Key Facts about smoking Tobacco smoke contains many

chemicals that are harmful to the smoker and those around them.

People with mental health problems tend to smoke more than other people. This makes people with mental health problems more vulnerable to the harmful effects of smoking.

Being around smoke for a short time can make breathing problems like asthma worse.

Being around smoke for a longer period of time can make it more likely that people get diseases like heart disease, stroke and cancer.

You can use nicotine replacement therapy instead of smoking. This will help you to stop smoking and also help with any withdrawal symptoms you may have.

Stopping smoking helps to improve your mental health including reducing anxiety, depression and stress and may mean you are able to reduce the dose of certain medication.

Stopping smoking will save you money. People who smoke 20 cigarettes per day stand to save around £2500 per year.

We are planning to become a smokefree organisation

What does ‘smokefree’ mean?Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust will become completely smokefree site on 9th March 2016. This means smoking will not be allowed on any of the grounds or buildings owned or leased by the Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust.

Why is the Trust planning to go smokefree?Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust’s vision is to improve the wellbeing of everyone it serves. This includes providing support to improve both the physical and mental health of the people that use its services.

Making sure that NHS services are smokefree helps the health of people who use the Trust’s services as well as the health of the people who work there.

Smoking causes ill health and increases your risk of dying at a younger age.

When the Trust goes smokefree what will this mean for service users, carers and visitors?Smoking cigarettes or tobacco products will not be allowed in any buildings, or grounds used by the trust. This will apply to service users, staff, carers and visitors to trust premises. If you smoke on the grounds you will be asked to stop by staff.

If you are visiting someone in hospital please please do not bring any tobacco products or lighters to the ward.

Electronic cigarettes (E-cigs)Certain types of e-cigs (like the one pictured here) can be used on Trust sites, but only by service users in outdoor spaces. If you would like to use an e-cig it must be disposable, non-refillable and non-rechargeable. Other types of e-cig are not permitted for use anywhere on Trust sites.

E-cigs are not yet licensed as a medicine, therefore the Trust cannot prescribe them. If you would like to use an e-cig you will need to purchase your own.

E-cigs are not permitted within our Forensic Services.

What help can you expect from us and what we expect from you

For people using our services in the communityIf you are receiving treatment at home or in a community setting you will be expected to provide a smokefree environment for staff who are visiting you.

Second-hand smoke or passive smoking can damage health. Please help by:

Not smoking inside the house for at least one hour before the home worker comes to your house.

Do not smoke during the visit. Open the windows and doors if you

have been smoking. Do not let other people smoke in

the house. Try to keep one room in the house

smoke free at all times.

If your home is not smoke free when the home worker visits you they may have to arrange to visit you at some other place which is smoke free. The home worker will tell you about this.

Staff at Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, your GP or community provider can give you information about where you can get help to quit smoking.

For people who are admitted to hospitalIf you are admitted to hospital we can provide nicotine replacement products to help with the cravings for a cigarette.
