Potential Reasons for Misdiagnosis of

Acute Otitis Media

• Reliance on inaccurate history

• Failure to remove cerumen

• Screaming (crying) can make tympanic membranes

red• Poor light from otoscope (bulb and/or battery)

• Failure to evaluate tympanic membrane mobility and

position (pneumatic otoscopy)

• Inappropriately sized speculum
