excitementofbeingpartoftheHorizonHouselemonharvestof2014.Anditistrue.WhatstartedasgentlemusingsaboutunharvestedlemonsintheorchardsaswewerewalkingLinda’sdogs,changedintoawavethatshookusoutofourdailyroutinesforalmostamonth,enrichingourlivesandbringingsomeunexpectedexperienceswewillalwaysremember.

ElzaBresleragreedthatthelemonharvestcouldhappeninspiteoftheurgentneedtoprunethetrees.OnephonecalltotheShopriteCheckersmainofficeinBrackenfellandwewereinbusiness.Itwasthatfast.AmongstpealsoflaughterweshookourlemonsamplesoutofaPicknPaybagsoasnottooffendourprospectivebuyers,andbravedthehecticFridayafternoontraffictoBrackenfell.Havingourfingerprintsscanned,comingupwithanimpromptunameforournew“business”andfindingthemanweweredealingwithwasrelatedtogettingmysisterthroughherweddingceremonyplusasenseofhavingenteredaparallelreality.

ThatSundaythreeofusstartedharvestinglemons.Wefellinlovewiththetrees,generouslyladenwithfragrantlemons.Wemarvelledatthedignifiedbeauty

ofthesmoothtrunks,whichremindedusofhuge,carefullywaxedworksofart.

ThenextdayVissiedeKlerkarrivedattheorchardswithhisharvestingteam.Robust,open-heartedanddevoidofguile,theteaminstantlycementedaplaceinourhearts.Asmuchaswelovedworkingwiththemandlearningtosortlemonsaccordingtosizeandquality,theyseemedtoenjoyworkingwithus.WegrewtoenjoyDanny’seternalsmile,Kobus’sgentlehelpfulness,Johan’swillingness,Phillip’scourageandJapie’sbenevolentpresence.Everyoneintheteamgrewonus.Michaelturnedouttobeourteacher,steepedintheknowledgeofsortinglemons.Howrefreshingtoworkwithsomeonewhojustdoestheworkonhandwithoutanyresistance.Theentireteamworkedextremelywelltogetherandintheendweharvested5820kilogramsoflemons.Theexperiencewasoneofworkinginateamofwarm-heartedinnocence,wellmanagedandorganisedbyVissie.Themenaredevotedtohimandheseemsafair,kindandjustmanager.

Theactivitiesofthepastyearhavebroughtmetotheconclusionthat

wecantrulysayweareadynamiccommunity.Weareinconstantdialoguewithoneanother–ourstaff,boardofdirectors,parents,residents,friendsofHorizonHouseandthecommunityofStellenboschatlarge.

Nowweposethequestion:Canwecreatetherightconditionsandopportunitiesforthoseofuswhoareinvolvedinthewelfareofourresidents,formeaningtobecreatedand/orfurtherexploredinourcommunity?Canwedosointhecontextofpromotingaspecificrhythmforlifeinacommunityofpurpose?

Asacommunity,wefocusedonseveralaspects:

• Developingawebofinterdependentrelationshipsthatarestrongenoughtoovercomechallenges

• Buildingandmaintainingarelationshipoftrust.

Buthowdowesupporteachothertosatisfythefundamentalhumanneedsofourresidents?

Overthepastyear,wehaveengagedinaprocessofgenuineinteractionthroughwhichweashumanbeingshavelistenedtooneanotherintentlyenoughtobechangedbywhatwelearned,andtochangeourapproachtoourcommunityandtoeachoneofourresidents.Ouractivitiesoverthisperiodreflecthowwerespondedtothischallenge.Wehavestartedtoimplementourintegratedvisionforthefutureandinviteallconcernedtojoinusinthisendeavour.

r ’n Verjaardag en die herdenking daarvan is net ’n viering as jou vriende dit saam met jou kan doen. Sjef Craig Cormick van The Goose Roasters het met ’n skenking van 500 kolwyntjies Huis Horison in staat gestel om dit te doen. In Julie, die sentrum se verjaardagmaand, kon ons hierdie klein kunswerkies aan verskeie instansies, skole en borge in die dorp uitdeel om hulle te bedank vir hul volgehoue ondersteuning aan die inwoners en dagwerkers by Huis Horison.

HEEL REGS: Die PJ Olivierkunssentrum, waar die kunsveiling vanjaar aangebied is.

ItwasyetagainastylishanddelightfuleveningatthepicturesqueOvertureRestaurantontheHiddenValleywinefarm.NofewerthanfiveofSouthAfrica’stopchefs,andoneretiredchef,wereondutyinthekitchentopreparethefeast.Thisfestiveoccasionisnowagivenonthesocialcalendarofthetownandverypopular.Thiswinningrecipeincludesfinedining,ourregion’swine,goodmusicandyourownguestsatyourtable.

The chefs from left to right are Michael Broughton (Terroir), George Jardine (Jordan Restaurant), Bertus Basson (Overture Restaurant), and Christiaan Campbell and Michael Deg (both from Delaire Graff Restaurants).

Annatjie Ludik en haar helpers was die wenners in ’n potjiekoskompetisie wat Ad Q Vision gereël het. Annatjie gaan later vanjaar aan die finale rondte teen al die ander wenspanne deelneem.

CLUVER MARKOTTER/ HUIS HORISON -GHOLFDAG GROEI STEEDSCluver Markotter is sinoniem met Stellenbosch en een van die dorp se mees gevestigde besighede. Huis Horison is bevoorreg om hulle as die naamborg van die sentrum se gholfdag te hê. Vanjaar het Arend de Waal, Eben Espach, Peter Hill en Bruce Poole (links bo) in Cluver Markotter se vierbal gespeel.

Volgende jaar gaan daar ook ’n oggendveld beskikbaar wees. Gesels gerus met Sonja de Klerk, projekkoördineerder, indien u meer inligting oor die gholfdag wil bekom. Dit sal op 26 Maart 2015 by die Stellenbosch Gholfbaan plaasvind.

Huis Horison se handwerkafdeling lewer sedert 2009 items vir Markgoed in die Woud, ’n handwerkmark wat vroeër in Somerset-Wes en vanjaar die eerste keer by La Pineta buite Stellenbosch aangebied is. Almal wat items vir Markgoed in die Woud gemaak het, het die geleentheid gekry om die mark te besoek en te sien hoe hul handgemaakte items saam met al die ander uitgestal word.

Huis Horison se personeel het nie op hulle laat wag nie en die tema van vanjaar se Loslitdag goed uitgebeeld. Agter is Lizelle Hendrickse, Lindie Snyman, Elize le Roux, Annatjie Ludik en Helene Jacobs, en voor pryk Carel Botha, Crystal Pillay, Jennilee Michaels en Sonja de Klerk met hul uitrustings.
