WelcomeClybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs delivers training to the Playwork and childcare sectors focusing on those who either work, or want to work, in the out of school childcare sector or who are involved in managing out of school childcare clubs.

On the following pages you will find details of the training courses and qualifications that we currently offer which include:

• Accredited qualifications for Playworkers which are on the List of Required Qualifications to work within the Playwork Sector in Wales and which meet registration requirements. This includes information on Apprenticeships

• Underpinning knowledge courses covering the individual subject areas that enable staff to meet the National Minimum Standards for Regulated Daycare and offer opportunities for Continuing Professional Development

• Business and Committee Skills to help you to manage and run your business efficiently making use of our specially developed resources Ready, Steady Go, Stepping Out and Nuts and Bolts

• Activities workshops that can be delivered to Playworkers either “hands-on” in the childcare setting or at group based sessions to develop your skills and ideas in facilitating play with children.

Certificates of attendance are given to participants of all non accredited training.

Training an average of 5000 learners each year, evaluations of our trainers and content of our training is high scoring 4.7out of a possible 5.

We constantly review and update our training materials so that you can be sure that your learning is current. Our trainers and assessors are an experienced and occupationally expert team who will aim to make sure that your learning experience is enjoyable and motivating.

Accredited Qualifications

Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs has delivered accredited training for over 10 years. Approved by Agored Cymru, NCFE CACHE (Northern Council for Further Education & Council for Awards in Care, Health and Education) and by City and Guilds, we offer qualifications in Playwork and Essentials Skills Wales as well as Apprenticeships.

NCFE CACHE Level 2 Diploma in Playwork (NVQ)

OverviewBased on the Playwork Principles and the National Occupational Standards for Playwork, this is a Nationally recognised Level 2 qualification and is recognised by CIW for registration purposes. This qualification is on SkillsActive’s List of Required Qualifications to work within the Playwork sector in Wales.

The qualification is delivered using a variety of delivery and assessment methods, at centre based learning and in the workplace. All learners will need to be in employment or volunteering in a work placement in a play setting and have approval from their employer to enrol on this course.

Centre based sessions may be delivered in weekly evening sessions or monthly all day sessions over a period of 6-9 months. In order to complete the full Diploma, learners will be expected to produce a portfolio of evidence and be available to be assessed and observed regularly in their workplace. The qualification can be achieved in 12 months.

AimsThis qualification is an introduction to the primary aspects of working with children and young people between the ages of 4 to 16 in play environments. It provides an understanding of the importance of play and Playwork in children and young peoples lives.

The Diploma covers the knowledge and skills needed when working under supervision and requires learners to demonstrate the full application of these in the workplace, and is aimed at those who wish to work in a supervised role in a wide range of play environments.

Subjects CoveredThe qualification will be delivered at group learning sessions and cover the following subject areas:• Playwork Principles• Children’s Rights and Participation • Safeguarding and Welfare of Children• Health and Safety• Paediatric First Aid • Equal Opportunities• Supporting Positive Relationships in a Play Environment• Reflective Practice • Developing own practice and teamwork

Suitable ForNew and experienced Playworkers. Those currently not working in a play setting with children up to 16 years old will need a placement of at least 5 hours a week to be assessed for competence. Holiday scheme Playworkers are welcome to enrol but we would strongly recommend that, if possible, a term time placement is also undertaken so that continual assessment can take place.

Minimum age of learner is 16. Learners can progress to Level 3 Playwork qualifications.

NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Playwork (NVQ)

OverviewThis is a Nationally recognised Level 3 qualification. This qualification is listed on the SkillsActive list of Required Qualifications to work within the Playwork sector in Wales and is recognised by CIW for registration. Progression is to Level 4 or 5 Playwork qualifications.

Delivery of this qualification will involve attending regular group learning sessions (for approximately one year) and also being assessed in the workplace. In order to complete the Diploma, learners will need to produce a portfolio of evidence and be working or volunteering regularly in a play setting so that they can be assessed in the workplace. Employers will be asked to agree to their staff being assessed at work. This qualification can be achieved in 18 months or less.

