Examples of this commitmentin practice include controlling emissions (ofsludge, odours, etc.) using biological ratherthan chemical technologies, raising publicawareness of eco-citizenship, and makingcareful use of water resources (recycling pu-rified wastewater, detecting leaks, etc.).In France, we act as a water supply and was-tewater services outsourcing operator forlocal authorities and industrial companies.

RECOVERING MATERIALS TO CONSERVENATURAL RESOURCESThe ever-increasing scarcity and cost of raw materials, changesto regulations on materials recovery and increasing eco-awarenessare changing the waste sorting and processing needs of localauthorities. The extension of sorting instructions and theintroduction of new intercommunity cooperation maps in Franceare also driving demand for sorting centres capable of sorting morewaste more accurately. Coved offers innovative solutions to theseeconomic and social challenges. In its Aspach-le-Haut, Ormoy andIllats sorting centres, Coved has introduced new-generation opticalsorters to sort more types of plastics, paper and cardboard moreaccurately. As part of reducing costs for local authorities, Covedaims to achieve optimum recovery rates and continues to developits Operator Guaranteed Recovery (Valorisation Garantie desOpérateurs or VGO) scheme to sell recoverable raw materialsat the best-possible price.

EMERGING POLLUTANTS:FINDING SOLUTIONS TOELIMINATE THEMFor more than 15 years, Saur has focused dedicatedresearch resources on evaluating the risks posedby micropollutants and developing solutionsthat guarantee the safety of drinking water. The CarboPlus® process that eliminatesmicropollutants such as pesticides, hormones anddrug residues is central to these solutions. The principle behind its effective action is simple:it uses absorption to trap micropollutants on fluidisedactivated carbon, which is then eliminated. This is a major advantage over alternative processesthat work simply by breaking down molecules (usingozonation) or concentrating them (using reverseosmosis).

EngineeringThe Saur Group engineering andconstruction specialist Stereau com-bines technological expertise with theability to manage drinking water pro-duction and wastewater treatmentplant projects on behalf of industrialcompanies and local authorities. Formore than 50 years, we have develo-ped an approach to engineering thatdirectly addresses the concerns andissues faced by our customers andthe areas they serve, at the same timeas reconciling the interests of all sta-keholders in maximising project envi-ronmental performance.

REUT: A GREEN IDEA FORGREENS

(For nearly 10 years, the Rhuys-Kerver golfcourse in France has used hygienically-treated wastewater from the neighbouring(14,500 PE) Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuyswastewater treatment plant. Depending on rainfall volumes, 65,000 m3of water are required for between 5 and 6months of the year to water the tees, fairways and greens of this 60-hectarecourse. Located on the Rhuys peninsula, the Rhuys-Kerver golf course stretches for 6km along a Natura 2000-listed coastline.Five other courses managed by Blue Greenalso use the REUT (Reuse of Treated andPurified Water) technique: Baden, Pornic,Port-Bourgenay, Mazières-en-Gâtine andSainte Maxime.

International

The work we do internationally focuses onmaximising water supply and wastewater ser-vice performance in countries such asArmenia (850,000 residents) and SaudiArabia in the cities of Mecca and Taïf (2.2 mil-lion residents combined) and Jubail (250,000residents). We also serve major cities, inclu-ding Gdansk and Sopot in Poland (500,000residents) and Las Palmas in the CanaryIslands, Spain (450,000 residents), as well aslarge-scale facilities, such as the Dalmuir was-tewater treatment plant in Glasgow, Scotland(600,000 PE). The way we operate in thesemarkets reflects the diversity of our contracts,

which range from full outsourcing of publicservices to the provision of support services, expertise, auditing and skills transfer.Management contracts, concessions, leasecontracts, technical support contracts andBOT contracts… the Saur Group and its subsi-diary companies operate internationally un-der all these arrangements. We work closely with our partners to build thetechnical and financial packages best suitedto their needs. A good example of this in prac-tice is the recent public-private partnership inKonstancin-Jeziorna near the Polish capital ofWarsaw, where we are supplying wastewatertreatment services. These involve long-term solutions that recon-cile quality with environmentally respectfulprocesses to guarantee residents high-qua-lity treatment of wastewater over a 30-yearperiod, so that discharges to the natural envi-ronment meet exacting standards of hygiene. The total integration of Saur teams and theirconsistent application of best practices to allour projects are what sets us apart from ourcompetitors.

MECCA: SAUR SERVE4 MILLION PILGRIMSUnder the terms of its water supply andwastewater treatment contracts with thecities of Mecca and Taïf in Saudi Arabia, Saurprovides Mecca with drinking water suppliesthroughout the Hajj pilgrimage period.Several months of preparation are needed toplan the key processes required to ensurecompletely safe supplies for the city, whosenormal population of 1.6 million swellsduring the Hajj by more than 4 millionpilgrims. Intensified monitoring ofpipeline systems, the installation ofmobile analytical laboratories and air-conditioning systems at sites of pilgrimage, management of non-standard facilities(including 23 reservoirs with a total capacityof 2 million m³), inspection of fireextinguishing systems and a call centrededicated to pilgrims have all contributed tothe faultless service delivered every yearsince 2011, for which the Group has beencongratulated by the National WaterCompany (NWC).

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

For reasserted social responsibility Our researchers are developing innovative

processes that constantly reduce the produc-tion and volume of waste and the amount ofenergy consumed; processes such asCompact-RM® (ultra-fine membrane filtrationof wastewater), Rhizostep® (reed bed treat-ment of wastewater), Hélioplus® (the sludgedrying technology that uses 100% renewableenergy) and Chrysalide® (the waste treatmentbioreactor that generates zero CO² emis-sions). Our 30 patents, 66 registered trade-marks, and ongoing studies in a dozenlocations around the world are developed atGroup level before being made available to allour local authority partners.

Adapting to specificregionalneeds10,000 communities in France put their trustin us as a result of our historic rural and coas-tal roots, which have now grown to includemid-size towns and cities and major urbancommunities. This means that our peopleneed to have detailed knowledge of the spe-cific requirements set out in all our water, waste management and other contracts, andto exercise well-developed listening skills.
