How to make the batteries perform longer.

    (1) Recharge the batteries before they becomecompletely exhausted. When you feel that the power of the tool becomesweaker, stop using the tool and recharge itsbattery. If you continue to use the tool and exhaustthe electric current, the battery may be damagedand its life will become shorter.

    (2) Avoid recharging at high temperatures.A rechargeable battery will be hot immediatelyafter use. If such a battery is recharged immediatelyafter use, its internal chemical substance willdeteriorate, and the battery life will be shortened.Leave the battery and recharge it after it has cooledfor a while.

CAUTION When the battery charger has been continuosly

used, the battery charger will be heated, thusconstituting the cause of the failures. Once thecharging has been completed, give 15 minutes restuntil the next charging.

If the battery is charged while it is heated becauseit has been left for a long time in a location subjectto direct sunlight or because the battery has justbeen used, the pilot lamp of the charger lights for1 second, does not light for 0.5 seconds (off for0.5 seconds). When the pilot lamp flickers (at 0.2-secondintervals), check for and take out any foreignobjects in the chargers battery connector. If thereare no foreign objects, it is probable that thebattery or charger is malfunctioning. Take it toyour authorized Service Center.

Since the built-in micro computer takes about 3seconds to confirm that the battery being chargedwith UC18YKSL is taken out, wait for a minimumof 3 seconds before reinserting it to continuecharging. If the battery is reinserted within 3seconds, the battery may not be properly charged.

BEFORE USECheck the work area to make sure that it is clear of debrisand clutter.Clear the area of unnecessary personnel. Ensure thatlighting and ventilation is adequate.

OPERATION1. Confirm the clutch dial position (see Fig. 5)

The three modes of screwdriver, drill and hammerdrill can be switched by the position of the clutchdial in this unit.

    (1) When using this unit as a screwdriver, line up theone of the numbers 1, 4, 7 ... 22 on the cap, orthe black dots, with the triangle mark on the outerbody.

    (2) When using this unit as a drill, align the clutch dialdrill mark with the triangle mark on the outerbody.

    (3) When using this unit as a hammer drill, align theclutch dial hammer mark with the trianglemark on the outer body.

CAUTION The clutch dial cannot be set between the numerals

1, 4, 7 ... 22 or the black dots. Do not use with the clutch dial numeral between

22 and the black line at the middle of the drillmark. Doing so may cause damage (See Fig. 6).

    2. Tightening torque adjustment(1) Tightening torque

Tightening torque should correspond in itsintensity to the screw diameter. When too strongtorque is used, the screw head may be broken orbe injured. Be sure to adjust the cap positionaccording to the screw diameter.

    (2) Tightening torque indicationThe tightening torque differs depending on thetype of screw and the material being tightened. The unit indicates the tightening torque with thenumbers 1, 4, 7 ... 22 on the cap, and the blackdots. The tightening toque at position 1 is theweakest and the torque is strongest at the highestnumber.

    (3) Adjusting the tightening torqueRotate the clutch dial and line up the numbers 1,4, 7 ... 22 on the clutch dial, or the black dots, with the triangle mark on the outer body. Adjustthe clutch dial in the weak or the strong torquedirection according to the torque you need.

CAUTION The motor rotation may be locked to cease while

the unit is used as drill. While operating thehammer drill take care not to lock the motor.

Too long hammering may cause the screw brokendue to excessive tightening.

    3. Rotation to Impact changeover (See Fig. 5)The Rotation (Rotation only) and Hammer(Hammer + Rotation) can be switched by aligningthe drill mark or the hammer mark withthe triangle mark on the outer body.

To make holes in the metal, wood or plastic, switchto Rotation (Rotation only).

To make holes in bricks or concrete blocks, switchto Hammer (Hammer + Rotation).

CAUTION If an operation which is normally performed at the

Rotation setting is performed at Hammersetting, the effect of making holes does not onlyincrease but it may also damage the bit or otherparts.

If it is hard to turn the cap to hammer mark position, turn the chuck slightly in either directionand then turn the cap to hammer mark position again.

    4. Change rotation speedOperate the shift knob to change the rotationalspeed.Move the shift knob in the direction of the arrow(see Figs. 7 and 8).When the shift knob is set to LOW, the drillrotates at a low speed. When set to HIGH, thedrill rotates at a high speed.

CAUTION When changing the rotational speed with the shift

knob, confirm that the switch is off.Changing the speed while the motor is rotatingwill damage the gears.

When setting the shift knob to HIGH (highspeed) and the position of the clutch dial isbitween 16 and 22, it may happen that theclutch does not engaged and that the motor islocked. In such a case, please set the shift knob toLOW (low speed).

If the motor is locked, immediately turn the poweroff. If the motor is locked for a while, the motor orbattery may be burnt.

To extend the lifetime, the lithium-ion batteryequips with the protection function to stop theoutput. Therefore, if the tool is overloaded, themotor may stop. However, this is not the troublebut the result of protection function. In this case, release the switch of tool and eliminate the causesof overloading.

CAUTION The selection examples shown in Table 6 should

be considered as general standard. As differenttypes of tightening screws and different materialsto be tightened are used in actual works properadjustments are naturally necessary.

When using the hammer drill with a machinescrew at HIGH (high speed), a screw may damageor a bit may loose due to the tightning torque istoo strong. Use the hammer drill at LOW (lowspeed) when using a machine screw.

NOTEThe use of the battery BSL1815S in a cold condition(below 0 degree Centigrade) can sometimes resultin the weakened tightening torque and reducedamount of work. This, however, is a temporaryphenomenon, and returns to normal when thebattery warms up.

    7. Mounting and dismounting of the bit(1) After inserting a driver bit, etc. into the keyless drill

chuck, firmly tighten the sleeve by turning it towardthe right (in the clockwise direction as viewed fromthe front) (See Fig. 9).If the sleeve becomes loose during operation, tighten it further. The tightening force becomesstronger when the sleeve is tightened additionally.

    (2) Dismounting the bitLoosen the sleeve by turning it toward the left (inthe counter-clockwise direction as viewed from thefront).

Fig. 9CAUTIONWhen it is no longer possible to loosen the sleeve, use a vise or similar instrument to secure the bit.Set the clutch mode between 1 and 11 and thenturn the sleeve to the loose side (left side) whileoperating the clutch. It should be easy now toloosen the sleeve.

    8. Confirm that the battery is mounted correctly9. Check the rotational direction

The bit rotates clockwise (viewed from the rearside) by pushing the R-side of the selector button. The L-side of the selector button is pushed to turnthe bit counterclockwise (See Fig. 10). (The L andR marks are provided on the selector button.)
