Complete the map below as shown in the example : trace an arrow from the written sentence to the country where French is spoken (e.g.: in the UK I can speak English) Au Royaume-Uni je peux parler anglais En France je peux parler franais Au Luxembourg je peux parler franais

En Belgique je peux parler franais

En Suisse je peux parler franais

Remember that in French some words are either masculine or feminine. Some little words like le or la (we call them articles) placed at the front of the word can help you know whether the word is masculine or feminine. In French, countries are part of those words which have a gender (thats what we call masculine and feminine). Look at the 5 countries below and colour in blue the masculine countries and in red the feminine countries

16d - Key to the pictures

Janvier : La galette des Rois (the cake or "wafer" of the Kings) is a cake celebrating the Epiphany and traditionally sold and consumed a few days before and after this date. In modern France, the cakes can be found in most bakeries during the month of January. The cake consists of flaky puff pastry layers with a dense center of frangipane. Tradition holds that the cake is to draw the kings to the Epiphany. A figurine, which can represent anything from a car to a cartoon character, is hidden in the cake and the person who finds the trinket la fve (literally the broad bean) in their slice becomes king for the day and will have to offer the next cake. Broad beans were initially used, but they were replaced in 1870 by figurines out of porcelain or - more recently - plastic. Nevertheless, these trinkets are still called fves. As there is a wide variety of figurines, they are popular collectibles and can often be bought separately. Individual bakeries may offer a specialized line of fves depicting diverse themes from great works of art to classic movie stars and popular cartoon characters. The cakes are usually sold in special bags, some of which can be used to heat the cake in a microwave without ruining the crispness of the cake. A paper crown is included with the cake to crown the "king" who finds the fve in their piece of cake. To ensure a random distribution of the cake shares, it is traditional for the youngest person to place themselves under the table and name the recipient of the share which is indicated by the person in charge of the service. Formerly, one divided the cake in as many shares as guests, plus one. The latter, called "the share of God," "share of the Virgin Mary," or "share of the poor" was intended for the first poor person to arrive at the home. The French President is not allowed to to draw the kings on Epiphany because of the etiquette rules. Fvrier: Traditional skiing holiday in France, les vacances de neige. Mars: Traditional Easter eggs in the Christian world les oeufs de Pques Avril: April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day although not a holiday in its own right is a notable day celebrated in many countries on April 1. The day is marked by the commission of hoaxes and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, enemies and neighbors, or sending them on fools' errands, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible. Traditionally, in some countries, the jokes only last until noon. If you play a trick on someone after this time you are the April Fool. Elsewhere, for example in France, the jokes may last all day. The April 1 tradition in France and French-speaking Canada includes poisson d'avril (literally "April's fish"), attempting to attach a paper fish to the victim's back without being noticed. This is also widespread in other nations, such as Italy (where the term pesce d'aprile (literally "April's fish") is also used to refer to any jokes done during the day). Mai : Le Muguet. Traditionally, Lily of the Valley is sold in the streets of France on May 1 to celebrate la Fte du Travail. Juin: La Fte des pres. Father's Day is a celebration inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting, and to honor and commemorate fathers and forefathers. Father's Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves gift-giving, and special dinners to fathers and familyoriented activities. In France and in the UK it is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. Juillet: Bastille Day is the French national holiday, celebrated on 14 July each year. In France, it is called Fte Nationale ("National Celebration") in official parlance, or more commonly quatorze juillet ("14 July"). It commemorates the 1790 Fte de la Fdration, held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789; the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille fortress-prison was seen as a symbol of the uprising of the modern French nation, and of the reconciliation of all the French inside the constitutional monarchy which preceded the First Republic, during the French Revolution. Aot: The favourite month of the French nation when half of the country is on holiday. Septembre: Back to school for every school children in France, cest la rentre des classes. Octobre: Fallen leaves, les feuilles mortes Novembre : Guy Fawkes might is not celebrated in France, but Halloween is more and more popular. Dcembre: Joyeux Nel. Merry Christmas.
