  • POLICIES AND EXPECTATIONS

     ATTENDANCE

     NHS 24 Hour Attendance Line: (949) 936-7201

For information in Mandarin, please click here (中文翻譯請點擊這裡)

Every absence from school must be cleared within THREE days of the absence. Absences must be cleared in one of the following ways:

    1. Call (949) 936-7201 (NHS 24 Hour Attendance Line) each day your child is absent.

    2. Bring a written note from his/her parent/guardian to the Attendance Office upon returning to school. The note needs to include the following information:

    ● Student's full name (ID number if possible) ● Date of absence ● Reason for absence ● Full signature of parent/guardian with a daytime phone number

Please note: NHS Does not accept e-mail verifications of absences

If it is necessary for the student to be out of school for reasons other than illness, we encourage the student to come to school for at least part of the day. When the student attends part of the day, he or she may be able to touch base with teachers and obtain important assignments. REMINDER: each class period is approximately 85 minutes in length, daily attendance is important.

Students who are having technical difficulties should email the teacher directly and/or contact the office to let them know and seek assistance.

Regular attendance at school is the most important component of student success. Students who miss more than five days of school will be referred to their assigned assistant principal who will work with the family to support regular attendance at school. The student may be subject to referral to the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) process.

    Justifiable Personal Reason Absence

Students who are being excused from school for a justifiable personal reason such as a religious or cultural observance must submit a written note, signed by the assistant principal, in order to qualify for a verified absence. Phone calls will result in unverified absences. Justifiable personal reason absence forms are available in the attendance office or are linked to the right.

  • Early Dismissal

If a student has an appointment which requires that he/she leave school early, a note must be brought to the attendance office signed by the parent or legal guardian stating the dismissal time, date, and reason for absence. This note must be brought to the attendance office before school so that an early release form can be issued. The Early Release Form must be presented to the teacher before the student is excused from class at the appropriate time. The student will then come to the attendance office to sign out before leaving campus. If the student is returning they will be expected to sign in at the attendance office upon their return. Students who do not sign out with the Attendance or Health Office will be considered truant.

    Arriving Late (Tardies)

    1. Students who are TARDY (unexcused) during the first 15 minutes of class should report directly to the classroom. If paper attendance is being taken (Ex: if there is a substitute) and the sheet has already been sent down to the office, students should go to attendance to make sure their marked absence is changed to a tardy, then return to class.

    2. Students who are LATE (excused) should always check in first with the Attendance Office. Excused tardies include illness, medical appointments, funerals, court dates, and religious holidays.

    3. All students who are more than 15 minutes tardy/late must sign in at the Attendance Office and obtain an Admittance Form to class.

ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY  Northwood High School students demonstrate honesty, integrity, and the ability to produce their own work. Sharing work with other students for submission can be considered a violation of the academic honesty policy. The faculty encourages and expects students to submit original work that reflects their individual effort and ability. Behavior that can be defined as a violation of the academic honesty policy represents a violation of mutual trust and respect. Northwood High School faculty will confront students suspected of violation of the academic honesty policy.   Examples of violating the academic honesty policy include but are not limited to:

    1. Cheating on Tests - Any use of external assistance relating to an examination, test, or quiz without expressed permission of the teacher. This includes looking at another student's paper, sharing answers, possession of materials, or copying another student's paper.

    2. Fabrication - Any intentional falsification or invention of data, citation, or other authority in an academic exercise.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE PACK

  • 3. Unauthorized Collaboration - Collaboration on an assignment between a student and

another person, if such collaboration is not expressly directed or permitted by the teacher. This includes copying another student's work, allowing work to be copied or completing assignments for others, giving or "passing" any assessments to other students for the following year, or receiving any assessments from other students.

    4. Plagiarism - Any representation of another's ideas, words, or work as one's own. Plagiarism includes the misuse of published material, electronic material, and/or the work of other students. The original writer who intentionally shares his/her paper for another to copy, without the permission of the teacher, has also engaged in plagiarism.

    5. Alteration of Materials - Any intentional and unauthorized alteration of student, teacher, or library instructional or assessment materials. This may include changing answers after the fact.

    6. Theft - Any unauthorized taking, concealment, or alteration of student or teacher instructional or assessment materials or equipment, including, but not limited to, the district data network, internet, and other on-line resources.

    7. Transfer or Use of Unauthorized Materials - includes the use of unapproved translation devices, or any giving or selling of unauthorized materials.

    8. Digital Citizenship Violations - Per Board Policy: 6163.4 Technology Resources Acceptable Use Policy, students should refrain from using technological resources for violations that involve academic dishonesty. These include using technology to copy, plagiarize, collaborate inappropriately, sending or receiving test questions, accessing another’s account, or hacking into computer systems.

NHS follows the academic honesty policy outlined by IUSD. The full academic honesty policy, including consequences, can be seen here.

***Note: If a student engages in egregious Academic Honesty Violations, other consequences will be considered by the Northwood High School Administration.***

      PARKING LOT DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP

Parents entering the school in the right hand lane will turn right on the road and drop off students on the curb.

Parents entering the school in the left hand lane will turn left and drop students in front of the 1000 building.

    Things to Remember

    1. Common Courtesy is key. 2. Have your child ready for a quick exit. 3. Pull as far forward as possible...there are people waiting behind you. 4. Drop-off early...there are fewer cars and traffic.

    When You Log In

    1) You are required to use your real name, a computer and IUSD account when you log in  a) Students who do not use their given name will not be admitted from the waiting

room b) Patiently wait until admitted by the teacher c) If disconnected, email your teacher ASAP to get back into the zoom meeting d) Every student should have access to a computer. If you do not, please contact

the administration. Cell phone usage is only a last resort. 2) Have your microphone muted upon login

    a) Only turn your microphone on when you have been asked to speak 3) Have your camera on when you log in so teachers can engage with you visually and

see your face a) Sessions may be recorded. NOTE - this also means that everyone's behavior is

being monitored. Students disrupting the class will have consequences.

    In Large Group Sessions

    1) Stay on task, have your notebook (possibly text) and writing utensils ready for use just as you would if instruction were happening in person

    a) To avoid Zoom fatigue, it may be beneficial for you to write notes by hand 2) Keep your microphone muted unless you have been asked by your teacher to speak 3) Keep your camera on for eye contact between teacher and peers. This allows for the

    a) The emote features are found at the bottom of the zoom window under “reactions”.

    5) If possible, use the “raise hand” feature or "parking lot" if you have a question 6) Chat feature will be utilized at teacher discretion. Do not make a comment in chat that

you would not make out loud in a classroom setting. Remember, no one is good at multitasking so limit the amount of chatting that you do.

    7) Participation of all students is expected

    In Breakout Sessions

FOR THE GOOD OF THE PACK

  • 1) During the breakout session your conversation should remain on topic/ task and