AimsThis qualification provides in-depth information about the role of the Level 3 Playworker when working with children and young people between the ages of 4 to 16. It allows learners to gain an understanding of the management of play environments and the line management of other staff.

Suitable ForExperienced Playworkers, preferably holding Level 2 Playwork qualifications who are employed as the person in charge or deputising for that role and want to progress to a management role.

Minimum age of learner is 18.

Learners can progress to a Foundation Degree.

NCFE CACHE Level 3 Award in Transition to Playwork (from Early Years)

OverviewThis qualification is based on the National Occupational Standards for Playwork and has been developed for Early Years practitioners who would like to broaden their knowledge and work in Playwork settings. This qualification is listed on SkillsActive List of Required Qualifications to work within the Playwork sector in Wales and is recognised by CIW for Registration.

The units cover the theories and principles of play and Playwork Principles and how to support the needs and rights of children to create diverse, inclusive play environments. They also cover how to support children and young people to manage risk, establishing and maintaining links with other organisations and individuals, and organisational frameworks. It does not confirm occupational competence as a Playworker.

Learners will need to be working or volunteering in a play setting so that they can draw on and reflect on their experience. There is no work based assessment for this Award. Learners will be asked to produce a portfolio of evidence. Covering 7 assignments.

Delivery of this qualification will involve attending group learning sessions over a term. This course is planned to enable ample time for implementation of theory to practice and reflection (delivered over 13 x 2.5 hour sessions or 5 full days).

AimsThis qualification provides an excellent Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunity for Level 3 CCLD or equivalent qualified staff who are working in or want to work in a play setting.

Apprenticeships in Playwork

OverviewApprenticeships are a great way for you to gain recognised qualifications and essential skills while earning a wage.The workplace experience that you will gain during your apprenticeship will stay with you for life, and it has never been a better time to have marketable skills. You’ll share your learning between Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs as your training provider and working in your employer’s business, so you will gain both qualifications and the experience to back them up.The Welsh Government has defined a Foundation Apprenticeship as being equivalent to five good GCSE passes. An Apprenticeship is equivalent to 2 A level passes.Delivery of this qualification will involve attending regular group learning sessions and also being assessed in the workplace.Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs is sub contracted to Torfaen Training to deliver Welsh Government funded Foundation Apprenticeships and Apprenticeships in Playwork.

AimsTo enable Playworkers to gain nationally recognised qualifications whilst in employment and learn “on the job.”

Agored Cymru Level 3 Award in Managing Holiday Play Scheme in Wales

OverviewThe Level 3 Award in Managing Holiday Play Scheme in Wales is a short course that provides an insight into leading a holiday play-based setting. Taking into consideration that many holiday clubs may only run for short periods this course provides professional development for those managers who do not currently hold a playwork qualification; ensuring that the provision is compliant with the National Minimum Standard. This course enables the manager to register as qualified in the interim between being appointed and achieving a full level 3. It is also suitable for those who will only be managing in the short term. Delivered through practical activities, discussions and written work the qualification is both engaging and interesting. Offered over 4 full day training sessions the course works with leaders to develop the knowledge and skills to lead and manage a holiday play scheme.

AimsThe aim of the qualification is to provide the staff managing the short term provision the opportunity to gain a qualification that enables the participant to gain knowledge of not only playwork practice but also how children’s development can be facilitated through play. It is not considered an alternative to the full level 3 rather a short term course that qualifies the manager either for a temporary managerial/leadership role or to cover them in the interim between recruitment and achieving the full level 3.

