From Monte-Carlo to Macau, Citroën Racing is having an exceptional season. This

year, we are competing in two FIA World Championships simulta-neously: the WTCC and the WRC, a dual challenge we have tackled with aplomb through the joint efforts of a team brimming with commitment and enthusiasm.

On the track, the Citroën C-Elysée WTCC has immedia-tely imposed itself as the car to beat, even as we conti-nue to learn the ropes of the discipline. This terrific start is to the credit of our engineers and technicians, as well as our fantastic drivers. Sébastien Loeb, Yvan Muller, José-María López and Ma Qing Hua are four real figh-ters, and it is truly thrilling to watch them battling it out for victory!

With eight World Rally Championship titles under our belt, we are adopting a new approach this year, entrus-ting our DS3 WRCs to two young drivers: Kris Meeke and Mads Østberg. Benefiting from all the experience of the team, they are improving all the time and have the potential to develop from podium contenders into rally winners. We also support young talents through our involvement in the FIA Junior WRC, in which our crews compete in DS3 R3s.

Our presence in the Middle-East, which began last year, continues to develop. Khalid Al-Qassimi is aiming for glory in our DS3 RRC, while we also have five young Emirati drivers battling it out in the Abu Dhabi Racing – Citroën Middle East Trophy.

One of the cornerstones of our activity, customer racing, saw two new additions in 2014. DS3 R5, a veritable ‘mini-WRC’, now tops the range, while DS3 R3-MAX is a new and improved version of the leading model in the R3 category.

In rallying and track racing alike, I wish you a wonderful season with Citroën Racing.

A TASTE FOR ADVENTURE

Since Citroën was founded in 1919, the company has always combined adventure and competition with its industrial activities. Today, Citroën Racing is the heir to the spirit that drove the mythic ‘Croisières’, the brainchild of André Citroën.

ADVENTURES AND RECORDS

André Citroën was a trained engineer who had a real gift for technology and creativeness. In the 1920s, this pioneer of the motor car industry sent his teams off on several sporting adventures. The ‘Croisière noire’ in Africa, the ‘Croisiére jaune‘ in Asia and the ‘Croisière blanche’ in North America followed one another, and have left an enduring mark in the history of the motor car.

The next chapter in Citroën’s achievemWents was written on the Montlhéry circuit. The French make tuned its 8cv, 10cv and 15cv models and set a series of records. In four years these ‘Rosalies’, as they were called, accumulated 192 world records! Among the major successes was ‘Rosalie IV’ – an 8cv with streamlined single-seater-like bodywork – which covered 300,000 kilometres in 133 days (almost 94 km/h average speed), with seven drivers relaying one another every five hours!

TECHNOLOGY AT THE SERVICE OF COMPETITION

Citroën has always associated its series production models with competition. At the end of the 50s the manufacturer entered its cars in rallies and in circuit racing. The aim was to test new technologies in view of their application to series production, and to show the qualities of the car with the distinctive double chevron badge.

The DS19 shone in the greatest rallies in the world scoring victories in the Monte Carlo (1959 and 1966), the Criterium Neige et Glace, the Tour of Belgium, the Liège-Sofia-Liège event, the Tour of Corsica and the Moroccan Rally.

The SM followed in the DS’s footsteps and battled with other GTs of its era winning the 1971 Moroccan Rally. This multi-purpose coupe also raced in the Spa 24 Hours. A few years later it was the CX’s turn to score numerous victories in long-distance rallies.

In 1981 Citroën began to develop a new racing car, the little Visa. The first Visa Trophy was homologated in Group 5 and served as the base for the Group B Visa 1000 Pistes unveiled in 1984. Citroën then moved up a step with its BX 4TC Evolution. Only five months after its debut, it was withdrawn from racing as the Group B era came to an end in World Rally Championship.

WORLD RALLY CITROËN !

THE BIRTH OF A WINNING MACHINE

In 1989 the former competitions department became Citroën Sport, and the new organization set itself its first major challenge on the world stage – victory in the Paris-Dakar!

On 29th December 1990 the ZX Grand Raid left Paris and set off for Dakar via Tripoli. After 6,747 timed kilometres Ari Vatanen won this mythic event on Citroën Sport’s first participation. The team added three more victories to its laurels with Pierre Lartigue in 1994, 1995 and 1996.

