Academic tribes and territories : intellectual enquiry and the culture of disciplines / Tony Becher and Paul R. Trowler

2nd ed. - Buckingham : Open university press, 2001. - 1 vol. (xv-238 p.) ; 23 cm. - Bibliogr. p. [213]-235. Index.ISBN 0-335-20627-1

How do academics perceive themselves and colleagues in their own disciplines, and how do they rate those in other subjects? How closely related are their intellectual tasks and their ways of organizing their professional lives? What are the interconnections between academic cultures and the nature of disciplines? Academic Tribes and Territories maps academic knowledge and explores the diverse characteristics of those who inhabit and cultivate it. This second edition provides a thorough update to Tony Becher's classic text, first published in 1989, and incorporates research findings and new theoretical perspectives. Fundamental changes in the nature of higher education and in the academic's role are reviewed and their significance for academic cultures is assessed. This edition moves beyond the first edition's focus on elite universities and the research role to examine academic cultures in lower status institutions internationally and to place a new emphasis on issues of gender and ethnicity. This second edition successfully renews a classic in the field of higher education. [Source : d'après la 4e de couverture]

Pleasure with products : beyond usability / William S. Green et Patrick W. Jordan

London ; New York : Taylor & Francis, cop. 2002. - 1 vol. (vii-390 p.) : ill. ; 25 cm. - Ref. bibliogr. en fin de chapitre. Index.ISBN 0-415-23704-1 (Rel.)

During the past five years or so, there as been a significant paradigm shift in the role of hhuman in product design. Previously; good design focused almost exclusively on the user's physical and cognitive processing capabilities and on product usability ; but increased recognition is now being given to "pleasure-based" human factors and the wider lifestyle issues of the user. Looking at hopes, dreams, values and aspirations emphases the holistic nature at the person-product intercation. Usability may once have been seen as an added bonus, but consumers now tend to be disappointed if they have any difficulties in using a product, their contribution must extend beyond these usability issues to capture the product's sensorial and aesthetic qualities : whatever makes it real joy to use. This involves recognition of the traditional designer's skills and a qillingness to deal with qualitative issues and judgements in the generation and assessment of the entire user-product interface. This book gives an overview of the state-of-the-art in new human factors approaches and consists of specially invited contributions from leading practitioners in both industry and academia. These outline the latest developments and techniques in industrial applications and research in this rapidly processing field. It will prove essential reading for all human factors specialists involved in design ; and for designers who care about the usability of their products. [Source : d'après la 4e de couverture]