Suitable ForTo enrol on the Level 3 Award in Managing Holiday Play Scheme in Wales participants must be 19 years old or over, have experience working in a play-based setting and hold a relevant qualification such as teaching or Youth work at a minimum of level 3

Agored Cymru Level 2 Award in Playwork Practice

OverviewThe Level 2 Award in Playwork Practice was devised as a response to the need for staff to achieve a playwork qualification when they are working in a childcare setting that is registered for children up to the age of 12 and who already hold a level 2 childcare qualification. It can also support similar staff in Out of School Childcare who are working with other qualified staff.The delivery of this course is through engaging with taught sessions which provide both knowledge and practical experience. Alongside this those completing the course will be expected to work in a play-based provision.Delivered over 4 full day sessions, the training enables the qualification to be completed over a short timescale whilst also providing time for participants to reflect on their learning and explore what they have learned in practice.

AimsThe aim of the qualification was created in direct response to the Welsh Government’s statutory guidance, Wales – A Play Friendly Country (2014). The Level 2 Award in Playwork Practice supports organisations to develop their workforce to meet the required qualifications and gives staff members an insight into playwork.

Level 3 Award in Paediatric Emergency First Aid (QCF)

OverviewThe Level 3 Award in Paediatric Emergency First Aid (QCF) has been specifically designed for Learners who are working in an early years setting. It will provide Learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding on how to provide effective first aid on paediatric casualties. This is a one day course (6 hours) held at a Training Centre. The qualification lasts for a period of 3 years, after which learners will need to repeat the course, however it is recommended that learners refresh their knowledge annually.

AimsThis award in Paediatric Emergency First Aid (QCF) provides learners with the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of first aid to enable them to provide care and manage life threatening conditions, illness and injuries in early years settings. It offers the opportunity for those involved in early years settings to provide quality and effective first aid care. This is achieved through an understanding of the general duties, responsibilities and treatment principles of first aid. The objectives of the qualification include supporting a role in the workplace and giving learners personal growth and engagement in learning.

All Wales Basic Safeguarding Awareness

OverviewBetween 2013 and 2014 the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) and the Care Council for Wales worked in partnership to develop a Basic Safeguarding Awareness training programme that could be used for those supporting children, young people and adults. The training pack, launched in September 2014, was based on the Social Care Induction Framework Quality Assured Lifelong Learning (SCIF QALL) unit, Induction to Safeguarding and has been adapted by Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs for relevance to the childcare and play sector.

A one day (6 hour) course or a two day (2 x 3 hour) course held at a Training Centre. This course can be delivered as accredited or non-accredited.

AimsThe course has been designed to convey key values and principles in the safeguarding of individuals and to provide those who provide care or support with the basic foundation knowledge. It is expected that those taking part would undertake further training and learning relevant to the individuals they support, children or adults.

OverviewChildren’s Rights and Participation are at the heart of all those who work with children. It is essential that Playworkers implement their knowledge and understanding of children’s participation. A chance to develop new enjoyable ways of consulting and feeding back when working with children.

A one day (6 hour) course or a two day (2 x 3 hour) course held at a Training Centre.

AimsProvides learners with an introduction to Children’s Rights and the National Children and Young People’s Participation Standards and their relevance to Playwork practice.

Developing Own Playwork and Team Practice

OverviewPlayworkers need to be able to reflect on and improve their practice and work alongside team members. This course provides the foundations to help to develop individual Playwork Practice.

A one day (6 hour) course or a two day (2 x 3 hour) course held at a Training Centre.

AimsProvides learners with the tools needed to identify their own strengths and areas to develop in their working practice.

Subjects Covered• Identifying goals and targets for continuing development• The role of colleagues and managers in helping individuals to develop their skills and knowledge • The importance of Continued Professional Development• Identifying ways to review and improve individual practice • Working as a team member- identifying own role and responsibility within a team • Communication for teams• Handling differences and conflict within your team

Inclusive Practice

OverviewPlayworkers are not only responsible for ensuring that their own practice is fair and non–discriminatory, they also need to be able to challenge discrimination and promote equal opportunities within the play environment. This course enables learners to reflect on their current practice.

AimsEnables Playworkers to develop an awareness of Equal Opportunities and how to develop inclusive practice within play provision.

Getting Risk Right

OverviewStuck when it comes to writing risk assessments? Not sure how you balance risk and benefits against health and safety in your play setting? Then our Getting Risk Right course is for you. Come and join us on this practical workshop and learn to Get Risk Right.