During this period, Citroën won the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup five times, whilst Pierre Lartigue collected four ‘Drivers’ titles. In six seasons the Citroën ZX Grand Raid won 36 out of the 42 events in which it took part!

WORLD RALLY CITROËN!

The outline of a WRC programme began to take shape. The Xsara T4 – as in turbocharged and four-wheel drive – made its first competitive outing in 2000. By the end of 2001, Jesus Puras had won the Tour de Corse. This marked the beginning of a new era, as the brand gradually increased its involvement in the World Championship.

In 2003, Citroën’s first full season in the WRC, the brand was propelled to the Manufacturers’ World Championship by a dream team featuring former world champions Carlos Sainz and Colin McRae, and a certain Sébastien Loeb. The Brand defended its title for the following two seasons, whilst Sébastien Loeb claimed his first two Drivers’ titles.

14 |

| 15

Citroën then put its involvement as a works team on hold. As its engineers got to work on a new car, Sébastien Loeb remained loyal to Citroën. In a privately-run Xsara WRC, he won a third Drivers’ title!

The C4 WRC made its competitive debut in 2007. The new car helped Citroën to add three more Manufacturers’ titles to its record between 2008 and 2010. In the Drivers and Co-drivers’ championships, Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena pursued their indisputable domination.

2011 saw the introduction of a new generation of World Rally Cars. The DS3 WRC picked up where the C4 WRC had left off: the Manufacturers’, Drivers and Co-drivers’ titles went to the Citroën, Loeb and Elena trio in 2011 and 2012!

CITROËN FIGHTS ON ALL FRONTS!

After announcing plans to end his rallying career in 2012, Sébastien Loeb made a handful of appearances the following season. Citroën Racing also enabled Dani Sordo to secure his first ever overall win at Rallye Deutschland. At the same time, the team took on a new challenge in preparing to join the FIA WTCC. For the first time ever, the brand was to take part in an international track racing championship and began the development of the Citroën C-Elysée WTCC. The rest, as they say, will soon be History…

| 21

HERE IS WHERE IT ALL BEGINS… Citroën Racing set up its base in Versailles, a city known throughout the world, at the end of 2000. Its facilities, the dimensions of which reflect the ambitions of a team competing in two FIA World Championships, form its backbone.

Unsurprisingly, for reasons of security and confidentiality, access to 19, Allée des Marronniers is res-tricted to authorised personnel only. The laurels on the facade of the main building, awarded to the FIA World Champions, serve as a reminder of the brand’s incredible competitive record. Before entering the facilities, visitors pass through a display area where they can see some of the cars that have marked the history of Citroën Racing: the Xsara Kit-Car and WRC, the C2 Super 1600, the C4 WRC and the DS3 WRC, etc.

Set in an open plan space, the chassis and engine design office is where the engineers design the car’s components. From the overall design down to the tiniest details, over 4,000 drawings are produced on the CAD workstations when a new car is created. The calculations department is then asked to approve the dimensions of the parts. Citroën Racing uses the technologies developed by the PSA Group for stress resistance tests of the materials and of the fluid mechanics.

At the heart of the factory, the technical facilities extend over 10,000 square metres. The assembly workshop is now split into two areas; one side is dedicated to the DS3 WRCs and the other side is for the C-Elysée WTCCs. Located close by, the spare parts stores can be easily accessed by the mechanics in charge of assembling the cars.

Page 22: Guide Citroën Racing 2014

22 |

Around this main area, specialised workshops – known as laboratories – are responsible for delivering the sub-assemblies. One of the most impressive of these is the Bodywork laboratory, which is tasked with buil-ding the chassis. Starting with a mass production body shell, the engineers cut, adjust and weld the tubes of the roll cage, the transmission tunnel, the suspension mounting points and the various reinforcements.

Another key area is the Engine department, which assembles the 1.6-litre turbocharged direct injection engines used by the C-Elysée WTCC and the DS3 WRC. Around two weeks are required to build an engine. Employed both for the development and inspection of engines intended for racing, the two test beds undergo intensive use.

