Welcome200 million years ago, New Caledonia was part of Gondwana. A section
of this continent broke away to form new land masses including
Australia and the privileged Melanesian land: New Caledonia.
Located to the west of the Pacific, in the midst of a maritime zone
extending over almost 1,450,000 km², the island group of New Caledonia
has a total surface area of 18,575 km² and comprises the Mainland,
Loyalty Islands (Lifou, Maré, Ouvéa and Tiga), Isle of Pines, Belep Islands
and other distant islets.
Surrounded by a coral reef, New Caledonia bathes in the largest lagoon
in the world, listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2008.
The Mainland, stretching over 16,750 km², forms an expanse of
undulating land 400km long and 50km wide, divided by a mountain chain
reaching its peak in the North with Mt Panié, 1629 metres in height.
The Loyalty Islands are coral atolls. Their coastlines notched by long
and deep bays, blend gracefully with the white sand beaches, the jagged
cliffs in the former reef and the magically coloured coral depths.
Isle of Pines, also known as “Kunié” by the inhabitants, is bordered by
heavenly bays and turquoise lagoons. The island extends 18km long and
14km wide culminating at the Pic N’Ga summit, 260 metres in height.
Lulled by a subtropical climate, New Caledonia has two seasons; a warm
and humid season from November to March and a cooler season from
June to September. Rainfall, which is generally sporadic, is concentrated
over two humid seasons: from December to April and again in June.
The average temperature ranges from 30°C in the hot season to 18° in
the cooler season with annual thermal ranges not exceeding 7°.
In this healthy climate, biodiversity flourishes, protected by the
remoteness of the island and nurtured by its specific geological origin.
A hugely diversified flora and fauna with an astonishing number of
endemic species has developed without restriction.
Four main ecosystems can be discovered when travelling along the
roads of the “Caillou”, known locally as “the rock”: mangrove, savannah,
scrubland and forest.
