Ludwig van Beethoven, composer (1770–1827). Autograph musical manuscript. No place, [c. 1821]. 2 pp. on a single leaf (110 × 95 mm). Ink and pencil on paper. € 650,000 Beethoven pens his ideas for the Sanctus, Benedictus, and Gloria sections of the Missa Solemnis. The earliest material, written on both sides in ink, is for the Sanctus and consists of modulatory material in D major in ¾ time – a notable difference from the finished work, which is in 2/4. Beethoven added the pencil portions of the manuscript later – likely after he began carrying this page as a pocket leaf, as evidenced by the central fold – with the passages on staves three through six on the front being part of the Gloria, and a section of the Benedictus on the lower half of the reverse, identified in Beethoven’s own hand as “2te Theil Benedict.” Unknown until 1996, this manuscript was discovered among the papers of Anton Schindler, Beethoven’s private secretary and earliest biographer. Schindler added a few ink and pencil marginal notations, labelling the piece along the bottom of the front (translated): “Sketch for the Sanctus of the Second Mass in ¾ meter.” He also identifies the sketches on the reverse in the left border (translated): “Idea for the Benedictus of the Second Mass.” The respected musicologist and Beethoven scholar William Kinderman describes this sketchleaf as “a noteworthy source that documents the genesis of the Sanctus as well as aspects of the genesis of the Benedictus and the Gloria.” This manuscript represents a stage in the development of the Missa Solemnis where the opening section and tonal balance begin to resemble the completed composition, despite the disparity in meter. A remarkable, once-in-a-lifetime piece: rarely does an item arise that offers such great insight into the creative process of genius – essentially unmatched in magnificence, this Beethoven manuscript is a true historical treasure. – In very good condition, with a central vertical fold, various edge chips and small tears, and two small toned tape remnants to edges of the front. Provenance: Sotheby’s, London, December 5, 1996.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, German poet (1749–1832). Letter signed. Weimar, 6 Feb. 1817. Folio. 1 p. on bifolium. With address. € 6,500 To the German actor and singer Anton Genast (1765–1831), releasing him from his duties as actor and director at the Court Theatre at Weimar, and assuring him of his pension entitlements. – Counter-signed by Franz Kirms (1750–1826, Goethe’s most valuable assistant in the Directorate), Minister of State Albert Cajetan von Ebling (1772–1841), and Goethe’s son Julius August Walther von Goethe. – Multiply folded and slightly foxed. – Small tear due to breaking seal (touching signature). An important document for the history of Weimarian and German theatre.

Lenin (Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov), Marxist thinker, founder of the Soviet Union (1870–1924). Autograph document signed (as “Membre du Bureau S. Int. Lénine”). Copenhagen, 30 Aug. 1910. 4to. 1 p. On headed paper “Internat. Socialist Kongres 1910”. € 180,000 “Je certifie par la présente que le camarade Pokrovsky est désigné par le groupe parlementaire socialdémocrate de la troisième Douma comme delegué au Bureau Socialiste international”. – Bolshevik Russian historian Mikhail Nikolayevich Pokrovsky (1868–1932) was head of the Institute of Red Professors from 1921 to 1931. In 1929, he was elected to the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Pokrovsky played a major role in the destruction of the non-Marxist historical tradition in Russia.

Karl Marx, philosopher and economist (1818–1883). Autograph manuscript. [Bruxelles, April–July 1845, with additional notes London 1861/63]. Oblong 4to (205 × 155 mm). Ink and pencil on paper. 49 pp., mostly written in two columns on both sides, on 27 ff. Sewn. In custom-made giltstamped morocco clamshell case with moirée silk lining. € 2,500,000 The long-lost “Fourth Brussels Notebook”: a substantive manuscript, mainly in French, written during the highly productive spring of 1845, when Marx in his Brussels exile embarked on the preliminary studies for his “Kritik der politischen Ökonomie” and the “Kapital”. Nearly two decades later, while preparing the “Kapital” manuscript, Marx added ten pages of calculations and mathematical notes: like most of the excerpts in the earlier portions of the volume, they would be included to a large extent in his magnum opus. One of the last great Marx manuscripts in private hands and the most extensive specimen to appear in the trade for 80 years.

