My dear wife

We arrived at our destination and I spent the night in a church. I slept for (only) five hours but in the morning we ate some bread and drank some black coffee. It was awful! I thought of you and the children and breakfast in our little kitchen!

Fortunately, I have met some brave men. This war will be long and difficult but we will win! We will save France! We will fight the Germans! We have to fight!

One man who is called Pierre lives in Calais. He is quite tall and has blue eyes and short straight hair which reveals his big ears! He has two children like us who are called Catherine, Alain and Renée. Catherine is 10, Alain is 8 however Renee the youngest is 6. Pierre seems to be really confident but last night I saw that in reality he is quite frightened. But it’s normal.

I think a lot about you and the children. Don’t despair Suzanne. I know that one day we will liberate France and I will return home.

Ma chère femme

Nous sommes arrivés à notre destination et j’ai passé la nuit dans une église. J’ai dormi pendant seulement cinq heures mais le matin, nous avons mangé du pain et avons bu du café noir. C’était affreux! J’ai pensé à toi et les enfants et le petit déjeuner dans notre petite cuisine.

Heureusement, j’ai rencontré des hommes courageux. Je sais que cette guerre va être longue et difficile mais nous gagnerons! Nous sauverons la France! Nous combattrons les Allemands! Nous devons nous battre!

Un homme qui s’appelle Pierre habite à Calais. Physiquement, il est assez grand et a les yeux bleus et les cheveux courts et raides qui révèlent ses grandes oreilles! Il a deux enfants comme nous qui s’appellent Catherine, Alain et Renée. Catherine a dix ans, Alain a huit ans cependant Renée la cadette a six ans. Pierre a l’air d’être vraiment assuré mais hier soir j’ai vu qu’en réalité il est assez effrayé. Mais c’est normal.

Je pense beaucoup à toi et les enfants. Ne te décourage pas Suzanne. Je sais qu’un jour nous libérerons la France et je retournerai à la maison.
