Rivers provide many contributions to human well-being : water for household consumption, irrigation and industry; sustainable energy; convenient transportation links and valuable wild-life habitats. Rivers also bring threats in the form of flooding and geomorphic hazards. The conflicting pressures which result have reached new heights during the last century.

The need for observation, analysis and control of fluvial processes has thus also increased dramatically. The discipline of River Hydraulics is more than ever solicited to guide engineering works, evaluate environmental impacts, and mitigate hazards. At the same time, new modelling tools emerge from advances in physical understanding, computational methods and measurement techniques.

Researchers involved in these developments are cordially invited to attend River Flow 2002. Organised under the auspices of the Fluvial Hydraulics and Eco-Hydraulics Sections of the International Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research (IAHR), this international conference will constitute a forum for all scientists and engineers working on the modelling of river hydraulics processes.

The conference will cover both hydrodynamic and sediment transport phenomena. Contributions from theoretical endeavours, numerical developments, experimental investigations and field studies are equally welcome. It is a specific aim of the conference to bring together practitioners of these different approaches.

Moreover, aiming to foster exchanges between senior researchers and young investigators, Master Classes on five selected topics in Fluvial Hydraulics will be offered to student participants at the opening of the conference.

The UCL, founded in 1425 by Pope Martin V, is one of the oldest European Universities, settled in one of the youngest cities in Europe. Indeed, Louvain-la-Neuve was only created in 1971, when the550 years old University of Louvain divided into two separate universities. The Flemish university remained in the historic city of Leuven while the French-speaking section moved to a new town,30 km south of Brussels.

Thirty years later, it is perceptible that the urban designers, supported by the whole University, have achieved the challenge of building a true city rather than an academic campus. With 25 000 inhabitants, the pedestrian-friendly Louvain-la-Neuve has become a major social, cultural and economic centre in its area.

Papers in the above or related fields are solicited.

Authors should submit a 20 lines abstract to Didier Bousmar, Conference secretary, before November 1, 2001. Electronic submission at the Email address RiverFlow@gc.ucl.ac.be is preferred. Abstracts will be reviewed to ensure the proposed papers enter the conference topics and notification of preliminary acceptance will be sent around November 15, 2001. Final acceptance, however, will be subject to peer-review of the full-paper manuscript.

The full-paper manuscript* should be send to Didier Bousmar, before January 15, 2002. The maximum length of a paper will be 10 pages, in order to allow the authors to provide comprehensive developments and details on their work. All the contributions will be reviewed by the International Scientific Committee and authors will be informed of paper acceptance around April 15, 2002.

Camera-ready manuscripts including all revisions and corrections should be received by the Conference secretariat no later than May 15, 2002. The Conference Proceedings volume, printed by an international publisher, will be available to the participants at the Conference opening.

* Instructions for paper preparation will be available through the conference Web site. The conference language is English, and no translation facilities will be provided.

Enabling young investigators to meet senior researchers in their field, five parallel Master Classes will be organised the day preceding the formal opening of the River Flow 2002 Conference.

In each Master Class, 5-6 young researchers (typically PhD students) will join 2 experts of their research field for a complete day of discussions and exchanges. Typical organisation of the day will be the following : The morning will be dedicated to in-depth presentation of their work by the students (around 45 minutes each). Then, after a lunch taken together, the full afternoon would be devoted to feed-back from the experts, discussions between experts and students, as well as exchanges among the students themselves.

It is anticipated that such a Master Class will be a unique opportunity for students to address senior scientists, meet peers working on similar topics, and maybe identify possible collaborations for the continuation of their PhD work. Participation in the Master Class will provide educational credit.

Five topics were chosen for the parallel Classes. They correspond to monographs prepared under the auspices of the IAHR Fluvial Hydraulics section, including recently published volumes and works currently in progress. The topics and invited Masters will be :

The Master Classes are intended for PhD students or young researchers working on the above topics. The participating students of each Class will be selected by the Masters, on the basis of a resume and a short description of their research work. The selection will take into account the quality and the innovative aspect of the student work, but will also attempt to equilibrate different aspects of the examined topic. Interested applicants should return their inscription form to the Conference secretary as soon as possible and no later than April 1, 2002.