The Suspension, Steering and Brakes laboratory contains the workstations dedicated to shock absorbers, wishbones, subframes, pivots, steering and hydraulic systems. The Gearbox and Transmission laboratory is organized along the same lines. On the floor above, the Electrics and Electronics laboratory looks after the production of wiring harnesses. It takes seven weeks to assemble and fit each one, which is made up of several thousand connections.

All the components, whether they come from the factory laboratories or from sub-contractors, go through the Metro-logy laboratory, which has a 3D measuring machine.

Once the cars have been assembled, they are given a shake-down on the Val d’Or test track, which can be accessed directly from the factory. This is where the C-Elysée WTCCs and the DS3 WRCs have their first test runs to confirm that everything is in proper working order. After more than 700 hours’ work, they are finally loaded onto the transporters, which leave the factory and head for the places where Ci-troën Racing has achieved so much...

Mad about motorsport from a very young age, Yves Matton took part in his first rally as soon as he had passed his driving test. Having graduated from Antwerp University as a Bachelor of Business Administration, he founded Prorace in 1990. Specializing in the preparation and rental of racing cars, the outfit successfully competed in the Citroën Challenge from 1996 onwards.

In 2002, Citroën Sport was preparing to join the World Rally Championship. Yves Matton joined Guy Fréquelin’s team, combining the role of Team Manager and Customer Racing Department Manager. He played a part in the Brand winning its first WRC titles and carefully followed the emergence of promising young drivers, such as Dani Sordo and Kris Meeke.

At the end of Xsara WRC’s racing campaign, Citroën put its involvement as a works team on hold. Yves Matton therefore decided to set up MY Racing, a company distributing Citroën Racing spare parts in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany. MY Racing also organises the Belux Citroën Racing Trophy.

Yves Matton was appointed Citroën Racing Team Principal on 5th January 2012, taking over from Olivier Quesnel.

PROGRAMME 2014WTCC

2014 PROGRAMMEWTCC

First announced on 19 July 2013, the involvement of Citroën Racing in the FIA WTCC (World Touring Car Championship) took real shape with entry of the Citroën C-Elysée WTCC.

Central to the project since its inception, Sébastien Loeb was the first driver to be confirmed on the team. This would unquestionably be the greatest challenge that the 39 year-old nine-time World Rally Cham-pion had taken on in his career. With the modesty befitting of a beginner, he has started from scratch in attempting to learn about the inner workings of a racing category that is fundamentally different to the one in which he has excelled! As part of his learning curve, the Alsatian driver took part in a variety of track racing events, notably winning several FIA GT Series races.

In Yvan Muller, both Sébastien Loeb’s teacher and his rival, Citroën Racing has a real trump card for this new adventure. After starting out in single-seater racing and proving unbeatable on ice, “the other Alsatian” is above all one of the most experienced touring car drivers in the world, having competed in twenty seasons! In winning his fourth world title in 2013, Yvan became the most successful driver in the history of the WTCC.

Alongside the two Frenchman, José-Maria López is the third driver to compete for the team. Having come close to a drive in Formula 1 after an impressive career in single-seater racing, the Argentinean quickly adapted to GT and touring car racing. Competing in the very popular TC2000, “Pechito” won the Argen-tinean national championship in 2008, 2009 and 2012 (Súper TC).

Entering five rounds of the championship, Chinese driver Ma Qing Hua completes the 2014 line-up. The 26 year-old has solid experience in single-seater racing, right up to Formula 1 level. He also won the China Touring Car Championship (1600cc class) in 2011.

WRC

WRC

With 93 wins and eight Manufacturers’ World Championship titles, Citroën Racing has the best compe-titive record among the teams currently competing in the WRC. This impressive heritage continues with Citroën Total Abu Dhabi World Rally Team’s entry in the championship in 2014.

First seen in 2011, when the new generation of cars were introduced, the DS3 WRC is therefore contes-ting its fourth racing season. The big changes for 2014 concern the teams nominated to score points towards the Manufacturers’ World Championship standings. Having competed in a DS3 WRC on two occasions last year, Kris Meeke is tackling his first full season in the World Championship. The 35 year-old Northern Irishman has been part of the Citroën Racing family for a long time, since he competed in the 2005 and 2006 J-WRC in a C2 Super 1600. IRC Champion in 2009, Kris had only taken part in around ten rounds of the WRC in World Rally Cars prior to the start of this season.

