Officially launched in January 2001, we designed our agency as a studio, a space where ideas and practical work combine. Dedicated to both conception and construction, it is place that aims to foster exchanges on particular themes of practice and architectural production. Our team is made up of young architects from around the world, a diversity that we defend and maintain, helping us break through geographic and cultural boundaries, and become effectual in our pro-jects without relying on preconceptions. with problems arising from development such as the overcrowding of cities, the pollution of soil due to agriculture, the depletion of resources and construction materials, have taught us to consider and explore all potentially promising ideas for change. All our current projects and research, regardless of their individual scale, are engaged in these problems we consider essential. It is probably a delusion to imagine that environmentally harmful economic activity will be transformed by consensual mass abstinence. The current green consciousness and environmental guilt have yet to produce significant change in life as usual attitudes. If the answer to destructive consumerism will not be found in moralizing abstinence, maybe it can be teased out in forms of a new green hedonism.

We think the socio-cultural development of the past century has compromised the notion of progress. Over the past fifty years, on a planetary scale, the de-velopment of cities has been based on an increasingly subjective approach, systematically redirecting efforts away from the progressive and morally-oriented pro-grams of the functional city composed of domesti-city, work, leisure, and transportation infrastructure.

We are convinced that everything surrounding us represents but a minute fraction of its potential, including in architectural terms. Our confidence in humanitys infinite promise and our concern with problems arising from development such as the overcrowding of cities, the pollution of soil due to agriculture, the depletion of resources and construc-tion materials, have taught us to consider and explore all potentially promising ideas for change.

Office Building renovation and extensionThe project consists of the renovation of building Bs existing 10,402m surface area, the redesign of the facade taking into account the overall structure, the renovation of the technical premises, and the optimizing of office surface space. The problem of energy will be approached subtly, with the aim of upgrading the efficiency of the facades and facilities to measure, rather that simply applying current regulations brutally. The buildings new skin will be a double ventilated faade of slight thickness. On each floor there will be plant-filled loggias acting as the veritable green lungs of the building. Our proposition highlights generosity of space, light, comfort, and wellbeing. The loggia green spaces planned at the southern structural wall carry important, additional architectural value, without the loss of Useable Surface. They will function like small gardens, naturally ventilated, spaces in which the buildings users can pause, take a breath, take in the view.

Office Building renovationBuilding rehabilitation is a fundamental issue traversing many aspects of our work today. It grants us a means for responding to the depletion of non-renewable natural resources, and prompts a general reimagining of buildings in energy efficient, architectural, technical, economic, and social terms. The buildings initial form, with its floors distributed in two main directions, helped us reinvent it. Without departing significantly from this initial structural logic, we took advantage of it by devising loops in the layout of each level. This organization around a center allowed us to conserve a reduced number of security exits and stairwells, while respecting fire regulations. The cutting out of vertical openings in the middle of each floor allows natural light to reach the heart of the building. The rounded form of the floors transmits softness to the facades as well as to the buildings integral final volume, allowing it to come up to the street at a harmonious and elegant angle.

Training center for EDFLocated in the southwest of Paris, the Saclay Plateau has been the home for decades to a number of French national institutions as well as several private business research centers. As one of the new economic players present at Saclay, EDF envisions the construction of two new establishments: a Center for Research and Development and a Training Center for EDF employees. The program spreads out on an orthogonal grid around the principal agora element, forming a coherent whole, with overlapping average height spaces and large height spaces. The variety of volumes necessitated by the diverse and precise needs of the diverse programmatic elements generates an architectural whole where each function finds its optimal niche. Thanks to their complementary qualities, the different elements come together in architectural symbiosis to form a unique building, structured like a city in which each function finds its ideal place.

Mixed-use building including offices, kindergarten and storesLocated between two district highways, the site benefits from an advantageous position and a visibility without equal. There is a drawback to this location, however: the noise. Taking into account this significant constraint, we decided to design the buildings casing as a double skin. Consequently, what might have remained a common white office building, gains originality from the way in which its facades are considered, constructed through the assembly of two types of prefabricated diamond-shaped panels. The molding effect created by the regularity of the panels, with their slight tilt and inclination, breaks the sight of a stacking of floors, altering and enhancing the urban scale of the building. Taking advantage of the difference in elevation between the two avenues, the ground-floor is split and doubled. Its lower part used as access for the service needs relevant to the functioning of the building; its upper part used as access to the nursery required by the project.

