,9). Acaban de verlo glorioso; pronto lo verán despreciado, golpeado, crucificado.

El misterio de la cruz acompaña a todo cristiano desde el bautismo hasta la muerte. Esta Cuaresma pidamos al Señor que sepamos encontrar nuestra gloria en la cruz, de manera que cuando Él nos llame a Sí seamos dignos de participar en el banquete celestial. Que Dios los bendiga.

Things to give up for Lent other than chocolate WITH EVERY LENT comes the inevitable yearly dilemma of what to give up. Chocolate, desserts, and other tasty foods are a classic choice for many people. One crucial thing to keep in mind is that Lent has three pillars: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Fasting is just one piece of the puzzle for having a meaningful Lent. While these suggestions focus on fasting, don’t forget the other two pillars as well.

1. Lent is the perfect time to fast from SCREENS, whether TV, random web surfing or social media until Easter. Consider going screen-free one day a week or using your phone only for calling and texting.

2. COMPLAINING. This Lent, see if you can hold back your complaints and focus on something to be grateful for instead.

3. HOT SHOWERS. This is a simple sacrifice, but a powerful little way to practice self-denial in daily life.

4. SHOPPING. Give up spending money on anything but the essentials, and perhaps use the money you save to give as alms.

5. SNACKING BETWEEN MEALS, a tough habit to break but a great way to enter into the Lenten spirit of fasting.

Qué sacrificar en la Cuaresma que no sea chocolate

CON LA LLEGADA DE LA CUARESMA nos enfrentamos al dilema anual de qué sacrificar. El chocolate, los postres y otras comidas sabrosas son lo clásico para muchas personas. Pero tengamos en mente que la Cuaresma tiene tres pilares: oración, sacrificio y limosna. El ayuno es solo una pieza del rompecabezas para una santa Cuaresma, y aunque estas sugerencias se enfocan en él, no debemos olvidarnos de los otros dos pilares.

1. La Cuaresma es el momento perfecto para ayunar de las PANTALLAS, bien sea la tele, el internet o las redes sociales, hasta la Pascua. Considere no usarlas durante un día a la semana, o usar su teléfono solo para llamadas y textos.

2. Las QUEJAS. Esta Cuaresma, vea si puede dejar de quejarse un poco y encontrar algo por lo que dar gracias en vez.

3. Las DUCHAS CALIENTES. Es un sacrificio sencillo, pero una gran manera de practicar el ascetismo y negarse un poco en la vida diaria.

4. Las COMPRAS. Trate de gastar solo en lo esencial y quizás use el dinero que ha ahorrado para darlo como limosna.

5. COMER ENTRE COMIDAS, un hábito duro de romper, pero una gran manera de entrar en el espírtu del ayuno cuaresmal.

This Lent take part in the 40 Mass challenge! Holy Lives / Vidas Santas VENERABLE JULIA NAVARRETE GUERRERO (1881-1974) —

Born in 1881 to pious parents, from her childhood she maintained a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother and to

the Sacred Heart that she went on to promote throughout her life.

She founded the Missionary Daughters of the Most Pure Virgin Mary in 1903. The Bishop of Aguascalientes José María

Portugal Serrato approved the order's constitution and entrusted her to open a school, granting diocesan canonical

approval for her order.

Mother Julia suffered through the religious persecution that took place in Mexico, travelling to Texas where she

established a school in 1916. During the time she headed her religious congregation she founded 51 schools and

missions in total in both Mexico and the United States for the secular and religious education for children.

A dynamic and creative missionary, Mother Julia died in Toluca, Mexico, in 1974. St. John Paul II declared her Venerable in 2004. Her brother Juan María became the Archbishop of

Hermosillo and his cause of beatification is also ongoing.

VENERABLE JULIA NAVARRETE GUERRERO (1881-1974) — Nacida en 1881, hija de padres piadosos, desde su niñez tuvo una profunda devoción a la Santísima Virgen y al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, que promovería durante toda su vida.

Fundadora de las Misioneras Hijas de la Purísima Virgen María en 1903, congregación aprobada por el Obispo de Aguascalientes José María Portugal Serrato, quien, además de conceder a la congregación la aprobación canónica diocesana, le confió la fundación de una escuela.

La Madre Julia sufrió la persecución religiosa en México y viajó a Texas, donde estableció una escuela en 1916. Durante sus años al frente de la congregación, fundó un total de 51 escuelas y misiones tanto en México como en Estados Unidos, para la educación secular y religiosa de los niños.

Misionera dinámica y creativa, la Madre Julia murió en Toluca, México, en 1974 y fue declarada Venerable por San Juan Pablo II en 2004. La causa de beatificación de su hermano Juan María, arzobispo de Hermosillo, también está en proceso.

The Pope Speaks / Habla el Papa

Lenten Message 2020 “We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God” (2 Cor 5:20)

In this Lent of 2020, I would like to share with every Christian what I wrote to young people in the Apostolic Exhortation Christus

Vivit: “Keep your eyes fixed on the outstretched arms of Christ crucified, let yourself be saved over and over again. And when you go to confess your sins, believe firmly in his mercy which frees you

of your guilt. Contemplate his blood poured out with such great love, and let yourself be cleansed by it. In this way, you can be reborn ever anew” (No. 123). Jesus’ Pasch is not a past event;

rather, through the power of the Holy Spirit it is ever present, enabling us to see and touch with faith the flesh of Christ in those who suffer.

It is good to contemplate more deeply the paschal mystery through which God’s mercy has been bestowed upon us. Indeed, the experience of mercy is only possible in a “face to face” relationship with the crucified and risen Lord “who loved me and

gave himself for me” (Gal 2:20), in a heartfelt dialogue between friends. That is why prayer is so important in Lent.

Mensaje de Cuaresma 2020 «En nombre de Cristo os pedimos que os reconciliéis con Dios» (2 Co 5,20)

Por eso, en esta Cuaresma 2020 quisiera dirigir a todos y cada uno de los cristianos lo que ya escribí a los jóvenes en la Exhortación apostólica Christus vivit: «Mira los brazos abiertos de Cristo crucificado, déjate salvar una y otra vez. Y cuando te acerques a confesar tus pecados, cree firmemente en su misericordia que te libera de la culpa. Contempla su sangre derramada con tanto cariño y déjate purificar por ella. Así podrás renacer, una y otra vez» (n. 123). La Pascua de Jesús no es un acontecimiento del pasado: por el poder del Espíritu Santo es siempre actual y nos permite mirar y tocar con fe la carne de Cristo en tantas personas que sufren.

Es saludable contemplar más a fondo el Misterio pascual, por el que hemos recibido la misericordia de Dios. La experiencia de la misericordia, efectivamente, es posible sólo en un «cara a cara» con el Señor crucificado y resucitado «que me amó y se entregó por mí» (Ga 2,20). Un diálogo de corazón a corazón, de amigo a amigo. Por eso la oración es tan importante en el tiempo cuaresmal.

meatless meals are permitted. Abstinence is to be observed on all Fridays of Lent as well as Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Catholics

14 years and older are bound to abstain from meat.

On February 18 and 19, Black history projects were on display in the school hallway. Thank you Mrs. Gómez for organizing such a wonderful display.

On Friday, February 21, we celebrated the 800th anniversary of the canonization of our patron, Saint Hugh of Lincoln, recognized the student of the month recipients and congratulated the Future City participants on their accomplishments.

Our students, teacher, and mentor participated in the National Future City competition, winning two distinguished awards: "Most Advanced SMART GRID" presented by the engineers of IEEE-USA and "Mission Possible: Positively Impacting the Community" presented by the National Society of Black Engineers.