A WRC regular since he was 19, Mads Østberg is actually more experienced than his new team-mate. Going into the 2014 season, the 26 year-old Norwegian had already competed in 65 rallies, including six podium-finishes and one win (Portugal 2012). For his fourth full season, Mads opted to challenge himself by joining a team that in the past he has often tried to beat! A naturally aggressive driver, Mads Østberg is determined to reach new heights with Citroën Racing.

Competing predominantly in the MERC this year, Khalid Al Qassimi is also taking part in a selection of WRC events. The Abu Dhabi driver’s programme includes Rally Sweden, Rally de Portugal, Rally di Sardegna and Rally de España.

MERC

MERC

The first manufacturer to enter a works team in the FIA MERC (Middle East Rally Championship), Ci-troën’s line-up features one DS3 RRC and five DS3 R3s for crews from the United Arab Emirates. The 2004 champion Khalid Al-Qassimi spearheads the team. Alongside co-driver Chris Patterson, the Abu Dhabi driver can count on the qualities of the DS3 RRC, closely derived from the WRC.

Chosen following a selection procedure organised by Citroën Racing and Abu Dhabi Racing, five young drivers from the United Arab Emirates also have the opportunity to show off their skills in this champion-ship in DS3 R3s, supported by the Abu Dhabi Racing - Citroën Middle East Trophy driver development programme.

After a good first season spent learning about rallying at this level, Mohamed Al Mutawaa and Mohamed Al Sahlawi hope to make their experience count. They also serve as a benchmark for the three rookies selected in December at the Yas Marina circuit. Saeed Bintouq, Juma Al Falasi and Mansoor Bel Helei are now enjoying their first taste of competitive action!

COMPÉTITION-CLIENTS

CUSTOMER RACING

Citroën Racing’s preferred model, with the WRC (World Rally Car) and RRC (Regional Rally Car) versions, the DS3 is also available in a range of customer racing models, based on the FIA R5, R3 and R1 regula-tions. Aimed at private drivers, these cars form a logical progression towards the top-level of road based racing.

Homologated in April 2014, DS3 R5 is part of the new generation of cars that are gradually set to replace Super 2000s and RRCs in the FIA’s national and regional championships. Broadly speaking, R5 class cars are like mini WRCs, four-wheel drive cars with a 1.6-litre direct injection turbocharged engine and a sequential gearbox. This season, a DS3 R5 has been entrusted to Sébastien Chardonnet, winner of the 2013 Citroën Top Driver series, for a six-round programme in the WRC2.

Set to be used in the FIA Junior WRC for the next two seasons, the DS3 R3 is one of the leading “two-wheel drive” rally cars. At six rounds of the WRC3, fourteen drivers under 28 years of age compete to try and win a drive in a DS3 R5 next year. At national level, DS3 R3 owners are offered the chance to compete in the Citroën Racing Trophy. These competitions are organised in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland.

At the foot of the ladder leading to the WRC, the DS3 R1 provides young drivers with the chance to cut their teeth. Held in three countries (France, Germany and Switzerland), the Junior Citroën Racing Trophy are contested exclusively at tarmac rallies.

A NEW WORLD TO CONQUER

For the first time in its history, Citroën Racing is competing in an international track racing championship.

| 37

CITROËN C-ELYSÉE WTCCHaving dominated first cross-country rallying and then the WRC, Citroën Racing was confronted with a different challenge altogether when it set about creating the Citroën C-Elysée WTCC. The car meets the requirements of the FIA TC1 regulations, which entered into force at the start of the 2014 season.

A NEW CHALLENGE FOR CITROËN RACING

Between announcing its intention to enter the WTCC at the 2012 Paris Motor Show and making its involvement official in mid-2013, Citroën took the time to study its new challenge in detail. Tests with a «laboratory» DS3 enabled the technical team to get to grips with the basics of track racing. The WTCC and the WRC, after all, are as different as the 100 metres and the Marathon.

The C-Elysée, one of the spearheads of Citroën’s global deve-lopment, was the car chosen to lead the team’s charge. The C-Elysée is proving highly successful on fast-growing interna-tional markets such as the Mediterranean basin, China and Russia, all of which feature on the WTCC itinerary.