A one day (6 hour) course or a two day (2 x 3 hour) course held at a Training Centre.

AimsTo introduce Playworkers to effective and sensible risk management within play environments drawing upon recent and relevant legislation. It is recommended that those attending have prior working knowledge of health and safety.

OverviewEvery Playworker needs to know and work to this set of Principles which are at the core of their work. This course provides an excellent opportunity for continuing professional development for those Playworkers who qualified a number of years ago.

Delivered over 8 (2.5 hour) sessions held at a Training Centre.

AimsDesigned to introduce learners to the Playwork Principles, it covers the eight Principles that are now recognised as the foundations for Playwork practice.

OverviewA course which provides learners with an understanding of the importance of Reflective Practice for Playworkers so that they are equipped to use reflective practice for self improvement and in working within their teams.

A one day (6 hour) course held at a Training Centre.

AimsTo look at the principles of Reflective Practice and ways to develop reflective practice and use it to give and receive feedback to improve the quality of play settings.

Supporting Positive Relationships OverviewThis course provides information for Playworkers about the different types of relationships that exist in a play environment taking account all of the different stakeholders who are involved in attending and supporting children and young people’s opportunities for play.

A one day (6 hour) course held at a Training Centre.

AimsThe course looks at strategies for supporting effective communication and promoting positive relationships in a play setting and how to deal with conflict should it arise.

Buddying Workshop

OverviewTo Introduce buddying or peer led activities where slightly older children help younger children to engage in different activities providing support, guidance and encouragement to carry out a range of different tasks.

Buddying also improves children’s participation for both buddies and younger children. Opportunities are provided for older children to take responsibility for setting up activities, carrying out risk assessments and adapting activities to suit all children taking part including disabled children.Younger children have opportunities to participate in activities led by their peers and this provides a non threatening environment where there is less anxiety about “getting it wrong”.

This can be a 1 hour workshop within your setting or 2 hours workshop in a Training Centre.

AimsTo work with selected children and young people and train them to be buddies. Using the resources in our Healthy Friends Pack to support them to engage younger children within your setting in activities which promote healthy lifestyles and choices.

Healthy Friends

OverviewThe Healthy Friends workshop provides information and guidance on setting up a buddy system within individual settings. Allowing older children to lead on activities with younger children, this workshop can help all children improve their physical activity and nutrition levels through a range of peer led, fun, healthy activities. Playworker led activities to raise awareness of the risks of smoking and alcohol linking with Welsh Government Initiatives. In addition, an activity box with 86 bilingual activity cards is provided to each setting.

Nature Zone

OverviewNature Zone has recently been updated through funding we have received from Ernest Cook Trust, The Brecon Beaons National Park, The Beacons Trust, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park (Welsh Government Sustainable Development Fund) , South Hook LNG Community Fund, City and County of Swansea, Hanfod Cymru, Gower AONB (Welsh Government Sustainable Development Fund) Cronfa Eryri. Magnox and Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd.Delivered to Playworkers using environmental activities from the Nature Zone resource. All participants will receive a free copy of Nature Zone. An opportunity to look at the bigger environmental picture. A 2 hour workshop in a training centre or 1 hour within your setting.

AimsTThis workshop provides Playworkers with practical play activity ideas (indoor and out) to improve environmental awareness and environmentally friendly practice in clubs.

Participants will:

• Be shown how to use Nature Zone• Have an opportunity to try some activities and discuss how to facilitate these with children and young people• Know how to find out about other relevant resources, organisations and initiatives

This course can be delivered to Playworkers at a training centre or as “on the job” training in your Out of School Club whilst you are working.

OverviewExperience fun activities all based around the elements in the outside environment. A practical one day course in outdoor play for those working with children and young people.

A one day (6 hour) workshop in a training centre or a 1 hour workshop delivered within your setting.

AimsThis workshop trains Playworkers in outdoor environments and in the workplace, introducing participants to the elements of earth, air, fire and water as stimuli for children’s play.

