OURSON

 THE LARK AND THE TOAD

THERE was once a pretty woman named Agnella, who cult!ated a "arm# She

l!ed alone wth a young ser!ant named $asserose# The "arm was small %ut

%eaut"ul and n &ne order# She had a most charmng cow, whch ga!e a

'uantty o" ml(, a cat to destroy the mce and an ass to carry her "rut,

%utter, !egeta%les, eggs, and cheese to mar(ets e!ery )ednesday#

No one (new up to that tme how Agnella and $asserose had arr!ed at ths

un(nown "arm whch rece!ed n the county the name o" the )oodland *arm#

One e!enng $asserose was %usy ml(ng the pretty whte cow whle Agnella

prepared the supper# At the moment she was placng some good soup and a

plate o" cream upon the ta%le, she saw an enormous toad de!ourng wth

a!dty some cherres whch had %een put on the ground n a !ne+lea"#

Ugly toad- e.clamed Agnella, / wll teach you how to eat my cherres- At

the same moment she l"ted the lea!es whch contaned the cherres, and

ga!e the toad a (c( whch dashed t o0 a%out ten steps# She was a%out to

throw t "rom the door, when the toad uttered a sharp whstle and rased tsel"

upon ts hnd legs1 ts great eyes were 2ashng, and ts enormous mouth

openng and shuttng wth rage, ts whole ugly %ody was trem%lng and "rom

ts 'u!erng throat was heard a terr%le %ellowng#

Agnella paused n ama3ement1 she recoled, ndeed, to a!od the !enom o"

the monstrous and enraged toad# She loo(ed around "or a %room to e4ect ths

hdeous monster, when the toad ad!anced towards her, made wth ts "ore

paws a gesture o" authorty, and sad n a !oce trem%lng wth rage56

7ou ha!e dared to touch me wth your "oot- 7ou ha!e pre!ented me "rom

Stop, sster, nterrupted a small !oce, sweet and 2ute+l(e, whch seemed
