    Prsentation

    Les pages qui suivent consistent en une compilation de notes de lecture en anthropologie visuelle. Loin d'offrirun panorama complet de cet aspect de notre discipline, ce travail se concentre d'abord et avant tout sur ladmarche participative dans la mthode de travail de terrain menant la ralisation doeuvres de cinma

    anthropologique*.

    Certains thmes paraitront rcurrents, notamment l'anthropologie partage telle que pratique par Jean Rouch.Les concepts de cinma vrit et dethno-fiction, au coeur de la dmarche de Rouch, ctoient les ides etmthodes entourant la place de la subjectivit et de la rflexivit dans les productions audiovisuelles desanthropologues.

    En commenant les lectures qui ont men ce recueil de citations, je recherchais dabord des outilsmthodologiques et conceptuels pour maider raliser un terrain au Tchad et produire des documents vidospertinents. Lapproche participative mintressait et javais t mis en contact avec certains films de Rouch,

    sans toutefois en saisir toute loriginalit.

    Ce sont les lectures et les rfrences intertextuelles qui mont guid dans cette exploration, rendant parfoisncessaire le visionnement de films classiques pour mieux mettre en perspective les rfrences. Plusieursautres livres et articles que ceux cits plus loin ont t lus sans toutefois tre mis contribution dans la prise denotes systmatique qui a conclu cette dmarche.

    Ce recueil est surtout construit pour mon usage personnel, comme outil de travail dans la ralisation dedocuments vidos et comme complment thorique monProjet de formation pratique. Mais fidle lidede partage qui transparait dans les citations, jespre quil saura intresser et mme aider dautresanthropologues ou tudiants en anthropologie atteints de cette belle folie qui nous pousse partir sur le terrainencombr de matriel lectronique coteux, fragile et conu pour fonctionner dans des relations sens unique,observateur et observ.

    Ici, la forme importe peu et les ides importent beaucoup. Il y a eu dcoupage, bien entendu: la vision delanthropologie visuelle qui mane de ce montage nest pas ncessairement celle des auteurs. Il sagit dunpoint de vue, le mien, construit partir de la slection instinctive de plusieurs ralits, ides et points de vue,dont lessentiel a t laiss hors-champ. Aucune de ces citations ne devrait tre recopie intgralement sansavoir au pralable lu son contexte et visionn les films mentionns. Attention, linspiration vient avec lusage..

    Rouch: "the camera is not confined to the role of a passive recording instrument" but "rather an active agent ofinvestigation and the camera user can become an interrogator of the world"(Loizos, 1993:46) in El Guindi (2004)

    According to Rouch, feedbackis "an extraordinary technique.. [an] audiovisual counter-gift... [that] has certainlynot yet revealed all of its possibilities" To Rouch, the prime audience is the person being filmed. He always felt itwas necessary to show "the first rushes from beginning to end to the people who were filmed whose participationis essential" "a participant camera will pass into the hands of those who were, up to now, always in front of it.Then the anthropologist will no longer monopolize the observation of things. Instead, both he and his culture willbe observed and recorded. In this way ethnographic film will help us share anthropology"(Rouch, 1995a:98) in El Guindi (2004)

    Rouch: "The idea of my film is to transform anthropology, the elder daughter of colonialism, a discipline reservedto those with power interrogating people without it. I want to replace it with a shared anthropology. That is to say,an anthropological dialoguebetween people belonging to different cultures, which to me is the discipline of

    human sciences for the future."(Rouch in Le Monde) in Ruby (2000)

    "During the winter, we compiled a series of motion pictures showing the primitive life, crafts, and modes ofhunting and travelling of the islanders -- an improved version of the film we had previously made on the BaffinIsland expedition. With a portable projectorbought for the purpose, we showed the islanders a copy of the BaffinIsland film, purposing in this way to inspire them with that spirit of emulation so necessary to the succes of ourfilming. Nor were we disapointed. Enthusastic audiences crowded the hut. Their Ayee's and Ah's at the ways ofthese their kindred that were strange to them such as none of the strange and wonderful ways of the kablunak(white men) called forth.     "Cinma-vrit is a new sort of art, the art of life itself. The 'cine-eye' includes: all techniques of filming; allmoving pictures; all methods, without exception, which permit one to reach out and record reality; a camera inmotion."(Vertov, 1963 [1923]: 34)

