Nested in the Rhone river elbow, among vineyards and orchards, Martigny is the most dynamic town in the Valais – there you can visit the Pierre Gianadda Foundation and its prestigious exhibitions, the Morand Distillery and its renowned Williamine ©, as well as the museum dedicated to the legendary St. Bernard Dogs, and the large Valais Fair, with its 200,000 annual visitors.

At the crossroads between France and Italy, and at the heart of the French Valaisian Alps, the Martigny region will welcome and surprise you with its cultural wealth, mild climate and a wide variety of activities along the entire year: the St. Maurice Abbey treasure, the thermal baths of Saillon, Ovronnaz or Lavey, the ski tracks of the Marécottes and Ovronnaz, the Châtelard amusement park, and the Marécottes zoo – all of which are essential attractions.

An unforgettable stay awaits you in Martigny

Martigny-la-romaine (Roman Martigny) has preserved its archaeological remains, while the town of St. Maurice exhibits the Abbey’s Treasure. There is art everywhere, at the turn of a corner, in the woodcut engravings on a cabin, in city roundabouts, at the Pierre Gianadda Foundation and its park of sculptures, at the Musée Marconi, along the ancient Roman road Via Francigena, in the stained glass windows of St. Maurice’s Abbey, as well as those created by Hans Erni.

The “queen fight” (cow fight), the St. Bernard dogs, the Farinet vineyard and the cheese produced in high mountain pastures are some of our strongest traditions.

Come enjoy them with us!

The asparagus, a Valais specialty, is cultivated between April and May, particularly in Saillon, but also in Charrat. The most famous variety of apricot is the Luizet, grown in Saxon, although it can also be found in Bovernier. The orchard fruits are grown between Charrat and Martigny and can be directly purchased from their growers. Chestnuts are grown in Fully and celebrated in October with a large popular festival. There are over 70 winemakers/wine merchants in the region – they won’t let you leave without having tasted some specialities such as the Petite Arvine, the Syrah or the Gamay de Bovernier.

08

Page 9: Martigny Région (65304en)

Apricots, chestnuts, asparaguses and William pears are real treasures from nature!

Add to these some slices of alpine cheese, or the specialties of the Morand distillery – such as the Williamine© or the Abricotine –, plus a visit to a cellar to taste the varieties of Valaisian vineyards and you will be transported to a land of plenty, where the nice weather will invite you to have a snack just around the corner, or a meal at the table of the best restaurants.

Martigny’s surroundings present a range of beautiful hiking trails and curious sights such as the Trient or the Durnand Gorges, the adonis (small yellow flower) footpath, the Follatères nature reserve and its chestnut groves, the mine route or the path of vineyards – all while you explore the Rhone valley. Along the way, you will undoubtedly meet pilgrims walking the Via Francigena between Canterbury and Rome. And for those who love the high mountains, the Muverans Tour, the Dents du Midi Tour and the Mont-Blanc Tour are some of the most celebrated in the world.

BOVERNIER

DORÉNAZ

CHARRAT

FINHAUT

Bovernier’s inhabitants have been nicknamed Vouipes, the same word used for wasps. The village, located at the base of the Catogne mountain, is the home of the Dur-nant Gorges and of the Fountain Walk; it is also known for the open-mindedness and welcoming hospitality of its people. If you stop by to try the world’s best gamay (grape variety), you won’t regret...

Located at the entrance of the Dorénaz village are the cliffs where countless climbing enthusiasts come to practice their sport. 305 million-years old, they are considered the second oldest rocks in Switzerland. A cable-car connects - many times a day - Dorénaz with the hamlets of Alesse and Champex, inhabited during the whole year and working as departure points to several hiking routes.

The village of Charrat was created after its separation from Martigny in 1836. It is known as one of the few lands in Western Europe where the adonis (small yellow flower) grows naturally and visibly during the spring, along the Sentier des Adonis (adonises footpath). Strollers can also visit an entirely restored common oven (four banal, in French) on top of the Vison hills.

An important alpine resort in the beginning of the 20th century, the town is nowadays known for its untouched wildlife, and for the Emosson Reservoir Lake, the Châtelard Amusement Park and its two-cabin cable-car, the steepest in the world. In the Old-Emosson valley, over 800 dinosaur tracks dated back to 250 million years have been discovered, and constitute a unique excursion.

Fully is a town which extends itself 5 miles wide at the base of a majestic mountain: the Chavalard. Fully’s emblematic grape variety, the petite Arvine, grows interlaced in its sunny vineyards. The Follatères nature reserve houses unique mediterranean plant varieties from Switzerland. In October Fully warmly celebrates the Châtaigne (chestnut) festival, with the fruits of its famous 17-hectare chestnut grove.

VERNAYAZ

Vernayaz is the newest village of the Valais – it was founded in 1912, after its separation from Salvan. The Pissevache waterfall seems to gush out of the mountain with a spectacular fall of over 370 feet. Vernayaz is the home of the Trient gorges, which are impressive witnesses to the erosion phenomenon ; it also houses the two Gueuroz bridges with over 650 feet - among Europe’s tallest.
