The Ocial Daily News Today’s Sponsor No. 2 Tuesday June Greeks propel world trade Greek Prime minister Alexis Tsipras kicked off Posidonia 2016, the world’s most prestigious shipping event, on June 6 in the presence heads of states, European Union officials, Greek cabinet members, foreign maritime ministers, board members of the Union of Greek Shipowners, chairmen of international organisations and as some 1,500 exhibitors and delegates from around the world. Addressing the global audience, Prime minister Tsipras said Greek oceangoing shipping contributes 7% to Greece’s gross GDP whilst providing significant direct and indirect employment opportunities. He also said the strength of Greek shipping has helped position the country at the epicentre of the changes and developments the global economy is undergoing. He added investments for the improvement of the existing infrastructure are essential and would provide Greece with yet another competitive advantage on the country’s road to recovery. Shipping and Island Policy minister, Theodoris Dritsas, said: "Despite the difficulties in both the national and global economic environment, Greek shipping managed to maintain its leading position. More than 1,350 shipping companies are established in Greece, mainly in Piraeus, constituting the driving force for a number of related economic activities providing almost 200,000 jobs both at sea and ashore, covering over 30% of the country’s trade deficit." IMO secretary general Kitack Lim said: “Shipping has a wonderful ability to tap into rich currents of innovation and excellence in key areas, from safety to clean shipping – and beyond. Events like Posidonia provide a valuable opportunity to showcase all that creativity and energy; to mix, to mingle, to make friends and do business." Matej Zakonjšek, head of cabinet to Commissioner for Transport, European Commission said: “I am delighted to see the vitality of the sector in spite of the hardships – an impressive example of this is the Greek shipping community hosting this event. The potential of shipping to bring prosperity to Europe is strong, and so is our resolve to work together with all of you to overcome any stormy seas ahead." Theodore Veniamis, Union of Greek Shipowners president, added: “Greek shipowners, and the Greek state, as representatives of a traditional maritime country, currently amounting to approximately 50% of European shipping and 20% of the world fleet in terms of tonnage, have been strong supporters of the institutional role of the Imo as the only appropriate legislative body for shipping. “I would like to stress the priority for European legislators should be to form a shipping policy focused on maintaining the competitiveness of community shipping. A policy that takes into account the international character of shipping and the necessary prerequisite to be competitive, hence, sustainable in order to continue operating smoothly to the benefit of the European economy, public welfare and world trade,” said Veniamis. Twenty-six years ago, GeorgeFoustanos – once one of theyoungest elected members of theboard of the powerful Union ofGreek Shipowners – made a careerchange, convinced theachievements of Greek shippingwere being overlooked by shippingcompatriots at home and abroadand by Greeks generally.

“I became acutely aware theaccomplishments of Greeks inshipping were not recognised and soafter two decades in the business, Idecided to make a career change inorder to raise public awareness aboutthe timeless achievements of theGreek shipping community. Shippinghas a past, a present and a future and Iwanted to do what I could to ensurefuture generations are well aware ofthe country’s rich maritime heritage,”explains Foustanos, a fourth-generation shipping man from theisland of Syros – an importantindustrial, financial and shipping hubof the 19th century.

“Not only has Greek shipping as a

business sector achieved great things, but also those involved in it, bothowners and seafarers, have doneremarkable things for their country andtheir compatriots. Maritimeentrepreneurs never asked for anyfinancial assistance from the Greekstate. At the same time, apart from theirbusiness activities, they have supportedGreece through significant investmentin other sectors, as well as meaningfulcharitable and cultural projects.

“Just looking back over the pastcouple of decades, many hundreds ofmillions of dollars have been investedin making life better for others. Schools, hospitals, cultural centres, museums, community projects, educationalscholarships, have all been madepossible thanks to funds earned fromthe sea, with investments ranging fromaround $700m down to a few thousanddollars a project,” says Foustanos.

Though the idea of a shippingmuseum has never entered his mindthen, the germ had been sown andlike everything else today technologyhas taken over.

In the two years since its launch atPosidonia 2014, the Greek ShippingMiracle (www.greekshippingmiracle.org),has not only become the first onlinemuseum about Greek shipping, it hasattracted visitors from over 140countries, while reception in the socialmedia, particularly on Facebook, has

been impressive with about 50,000followers.

Following years of relevant researchand numerous publications, the GreekShipping Miracle online museum wasintroduced in order to offer the chanceto people in Greece and abroad, tolearn free of charge, but in detail, aboutGreek merchant shipping since itstransition from sail to steam in the mid-late 19th century, allowing viewers toappreciate its timeless contribution inthe global economy.

The Greek Shipping Miracle issupported by some 25 renownedGreek shipping establishments, whileat the moment more than 50companies from various maritimesectors, including shipowners /managers, classification societies, P&Iclubs, bankers, law firms andshipbrokers, are “operation supporters”of the innovative project.

In the digital age we live in, theInternet and the social media arewithout doubt the ideal means ofcommunicating the above, especiallyto younger generations.
