June is Seniors’ Month in Ontario, a great time for us to honour our residents’ contribution over their lifetime of living and giving.

This year, we paid special tribute to those who reached 90 years young and over. Each celebrant received a wrist corsage or a boutonnière to mark the special day.Everyone enjoyed strawberry shortcake as refreshment.

A few residents also helped to prepare for the event by hulling fresh strawberries in the morning.Everyone was hard at work in this photo; and they were all generously rewarded by having a few berries for a treat.

From left are Anita Reed, Reginald Lalonde, Peggy Hill and Tony Chown.Others who assisted were Manson Cameron, Theresa Carriere, Jan Fournier, Roland Bissonnette, Jacqueline Seguin, and Doreen Taylor.

Yogi, our recreologist Tessa Grant’s pet, made the rounds recently. Tessa often brings in her dog as part of her therapeutic programming. Yogi is gentle, cuddly and loves his job.

Here are a few happy faces brought on by this cute little fur ball.

Meghan McRae, RPN student, enjoyed a well-deserved celebration with her preceptor Irene Lucas, RPN. Meghan completed 400 hours of clinical placement at the Lodge. We wish her well and best of luck in her chosen career.

Residents enjoy craft work from time to time. Here are (from left) Peggy Poirier, Margaret Meyer and Georgina Davidson painting bird houses.

Some of the residents were trying out another X-box game, golf. Here, Anita Reed attempts a shot under the guidance of Tim McNally. All in attendance had a great time. Not great scores, but lots of exercise.

The Cloggers were back once again to entertain, last month. They bring toe tapping and heel clicking music that energizes the crowd. What a wonderful performance by these dancers!

Art expressions

What I love is the mystery surrounding the camera. I’m an artsy, athletic, science minded, techy school teacher. I have taught science, photography (and videography), physical education and computer studies for many years.

Even though I generally understand the mechanics of cameras (the digital process, developing of film, optics) my passion is the mystery of the final print… seeing the images of God’s creation appear on my screen or from the printer…the art of trying to capture an image that will impress both ‘natural artists’ and ‘technical artists.’

I incorporate my photography into all my other passions as well. I love to travel and therefore spend a lot of time looking to document my travels. With school trips, I focus on including students in the photos to give them a sense of the wonders of

Don Mitchell Work on Display July15-August 15where they’ve been with the proof that they’ve been there. With my own travels, I will wait on the weather, wait on the sun and get up at crazy times – just to hopefully make the best shot!

Creative PhotographyCreative photography is also a challenge

I readily accept! What can be done that is ordinarily un-ordinary? Playing with time exposures and light is fun. Photographing food is also fun. One of my future goals is to ‘play with’ water, falling martini glasses, and light… though some think there is a much better use of a martini glass.

I have returned to Cornwall, after 32 years in Alberta, and find myself patiently waiting for a teaching position with the school boards here in Cornwall.

Capitalizing on my time and expertise, I have opened a business that prints photographs at professional archival quality onto photographic and fine art paper and canvas. I also offer a framing service at very reasonable prices (canvas prints must first be stretched onto stretcher bars).

I very much enjoy dealing with the community of artists here in town printing giclées and greeting cards to promote their work.

If you have a wonderful photograph, consider printing it onto canvas – framed or unframed, canvas prints look great hanging on the wall!

Joyeux CopAins

Glen Stor Dun Lodge is truly blessed with such a supportive pastoral community to ensure our residents have the opportunity to continue to observe their faith.

They have been committed to providing weekly services for the Catholics, Anglicans and Protestants. Many clergy also come to pay visits to members of their congregation or in time of need. For all that they do, we are grateful.

For the months of July and August, there will be a reduction in Catholic service so as to allow our Deacons a well-deserved break. They will return to full schedule when September comes.

The Protestant service will go on as usual with the exception of August 8.There is no clergy available to fill the roster on this day.

We are fortunate, however, to have a team of volunteers who will continue to offer Rosary on Wednesday mornings.Eucharist Ministers will maintain their Thursday morning liturgy of the Word and Holy Communion.

