Grade 9 Unit- AdaptationIf an animal or plant is to survive it must be able to fit in with the environmental conditions which occur in its habitat. This ‘fitting in’ is called adaptation. Every living thing is adapted to enable it to cope with a particular habitat’s environmental factors, such as the air, water, soil, light and temperature. For example, cacti plants are adapted to be able to withstand the dry conditions of a desert, whereas seaweeds are designed to live in salty water – neither would survive if they changed places!

1 1-Adaptation according to some inherited features:Animals and plants may have special features that help them survive in the environment. The better adapted individuals tend to survive. They produce similar offspring with the same features.

This is how natural selection operates, for instance, different birds have different beaks that are adapted for a particular diet.

التكيف وفقا لبعض الميزات الموروثة ) تكيفتركيبي( :

A camel lives in the hot, dry desert. Winds blow sand all around, so a camel has long eyelashes. The long eyelashes keep sand out of its eyes. Its nostrils can close so it doesn't get sand up its nose. The camel has long thin legs, it has no layer of fat under the skin. These are adaptations that a camel has that help it live in the dry, sandy desert

This helps it stay warm. It has very wide, large paws. help it walk in the snow. These are three adaptations a polar bear has to its Arctic environment.

لنباتات الصبار قدرة على العيش المناطق الصحراوية وذلك األتي للصبار جذوع سميكة لتخزين المياه. الصبار يمتلك أوراق شوكيه

لتقلل تبخر المياه . كما انه مغطى بطبقة شمعية لتقلل التبخر ايضا. بعض انواع الصبار تمتلك جذور طويلة تمتد افقيا لمسافات شاسعة

.والبعض االخر له جذور عميقة المتصاص المياه