Participants will:

• Plan and prepare for children’s outdoor play with the elements of earth, air, fire and water

• Learn the concept of affordance in relation to playing with the elements

• Describe the benefits and barriers to providing outdoor play with the elements

Playworkers' Toolbelt

OverviewThe Playworkers' Toolbelt will give Playworkers the skills they need to provide children and young people access to an enriched quality play service. The training will support the development of a quality play provision based on reflective practice and reactive to children and young people’s play needs and wants.

Learners will receive a Toolbelt and a badge for each course attended to add to it.

AimsThe ‘Toolbelt’ will enable Playworkers to build up a bank of ideas which they can use to effectively respond to those needs and wants.

OverviewWe are currently developing our Science Zone Pack which is all about exploring STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) through fun, challenging experiments. Playing RenewableThe workshop was developed with funding from the Nineveh Trust and focuses on the theme of Renewable Energy and looks at solar, wind and water sources of renewable energy through a number of different experiments.

The Renewable Energy workshops will provide Playworkers with a whole host of new activities that they can take back to their settings and use on an ongoing regular basis with the children that attend.

Sky Play Sky Play, The Out of School Way was developed with funding from the Science and Technologies Facilities Council. The project aims to inspire children aged 4-14 years old to engage with STEM subjects in a fun way learning through play. The project enabled us to develop 10 science activity cards to use within an Out of School Childcare Club.

Turn Your Why’s Into WiseThe ‘Turn your whys into wise’ was funded by British Science Week. We asked children and young people in Out of School Childcare Clubs to send in their questions. We developed 6 activities to explain the answers to their questions. • Why is the grass green?• How do people make rockets?• How do batteries work?• How is blood made?• When you stop spinning why does it feel like the world is still spinning?• How does mould work?A 2 hour workshop in a club or 2 hours in a training centre.

First Aid Awareness For Kids

OverviewA basic in club workshop designed to encourage children’s knowledge of what to do in an emergency. With a range of practical activities, the children can explore simple first aid techniques.

AimsThis workshop will support children in Out of School Childcare Clubs to gain knowledge of, and confidence in, responding to minor injuries through the use of relevant first aid techniques.

There is no charge for transferring your booking to the same course on an alternative date, as long as the Purchaser notifies Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs in writing no less than 28 days prior to the course start date, and is subject to availability. Each course may only be transferred once without charge.

2. A course transfer fee of 20% of the course cost will be payable if notice is received less than 28 days before the start of the original course.

3. A course transfer fee of 10% of the course cost will be payable for additional changes to date, time or venue, but these changes MUST be agreed prior to 28 days before the course start date.

4. All transfer fees must be paid within 28 days of receipt of an invoice from Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs.

Terms & ConditionsBooking your courseIf you would like to book a course or workshop please speak to you Childcare Business Development Officer or call your Regional Office to arrange.

Courses need to be booked 8 weeks in advance of the start date. All courses must be paid for 2 weeks in advance of the course start date.

Cancellation: If you are unable to attend any booked sessions, you MUST provide at least 48 hours notice. If you fail to attend a session, and do not provide adequate notice, you will be charged a non-attendance fee.

Cancelling your courseBy purchasing a course/workshop from Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs, you agree to the following cancellation terms:

1. All notifications to cancel courses/workshops must be in writing, addressed to Jane O’Toole, Chief Executive Officer, Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs, Bridge House, Station Road, Llanishen, Cardiff, CF14 5UW or by email to [email protected]

2. Notifications in writing received up to 42 days (6 weeks) prior to the course start date will not incur a cancellation charge. Courses paid for in advance will be refunded in full.

3. Notifications in writing received up to 28 days (4 weeks) prior to the course start date will incur a cancellation charge of 20% of the total course cost. Purchasers who have paid for the course in advance will receive a refund of 80% of the course cost.

4. Notifications in writing received up to 14 days (2 weeks) prior to the course start date will incur a cancellation charge of 50% of the total course cost. Purchasers who have paid