Of course, the chapel is available for anyone who wishes to stop in for quiet contemplation and prayer anytime there is not a service scheduled.

Birthday Wishes

This song describes the significance of the symbols found on some of our Canadian coins.

Chorus:I’ve got Canada in my pocketA little bit of historyA penny, and a nickelAnd a quarter and a dimeMean a lot to you and meIt’s more than pocket moneyThey’re the symbols of our landThey’re pictures of important thingsFor which this country stands

The maple leaf, the maple leafIs a beautiful sight to seeIt waves ‘hello’’ to us belowFrom the top of a maple treeAnd with every year that passesIt grows like you and meSo should we all grow straight and tallLike the lovely maple tree

The beaver, oh the beaverIs a beautiful sight to seeHe’s a happy, furry animalLike a teddy bear with teethHe’s never ever lazyHe works all night and dayBuilding houses for his familyHe’s got no time to play

The schooner, oh the schoonerIs a beautiful sight to seeIt’s a great big wooden sailing shipThat can sail across the seaIt brings to other countries

The things their people needAnd brings back thingsLike chocolate barsAnd books for us to read

The caribou, the caribouIs a beautiful sight to seeHe’s a really big strong animalI’m sure you’ll all agreeHe looks like Santa’s reindeerAnd he loves it whenThe wind blows coldSo he lives up northWith the polar bears‘Cause he likes the ice and snow.

As usual the Council was eager to help with hosting events that focus on resident activities.During the last Council meeting, the members wanted to ensure the corsages and boutonnieres were safe for our residents to wear and recommended that the florist not use straight pins as attachments. They were willing to subsidize the cost if we had them made into wrist corsages and used magnets for the boutonnieres.

As it turned out Roy Florist gave us a great discount and the Council decided to pick up the entire tab.

We are grateful not only for the financial support, but more importantly, for their genuine concern for our residents.

The corsages and boutonnieres were very much appreciated by our 90+ year seniors.

I have written on this topic before, but had the opportunity to meet a leader in the field recently at the Alzheimer Society’s Annual General Meeting. Dr. Pauline Boss has researched extensively on this topic, and has written three wonderful books on the topic. So what is ambiguous loss?

Dr. Boss (inset) describes it as a type of loss that remains unclear. In the case of dementia, the person is physically there, but psychologically d i s ap p e a r i n g , both cognitively and emotionally.

This can be a crushing loss to accept for loved ones, and is often unrecognized by others because “the person is still here…she’s not dead…why would you be grieving?”Sound familiar?

She studied the implications of ambiguous loss, and found that it can lead to complicated grieving, and grieving that occurs BEFORE the person passes away. The grief is ongoing, and she describes it as ‘chronic sorrow.’ It is important to understand that these feelings are NORMAL, and it is natural to feel this sadness. You are human, and it is OK and very common for people living with a loved one with Alzheimer Disease or a related dementia to experience these ambiguous

feelings? So what to do about it?Dr. Boss suggests that we empower

ourselves with knowledge, and then use this to reframe our perspectives. She suggests acknowledging the grief, stating that it is true that ‘she is both gone—and still here.’‘I can find a way to honour both him—and myself.’‘I am both a ‘widow waiting to happen’ and a person who is moving forward with my life.’ ‘I have both the anxiety of no c l o s u r e—a n d the opportunity to move forward with new r e l at ion sh ip s and interests.’ And finally, ‘I can recognize what is lost, to grieve that along the way, and honour what I still have of my loved one.’

Then she asks people to map their ‘community of support.’ Who is there for you for psychological support? Does your new and evolving community offer spiritual support? Recreation and respite support? Information support? Emotional support? In order to stay strong and healthy as caregivers, we need to have self-care built into our ‘prescription for health,’ and all of the above factors are critical ‘medicine’ for staying centred and balanced in our daily life, and in our caregiving role.

Ambiguous Loss—The Unrecognized Grief

Dr. Boss provided six guidelines for coping with Alzheimer Disease:Finding Meaning; Tempering Mastery; Reconstructing Identity; Normalizing Ambivalence; Revising Attachment; and Discovering Hope.