Students who are not selected will have the possibility to attend the Master Classes as observers. Participation in the Master Classes is included in the student registration fee to the conference. Other participants to the conference wishing to attend the Classes are invited to contact the conference secretariat.

During the conference, a technical exhibition is planned for continuous display of products, software, instruments and publications in Fluvial Hydraulics. Interested companies are invited to take contact with the Local Organising Committee for further information.

On Wednesday September 4, an evening reception will be offered to all the delegates enabling them to discover (or to enjoy once more) famous Belgian beers and cheeses. On Thursday September 5, the Conference Banquet will bring participants to one of Brussels' celebrated gastronomic venues, following a guided tour of the city.

An accompanying person program will be proposed, depending on the number of interested persons. It would include a visit of Louvain-la-Neuve and surrounding places (Villers-la-Ville Abbey ruins, etc.), one day in Brussels (outdoor visits, museum, shopping) and one day in Brugge (The "Venice of the North", one of the nicest Belgian towns that was the main trade

th thcentre of Northern Europe from the 14 to the 16 century).

A one day post-conference tour will be proposed on Saturday September 7.

Participants will be offered the opportunity to discover the exceptional four hydraulic boat-lifts on the historic Canal du Centre. Those remarkably well-preserved and complete industrial monuments, built at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century are still in operation. They are now inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The tour will also visit their modern substitute : the new boat-lift of Strépy-Thieu (73 m high, for 1350 tons boats) and the 1430 m length and 70 m high inclined lift of Ronquières. Several locations of social and cultural interest will also be included.

The participation fee, including bus transfer, boat cruise and lunch, is 65 Euro.

thRiver Flow 2002 will be organised in connection with the 11 International Conference on Transport and Sedimentation of Solid Particles, to be held the week after, on September 9-12, 2002, at Gent, Belgium, 60 km north of Louvain-la-Neuve.

The T&S conference is expected to cover all the aspects of conveyance of solids by fluids, motion of solids and solid-fluid interaction in closed and open conduits. The aspects of interest include : two-phase and multiphase flow, Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow; designing, optimization and operation of hydrotransport system solids, wear and corrosions, pumps and valves; sediment transport in rivers and water reservoirs, hydraulic storage of tailing, sedimentation and thickening; measurement methods and techniques, field and laboratory instrumentation, industrial systems.

Delegates to River Flow 2002 who also attend the Conference on Transport and Sedimentation of Solid Particles will benefit from a reduced registration fee and will be offered the River Flow 2002 post-conference tour.

The conference fee covers the technical sessions, one copy of the conference proceeding, coffee breaks and three lunches, the opening reception and the conference banquet. Moreover, the student fee also includes participation in the Master Classes.

Special rates have been negotiated with several hotels in and around Louvain-la-Neuve. Participants are kindly invited to contact the hotels directly for accommodation booking. When contacting these hotels, please specify that you are a delegate at the River Flow 2002 conference. It is recommended to book quickly due to the important number of congresses in Louvain-la-Neuve at the same time.

thRiver Flow 2002 will be organised in connection with the 11 International Conference on Transport and Sedimentation of Solid Particles, to be held the week after, on September 9-12, 2002, at Gent, Belgium, 60 km north of Louvain-la-Neuve.

The T&S conference is expected to cover all the aspects of conveyance of solids by fluids, motion of solids and solid-fluid interaction in closed and open conduits. The aspects of interest include : two-phase and multiphase flow, Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow; designing, optimization and operation of hydrotransport system solids, wear and corrosions, pumps and valves; sediment transport in rivers and water reservoirs, hydraulic storage of tailing, sedimentation and thickening; measurement methods and techniques, field and laboratory instrumentation, industrial systems.

Delegates to River Flow 2002 who also attend the Conference on Transport and Sedimentation of Solid Particles will benefit from a reduced registration fee and will be offered the River Flow 2002 post-conference tour.

The conference fee covers the technical sessions, one copy of the conference proceeding, coffee breaks and three lunches, the opening reception and the conference banquet. Moreover, the student fee also includes participation in the Master Classes.

Special rates have been negotiated with several hotels in and around Louvain-la-Neuve. Participants are kindly invited to contact the hotels directly for accommodation booking. When contacting these hotels, please specify that you are a delegate at the River Flow 2002 conference. It is recommended to book quickly due to the important number of congresses in Louvain-la-Neuve at the same time.