Multi-activity skyscraper including offices, library, swimming poolAt the outset, we imagined the tower from an initial volume, which we considered a spatial texture, consisting of slabs stacked vertically to a height of 200 meters. We call spatial texture the totality of elements that contain the same properties of structure, geometry, and surface area. Within this solid and uniform texture, we applied a dynamic formation process utilizing an empty tube of manifold geometry. In motion, this cavity becomes a generator of space, a dynamic, fluctuating, and evolving construct. The empty tubes path follows that of an imagined human body in slow motion, on a walk. The only constraint being the tube must continually move upward without leaving the textures template. There is no algorithm for how the cavity should advance through the texture, the only rules provided by the simple but consecutive manipulations of: advancement, folding, contraction, expansion, rotation. The cavity can be determined exactly, calculated, proportioned and inhabited variously. Its topology will help us delineate such properties as proximity, contiguity, continuity.

Office buildingThe project consisted of utilizing 190 m for the offices, which were to include a public reception area, archival premises, a cafeteria, as well as premises for the strong-lock. To remain within the same category of materials used by the newly built neighboring cultural complex, but also as a response to cost issues, we proposed utilizing the CIBBAP principle of metal construction, according to which 40 cm wide U shaped sections function equally for the cladding as for the bearing structure. For the treasury offices, we restricted ourselves to the utilization of only this one material so that the structure would retain a strength and clarity in the landscape, despite its small size and isolation. The result is a building of very homogenous appearance that, thanks to its base built set back, seems to float above the field. The only opening visible from the outside is the southern gable, which is entirely made of glass, and functions as the public entrance.

Demolition and reconstruction of two 200-seat university lecture halls

The University of Paris-Descartes wishes to replace its two IUT amphitheaters that stand in the interior courtyard of 143, avenue de Versailles, in the 16th arrondissement. The physical location of the two buildings, constructed in the heart of an urban islet, and resting atop the university parking lots, confronted us with a complex exercise in conceiving and planning our operation. Vertically, a reduction in the height of the amphitheaters would contribute to an improved perception of their whole. Economizing the costs of elevators, rendering the areas compact and dense, without negatively affecting the buildings functioning, moreover brining each buildings functions to a level in correspondence with their usage, are ethical acts of architecture. Aesthetically speaking, the project aims to produce a maximum of effect through providing visual and emotional comfort. Within this particular project, the constructed volume is as important as the residual emptiness that will be generated around it. We designed the most compact of forms possible, covering it with the single material of wood.

4 metro stations in an extension of line 14Our project concerns four new Parisian metro stations that will extend line 14 past its current St. Lazare station terminus, with locations at Pont Cardinet, Porte de Clichy, Clichy St. Ouen, and Mairie de St. Ouen. The program, developed by the RATP, addresses what is at stake for, as well as the ambitions of, a new generation of travellers through urban space. Of particular importance for us in the envisioning of this project is the willingness to engage in coordinated urban development in which the stations contain extensions for buildings, market halls, businesses, etc., all intended to diversify the services available to urban residents on their course through the city. This possibility of a mega-connection will allow individuals to carry out certain of their (shopping, recreational) activities without the necessity of detouring from their daily home to work round-trip route. The space will exude the dynamic, urban, buzzing atmosphere of the 21st century metropolis. Confident in the enormous potential of a new architectural image, we have maintained an open and global approach to the project, free of preconceived notions.

3 metro stations on line BResearch shows that the existence of permanent lines of public transport, namely those of a metro, play an essential role in spurring on harmonious economic development throughout a citys diverse neighborhoods, a process that spreads outwards towards newer suburbs. Our project for the Saint Germain metro station in Rennes attempts to render concrete and visible this new conception of the metros urban significance by concentrating on intelligibility and on the quality of the stations space. We wanted, from the first, to return to the fundamentals of the necessary qualities of a station dedicated to this means of transport: intelligibility, functionality, durability, accessibility, security. In our project, the treatment of the circulation pathways takes on a prominent position: no blind alleys or dead ends, no endless and poorly lit corridors. The pathways will be brightly lit, opening out upon a variety of interior views, allowing a clear path from one level to the next, without impeding on the requirements of workflow management and security.

Car park, urban food production and housingAfter decades of thinking of the city as gridded and mineral-based, dedicated to the car and the service sector, to efficiency and to progress, today urban societies find themselves at the center of an interesting shift: one transforming the values of economy into the values of ecology. Our planning and architectural languages will, from here on, account for these changes. These city garden can function for agricultural production and subsequent transformation into foodstuffs: restaurants, school canteens, bottling, filling or cannery sites...They encourage the promotion of a collective consciousness around notions of cooking and table arts, environmental respect, and the solidarity of nourishment. Crowned with city wind turbines and physically close to end-users, the gardens form a new city landscape in opposition to certain degrading effects of industrialisation and the standardisations of fast-food culture.