Diderot, Denis & d’Alembert, Jean Le Rond. Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, par une Societé de gens de lettres. Mis en ordre & publié par M. Diderot [...]; & quant à la partie mathematique, par M. d’Alembert [...]. "Paris" [i. e., Geneva], "1751-1772" [i.e., 1771-1776]. Folio. 17 text vols., 11 plate vols., 5 vols. of supplements. Without the 2 index vols. Altogether 33 vols. with 3129 plates (doubles and triples counted as such) and the engraved frontispiece. Contemp. marbled calf, gilt, with double spine labels. € 75.000Complete copy of the second folio edition, issued simultaneously with the final volumes of the original edition and even reproducing its predecessor’s imprint down to the original years of publication. It can be distinguished from the first edition only by the missing accent over the word "Mathématique" and two additional composition errors in the title, for which reason the trade usually offers it as the original edition: indeed, among the more than fifty "Paris" folio editions of the "Encyclopédie" auctioned during the last decades, not a single one is identified as the Geneva reprint, although this edition’s press-run was fully half as great as that of the Paris original. – The supplement volumes, which "had no formal connection with the original ‘Encyclopédie’ and involved a new group of contributors" (Darnton 33), are here present in the 1776-1777 edit ion published in Paris and Amsterdam, which is generally treated as part of the Paris first edition. ¶ Lough 15-21 & 52-110. [Fourier, Charles]. Théorie des quatre mouvemens et des destinées générales. Prospectus et annonce de la découverte. Leipzig [i. e. Lyons, Pelzin], 1808. 8vo. (4), 425, (3) pp. With large folding table "Tableau du cours du mouvement social". Slightly later calf-backed marbled boards, flat back lettered in gilt, edges marbled to match boards. € 12.500First edition of the author’s first book, containing the essence of his principle of Association (or the union between men), driven by universal human passionate attraction but hampered by the forces of civilization. According to Fourier, an important precursor to Marx, social harmony can only be based upon this principle, and he was convinced that material abundance would be its result. – First and last leaves mildly duststained; marginal edge flaws to last and another leaf without affecting text. ¶ Del Bo p. 5. First (only) edition. A project for a loan-office, based upon the principles of probability developed by Leonhard Euler, published the same year in French as ‘Eclaircissemens sur les etablissements publics en faveur tant des veuves que des morts’, for which according to his present preface Fuss had done the calculations. Fuss was a Swiss mathematician who, recommended by Daniel Bernoulli, moved to Russia to become assistant of Leonhard Euler and since 1800 secretary of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. The exceedingly rare first volume was the only one to be completed by Marx in his lifetime, while the second and third volumes were completed posthumously by Engels from Marx’s papers (1885 and 1894). "The history of the twentieth century is Marx’s legacy [...] Within one hundred years of his death half the world’s population was ruled by governments that professed Marxism to be their guiding faith. His ideas have transformed the study of economics, history, geography, sociology, and literature" (Wheen). Marx, Karl. Kapital. Kritika politicheskoj ekonomii. Perevod c nmetskago. Tom pervoej. Kniga I. Protschess proizvodstva Kapitala. St. Petersburg, N. P. Poliakov, 1872. 8vo. (2), XIII, (3), 678 pp. Printed on very thick, heavy, vellum-like paper. Bound in a splendid, contemporary, Russian full diced calf binding with blindstamped and darker coloured rectangular "frames" to boards and to compartments of spine. Gilt title to spine. € 185.000First edition, first issue in Russian, the first translation of "Das Kapital" into any language: a truly magnificent copy of an otherwise unknown deluxe edition printed on special, very heavy paper, making it about 30% thicker than the usual first edition copies. – Although Marx’s other works were banned in Russia, the Tsarist censors passed "Das Kapital" as harmless on account of its length and complexity, and the book – rather unexpectedly – became an immediate success with the Russian intelligentsia in search of a theoretical model for industrializing their economically backward country. The press-run of 3000 copies was soon exhausted, and the ensuing ban on the book, when the board of censorship realized their error, prohibited the planned second edition (which was subsequently brought out in New York). The appearance on the market of any first edition has therefore become a great rarity. No mention of a deluxe edition is made at all in the vast bibliographical literature on "Das Kapital". While one could only speculate on the reason for preparing such a special edition, its number must have been extremely small, likely limited to no more than a handful of copies for a small, exclusive group – possibly to be sought among the young revolutionary intellectuals who had laboured for years to make possible the Russian translation, which soon was going to have such a profound effect on world history. This is the only such copy we have been able to locate. – A bit of wear to extremities and traces of faint dampstaining to boards. Inner front hinge slightly weak; the first few leaves with faint traces of slight dampstaining. Very light occasional brownspotting, otherwise fresh and crisp. Old Russian newspaper-clippings to endpapers. A uniquely produced specimen of one of the most influential books ever published.¶ Marx-Engels Erstdrucke 33. Cf. PMM 359.

[VIII], 208, [XII], 128, [4], [VIII], 129, [5], [VIII], 51 pp. With repeated vignette of a vessel on titles. Contemp. vellum, back with gilt label, red sprinkled edges. A very nice copy. € 3.500A handbook for merchants written by a "rich and learned" merchant who desired "to communicate to the world some collections about the establishment and maintenance of his business" (author’s preface). Palgrave however notes that the work "has much wider aims than the author would lead us to believe. It is a technical handbook for merchants, to teach them trading and book-keeping, treating at much length of the method of mercantile accounts called the system of double entry.

Saint-Simon, Claude Henri de. Mémoire sur la science de l’homme. [Signed at end: Henry de St Simon.]. [Paris, at end:] Rue des maçons Sorbonne, chez Didot, imprimeur de la faculté de médecine, [1813]. Manuscript of 120 leaves in a well legible hand. Folio. Some, mostly marginal repairs to first and last leaves, the last leaf with loss of a few words of text which have been added in a modern hand. Kept in a fine modern box. € 18.000First, manuscript edition, of utmost rarity. Written in a period that the author lived in utter poverty and hence could not afford having printed this text he let the publisher Didot make a number of manuscript copies. They were sent to some 30 "outstanding philosophers and physicians". This is an attempt to develop a truely positive social science based upon the methods of the natural sciences. Saint-Simon believed that society could be understood by its underlaying natural laws which would result in a social science capable of constructing a perfect society. His arguments for the scientific organization of society have been seen as "the first example of pure socialism [...] understood as an economic system in which production is entirely carried on in common and the fruits of labour distributed according to some ideal standard" (R. T. Ely). ¶ Mazzone 29. Walch p. 28 (listing Ms. nr 578 of the Museum d’Histoire Naturelle) and nr 82 (mentioning copies in the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal and in the Bibliothèque Thiers).