    "The second approach in anthropological filmmaking admits right from the beginning that there is no such thing

    as the objectivity of the camera. A film is always a construction. Anthropological films are no exception, they aresimilar to monographs which are selective syntheses of cultural data. The creative, constructive contribution ofthe filmmaker cannot be ignored. This approach gives much freedom to the filmmaker in all phases of production;the anthropological film become and admittedly personal interpretation of the local culture. With this in mind,Flaherty developed a specific method for constructing (and reconstructing) cultures on film."(Balikci, 1975: 194) in (Hockings, 1975)

    montre des rituels, des 'interactions sociales', des chasses et des procds technologiques comme si rienn'avait chang. Cela tient deux sries de raisons: d'abord parce que l'anthropologie, fille de l'imprialisme, n'ajamais reconnu sa mre et tente dsesprment de garder son objet de recherche [...], ensuite parce que lesfilms de 'vrais bons sauvages' constituent une marchandise de choix, exotique, vendable et rentable. Tout lemonde aime voir un bon rituel, bien color, rythm, enlevant, et personne ne veut voir agoniser un enfant qui abu de la poudre de lait Nestl dilue dans une eau insalubre, surtout si on dpasse le simple aspect dramatiquepour expliquer que c'est le rsultat concret, palpable et inluctable de la prsence imprialiste dans les pays de

    "[De l'enregistrement synchrone de l'image et du son] rsulte galement un dvoilement, assum comme tel, del'axe d'observation qui relie le cinaste aux personnes filmes. Car tt ou tard celles-ci s'adressent au cinaste,le regardent, le questionnent, lui rpondent; et l'enregistrement continu conserve la trace de de dialogue gestuelet verbal. Le cinaste, loin de demeurer extrieur au procs observ, en simple contemplateur, devient lui-mme

    Contrairement aux apparences, cette attitude n'est pas incompatible avec la tendance au non-directivisme; elleen est mme le prolongement naturel. Tandis que lespersonnes filmes participent de plus en plus activement au procs d'observation, le cinaste, de son ct,s'engage de plus en plus profondment dans le procs observ. Ainsi se trouve gnralis et pouss jusqu'ses extrmes consquences le geste audacieux de Flaherty consistant raliser un film dont Nanook et lui-mmesoient galement auteurs, grce leur commun examen critique des images enregistres."(De France, 1982:349-350)

    "The Ax Fight, de Timothy Asch (1975), illustre bien l'une des toutes premires tentatives de prsentationpolytechnique. [...] Cette exprience de Timothy Asch ne constitue qu'une forme de transition entre l'expositionclassique et la no-exposition. [...] Malgr cela, un pas dcisif est franchi pour deux raisons essentielles. Lapremire tient au rle jou par l'examen du premier document filmique, dont l'enregistrement est continu, dansl'laboration de l'oeuvre finale.     The Camera and ManRouch, Jean (1975), "The Camera and Man" inPrinciples of Visual Anthropology (directed by PaulHockings), Mouton & Co, Netherlands, 521p.

    For Robert Flaherty, around 1920, filming the life of the Eskimo of Canada meant filming one particular Eskimo,not an object, but a person. His basic honesty required that he show the subject what he was doing. WhenFlaherty set up a developing room in a cabin on Hudson Bay and projected his brand new pictures on a screenfor his first spectator, the Eskimo Nanook, he did not know that with absurdly inadequate means, he had justinvented both 'participant observation' which would be used some thirty years later by sociologists andanthropologists, and 'feedback' with which we are still so clumsily experimenting."(Rouch, 1975:86)

    "The camera became what Luc de Heusch has appropriately called 'the participant camera'. And, without adoubt, when Flaherty was developping his rushes inside his igloo, he must have realized that he was soundingthe death knell for over 90 percent of the filmed documentaries which would be produced later on.     "Personally -- unless forced into a special situation -- I am violently opposed to film crews. My reasons areseveral. The sound engineer must fully understand the language of the people he is recording. It is thusindispensable that he belong to the ethnic group being filmed and that he also be trained in the minutiae of hisjob. Besides, with the present techniques used in direct cinema (synchronic sound), the filmmaker must be thecameraman. And the ethnologist alone, in my mind, is the one who knows when, where and how to film, i.e. to dothe production. Rouch shot the film withoutsound: there were no synchronous sound cameras in 1954-55. How could the commentarybe consistent withthe playful, joyful ethos of the images ? Rouch pondered this problem for some time. In 1957 a colleague fromthe Film Unit of Ghana invited him to use a sound studio in Accra. Rouch asked Damor and Lam to Watch the