Mixed-use building including retirement home, housing units and activity premisesThe urban development zone (ZAC) Claude Bernard is situated in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, on a 3.6ha vast area, between the boulevard Macdonald in the south and the highway in the nord. Block B3 is a mixed-use building, made of three different programs : retail space, a retirement home and private housing units. Our initial goal regarding the quality of life, light and the comfort of the housing units, pushed us to work very precisely on the distribution of the rooms and spaces that are common to both programs : retirement home and housing units. The challenge was to render the housing units efficient and desirable, to produce generous spaces that are perfectly accessible and comfortable. On the south-facing side, the outer walls recede freely to form breaths in the assembled mass, and become a linear set of mezzanines. In the buildings upper part, the movements of the outer walls and paving slabs, combined with a successive shrinkage, signal a change in function.

120 housing units activity premisesThe manufacture of the block 04, made of 60 + 60 housing units, is the result of a joint workshop of the architectural firm Cantin Planchez . This collaboration has allowed us to approach the issue of housing in a free and insightful way. We therefore propose a diversity of volumetric devices, duplexes, lofts, houses, terraces, balconies, loggias, gardens The new entity offers an architectural variety which responds to the urban scale of the site as well as to the domestic character of its program. The site distinguishes itself by the relation to the port and the urban space. This situation generates a public space that adapts to the key urban elements and in the same time interferes with the surrounding landscape. Inspired by the ports surrounding buildings, our project offers collective housing as well as individual house-type units. These qualities, as the modern and reassuring aspect, are obtained due to the rigour of the bay design, the choice of the materials and the use of bright colours.

140 new housing units, cultural facilities, business centerThe SEINE-ARCHE project, extending out from the axis of La Dfense, encompasses an exceptionally vast terrain, in which a train classification yard, railroad site, segment of highway, areas used for unregulated parking, all remain to be urbanized. The block is within Nanterres municipal 9th Terrace, measuring around 113 meters by 21m wide. With the intention of avoiding an effect of mass, the building specifications describe procedures for the cutting and sequencing of volumes. To these various rules of building positioning, we propose a simple response: an organization of three principal volumes stemming from a large common base structure (ground floor + 3). Their dimensions in design allow the development of the maximum quantity of residential housing and activity space, equipped with double orientation. The Nanterre Terrace 9 block makes up a coherent whole, responding to its programmatic needs at each level. The facades present with clarity the projects two primary concepts: the base with its continuous building expresses the urban element, while the two buildings express the more spontaneous element of the landscape.

The basement areas are connected via a logistical gallery.

55-room medical care centerOur project engages in an equilibrium (and disequilibrium) between the full and the empty, in other words between interior and exterior spaces, approaching both as materials. Contrary to programmed spaces, which are associated with specific functions, spacing pervaded by nature acquires a relaxing breath and a little freedom in defining its possible spaces. There are six internal courtyards situated within the four unit complex: two large communal gardens of 350m, with four others interior to each unit, which light the way of the paths toward the rooms. The large open garden, accessible to all, is located in the eastern part of the grounds. The passageway, which creates an efficient distribution of space, expands, transforms, varies. The palette of materials and colors also contains this diversity. Thus the space of the passageway is invigorated, becoming favorable to spontaneous action, to meetings, to sensory requests.

67-bed retirement homeThis retirement home is located on the heights of Riedisheim (a suburb of Mulhouse), in a residential neighborhood. The conjunction of geophysical and regulatory constraints rendered this plot of land difficult to build upon. These conditions led us to develop the entire project within a construction adopted to the form and constraints of the land. The building unfolds in length from east to west, while its height, made of up of four trays slightly shifting away from one another, follows the natural slope. The roofs, visible from the principal access road located at the top of the plot, are all planted, which helped dampen the impact of construction in the neighborhood. We divided the length of the building into little modules the size of several rooms, in order to better integrate the length within the residential environment. These interruptions bring about the entry of a generous amount of natural light into the interior circulatory paths of all floors. The building complex is covered in wood, whose reassuring touch is present at the center of the lives of residents.

Mother & baby care center, psychiatric hospital and day careThe project included the completion, within the UMB, of a Day Hospital, a Full Time department, communal areas and consultation offices, with each of these sections requiring their own entrance. In the image of the establishments existing pavilions, in the south of the grounds, the UMB was completed in the shape of an open U, enclosing a garden. The ambience, in the image of traditional Japanese pavilions, centers around a piece of nature, thereby creating a contemplative setting. The continuous, covered walkway linking the three entities, providing a smooth transition between interior and exterior, is an element that reflects this specific spatial relationship. The garden extends to the interior via two courtyards that stand next to the main entrances. Thus, the first sight upon arriving at one of the entrance halls is a view through to the garden.

