WRITING

The Story Writer’s Workshop Designed for beginning and intermediate writers, this course uncovers the mysteries of creating fiction. Through a combination of lectures, in-class exercises, workshops, discussions, and homework, you examine the core elements authors use to craft their stories: plot, characterization, dialogue, points of view, theme, and structure. You also learn an effective revision process as well as look at finding the right market for your work.

8 Thu Sep 15 - Nov 3 6:30 - 9 pm J. Mavin 93027 $425

Story Structure: How to Build a StoryGood stories don’t just happen, they’re built. Like a blueprint, you need a sound structure to build an effective emotional journey for your readers. Through a combination of lecture, in-class exercises, homework, workshop and discussion, we’ll explore both common and unconventional story shapes used in fiction. We’ll also look at genre con-ventions, three-act structure, and the hero’s journey to develop the tools you’ll need to build emotionally satisfying stories again and again.

6 Sat Sep 24 - Nov 5* 9:30 am - 12 pm J. Mavin 93026 $369 *No class Oct 8

Extraordinary People: The Craft of Character CreationMost readers look for stories about inter-esting people doing fascinating things in the most surprising of ways they’ll always remember (as opposed to stories about ordinary people doing ordinary things in the most ordinary ways they’ll soon forget). Designed for writers of any skill level, this course shows you how to populate your fic-tion with compelling and memorable people, both heroic and villainous (and everything in between). Through a combination of lectures, in-class exercises, discussion and homework, you’ll learn to create believable characters your readers will care about by not only exploring the best ways to drama-tize how they look, feel, think, and talk, but also by what they believe, want, and do.

6 Tue Nov 1 - Dec 6 6:30 - 9 pm J. Mavin 93012 $369

Writing Brilliant, Engaging and BELIEVABLE Dialogue NEW! You could have a great plot, but if the people in your story sound like robots reading from your outline the audience can’t connect. Dialogue is a delicate art within the craft, and involves a keen ear, a sense of rhythm, a grasp of story-logic and an understanding of subtext. By studying examples from vari-ous works and practising in-class and doing assignments at home, you will first gain an understanding of what effective dialogue is, and then learn to create it. By the end of the course, you will know how to write dialogue “from the inside out”; distinguish between “real” and “interesting” dialogue; engage in eavesdropping to “hone the ear”; practise writing like an actor (using objectives and tactics); understand the difference between “story logic” and “character logic”; and use value shifts to heighten intensity. You are encouraged to bring a desire to learn and experiment. This course is relevant for new as well as experienced writers.