In ‘finding meaning,’ she was referring to giving the problem a name…understanding what it is that you are feeling as a first step. ‘Mastery’ refers to recognizing that the world is not always fair, but watching out for blaming the person or blaming yourself. You can be angry with the disease process, but not at yourself or the person with the disease. ‘Reconstructing Identity’ refers to reviewing and exploring your support networks…who helps? Who can you count on? Who helps you ‘stay grounded?’ ‘Normalizing Ambivalence’ ties to understanding and putting a face to your emotions, such as anger and guilt. You need to give yourself permission to feel these feelings, and realize that they are a NORMAL part of complicated grief and ambiguous loss! ‘Revising Attachment’ asks us how we can find a way to let go WITHOUT the certainty of loss. What helps? How can we grieve the person that WAS while celebrating the person who is still here? We can’t expect closure, because the rule book has changed the rules!

Finally, Dr. Boss concluded with ‘discovering hope.’ How can you become more comfortable with ambiguity? Can you start to live in the moment with the person, and celebrate little ‘magic moments’ of laughter or reminiscence? The reassurance of a gentle touch or hug?Laughing at absurdity? Redefining justice?

Finding something you CAN control or master in the face of ambiguity?

What an excellent talk from a wonderful expert on the topic! If you want to borrow a copy of Dr. Boss’ book Ambiguous Loss: Learning to Live with Unresolved Grief, or further explore these themes with me, my door is always open!

God bless.

There’s a guy who’s hiking in the woods one day when a bear chases him up a really tall tree. The bear started to climb the tree, so the guy climbed up higher. Then, the

bear climbed down and went away. So the guy starts to climb down the tree. Suddenly, the bear returns, and this time he’s brought an even bigger bear

with him. The two bears climb up the tree, the bigger bear going higher than the first. But the guy climbed even higher still, so the bears couldn’t reach him. Eventually, the bears went away. Naturally quite relieved, the guy starts down the tree again. Suddenly, the two bears return. But this time the guy knew he was in big trouble. Each bear was carrying a beaver.

Our final bowling excursion of the season proved to be a successful one.Nativity bowling lanes will be shutting down for their usual summer offseason, but we will be sure to return in the fall.

As for our last few frames of the season, it was another scrappy affair. When all was said and done, a familiar face ended up finishing strong and atop the leader board.

Anita Reed’s 123 points were just enough to edge out the competition and claim bragging rights for the summer. Hattie Armstrong, who was ahead for most of the game finished with a very respectable 117 points and a 2nd place finish.

Here is how the rest of the pack fared: J.P. Theoret, 115, Peggy Hill, 109, Jeannette Fournier, 69, and Frank Barry, 65. I would like to thank our faithful group for coming out every month. See you all back there in September!

J.P. Theoret Fired Up in Dart PlayNewcomer J.P. Theoret has already

made his mark in our Monday afternoon darts group. J.P. had a very strong month of June as he found his rhythm and didn’t look back. His consistency was rewarded with 4 bullseyes to lead the way. He also recorded the highest individual score; 92 points. When things are going your way, they’re going your way and J.P. has been hot of late.

Other bull shooters included Georgette Samson, 1, Therese Carriere, 1, Hattie Armstrong, 1 and June McCrimmon, 1.

Good job guys!

X-Box Bowling Catching on FastAs we sail into the summer months,

residents at the Lodge have been trying their luck at a new type of gaming action: ‘Virtual bowling.’

Using the Lodge’s nice new big screen T.V. that can be found in the Tea Room, residents have been having fun experiencing this technology for the first time.

Via a sensor, your movements show up on the television screen. It’s a lot of fun and it’s easy to do.

June McCrimmon seemed to catch on the quickest as she stacked up 4 strikes in her first ever game.

Other strikes were recorded by Theresa Carriere, 1, Anita Reed, 1, Georgette Samson, 1, and Marguerite Sabourin, 1.

X-Box games can be found in your Lodger’s calendar of events.

Come on out and give it a shot.