84-bed retirement home with two psycho-geriatric unitsThe Monconseil retirement home is one of the first buildings to be erected in ZAC Monconseil, the new ecological district under construction just north of Tours. The urban regulations endorsed a construction orientated towards the city, on several floors and perfectly aligned to the road. Once confronted with this typology, we had to find ways of reducing the length of the building. As we were unable to divide it into separate parts, we did so interiorly, by separating the corridors. These corridors became significant living spaces for the elderly who go out rarely, a kind of extension to their bedrooms. There was a nice opportunity to work the concrete. Instead of using paint, we opted for a tapestry pattern on the concrete through sandblasting.

Sports and fencing hallOur pragmatic approach to the program is kept as compact as possible. The buildings shape and aspect will be totally integrated into this future dense urban zone in which it is located. Our project responds to a double challenge: that of providing an ambitious contemporary expression and that of maintaining a respectful dialogue with the environment. Inside the gymnasium, the chosen materials follow a strongly recommended plan for public facilities in how to address wear and tear: the partition walls of the locker-rooms will be constructed in brick over which a washable paint finish resistant to shocks will be placed, the floors will be tiled. In the entrance hall, the ground will be coated with a high resistance resin, while prefabricated wood paneling insures fine acoustics throughout the buildings entirety. The lighting will be recessed, protected by shock resistant grills. In its clear, intelligible, and fluid spatial organization, we attempted to render this building an effective tool at the service of the community.

Sports hall, hall for gymnastics, wrestling hall, 600-seats auditorium

The project called for the construction of a 600-space village hall, sporting grounds of national dimension with bleachers for 250 people, a 400m gymnasium and a 150m wrestling hall. We decided to divide the project into a series of volumes, positioning them alongside the EDF road, where they would find a harmony in the already existent template of industrial buildings. This linear organization runs alongside a ramp in which all the secondary locations that were not built within the projects specific volumes are housed: locker rooms, technical premises, and related areas. With regards to the flow of internal traffic that it facilitates, the ramp acts as the glue between the separate volumes and their various functions, thus providing clear navigation through rather complex construction needs. The Village Neuf sports and cultural complex is our first large, completed project. With construction lasting twenty-four months, this project challenged us with erecting buildings of large dimension, halfway within an urban setting.

32.000 seat stadium, offices, spaThe arena stadium is distinguished by a structural conception of intriguing simplicity in which an extreme lightness evokes the natural world. The architectural objectives we had in mind for this operation included unity in the architectural covering, compositional clarity, transparency and lightness of the whole. In our project the architectural intention is intimately tied to the choice of materials and their implementation: reconstituted solid wood for the large girders and for the covering, metal for the assemblages and for the largest girder, concrete for the base and for the points where the vertical pressures converge. Despite giving off the appearance of a completely wooden building, the stadium in reality possesses a heterogeneous structure underneath, composed equally of steel and concrete. Two metal-beam trusses extend across the 100m length of the plot, traversing and bracing the edifice, and giving an overall finesse to the wooden structure.

Cultural center, orthodox church and public space Quai BranlyIt is difficult to speak of the physical establishment of a place of worship on its site without speaking of its orientation. In effect, it is a very important consideration in so far as such a buildings cardinal points are always highly charged with symbols. In all religious buildings there is a relationship with the sun. Thus, we can say that the majority of religious buildings, whether Christian or Pagan, give reference to the east-west axis. This does not necessarily mean that they are exactly oriented along this axis and direction, but that they at least reference it someway in their construction. Inside this building, there is the perfection of the circle and, at the same time, a particular orientation highlighted by the architecture, made up of a concentration of the preferred spirit of the chapel during the day, of the variations of light that pass through the canopy, of the beauty of the colors present. Red, blue, gold make up the materials of the base. These serve essentially as representing a link between the heavens and earth....

Extension of a museumFacing the Manor, that solitary and compact object with its beautiful architectural gesture, its dominant position, we do not hesitate in proposing an easily accessible architecture, close to the ground, opening onto the surrounding nature, sensitive to natures beauty and fragility. Our first idea was to house the museum in a large linear structure that would traverse the landscape. A structure of this sort is reminiscent of bridges and pathways, amusement parks, works of art, rather than of a traditional building. This linear space highlights the surrounding works that together bring about a unique experience in the visitor: in the buildings interior a playground for the mind, in the enveloping outside a playground for the body. Our museum is a cultural space that invites visitors to discover works of art while discovering themselves, along walks through fluid and fluctuating spaces, well-proportioned and agreeably lit.