Using the production model as their starting point, the engineers at Citroën Racing’s design office began work on the “M43 WTCC” project. They had to take account of the fundamental characteristics of the production model, the constraints imposed by the new regulations, and the specifications regarding expected performance and reliability levels As soon as the first plans were finished, the construction of the chassis got underway in the bodyshop.

PUTTING AERODYNAMICS AT THE CORE OF DEVELOPMENT

In rallying, aerodynamics, while not neglected, is of relatively marginal importance. On a track car, it can make all the difference when it comes to improving performance. The selection of the C-Elysée as the base model, a choice dictated by the brand’s marketing strategy, was welcomed by Citroën Racing’s engineers, as a three-box saloon intrinsically offers better aerodynamic performance levels.

The TC1s are much more advanced than the previous generation of cars. The wings have been widened to accommodate 18-inch wheels, while the front bumper has also been modified, now incorporating an aerodynamic splitter. The underside of the car is flat, and the aerodynamic adjustments are completed with an imposing rear spoiler.

Page 38: Guide Citroën Racing 2014

38 |

| 39

The engineers ran CFD (computational fluid dynamics) calculations on an initial body shape created using CAD software. At the same time, a mock-up was built for wind-tunnel testing. These two processes, together with the results obtained on the track, led to regular changes in the bodywork until the car was finally approved.

ALL UP FRONT

Unlike most track cars, the TC1s are front-wheel drive. As well as bearing the weight of the powertrain, the front wheels are solely responsible for the vehicle’s drive and steering functions. Some of the expe-rience acquired with the Xsara Kit-Car in the early 2000s proved useful in the initial phases of the design process.

The Citroën C-Elysée WTCC chassis was built in the same way as that of the DS3 WRC: the series produc-tion body structure was altered, with wider rear wings, and attachment points for the suspensions and sub-frames. The whole car was then reinforced with a roll cage, the primary component of an important system designed to ensure driver safety.

AN ENGINE DERIVED FROM THE DS3 WRC

Under the bonnet, the work done on the engine was greatly facilitated by the experience of Citroën Ra-cing. Like in WRC, WTCC cars are equipped with four-cylinder 1600 cc direct-injection turbo engines. The engine specialists were therefore able to draw on their existing knowledge to help them adapt to the specific needs of the new discipline.

The first major difference lies in the wider turbo flange, which measures 36 mm across in the WTCC version, as against 33 mm in the WRC. This increases power output by some 20%, to an estimated 380 hp. In addition, the regulations only allow one engine block per car for the entire season, during which each car will cover around 5,000 kilometres. To test the reliability and performance levels of these pre-cision mechanical systems, the engine of the C-Elysée WTCC was subjected to the equivalent of tens of thousands of kilometres of driving on the Citroën Racing test benches.

Date and place of birth: 26th February 1974 in Haguenau (Bas-Rhin/France)

After being talent-spotted in the mid-1990s, Sébastien Loeb embarked upon a meteoric rise. Alongside Daniel Elena, he won the Saxo Kit-Car Trophy in 1999 and the French 2-wheel-drive Rally Champion-ship in 2000.

With the support of Citroën Sport, the 2001 season proved a real turning point in the young prodigy’s career. He ended the year not only as French Rally Cham-pion, but also as the first ever Junior WRC champion. At the end of the season he was promoted to drive a Xsara WRC in Rallye Sanremo, where, in a classic race, he fin-ished second, cementing his place in the big league.

The rest is history: having been in the running for the championship in his very first full season in 2003, Sébastien Loeb secured his first WRC title in 2004. Loyal to Citroën, he won all of his nine consecutive World Championship titles in the Xsara, C4 and DS3 WRC. The man from Alsace also holds all the records in the discipline, with 78 rally wins, 16 podium finishes, 1619 points and 900 stage wins to his name!

Passionate about anything with an engine, Seb tried his hand at track racing from the very start of his career. In 2006, he even finished second in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He also impressed with his performance levels and adaptability in F1 trials.

It was not surprising, then, that he should turn to the track at the end of his rally career. 2013 was a transi-tional year, with Seb notching up his last WRC suc-cesses, while also competing in the FIA GT Series and breaking a record at Pikes Peak. Since the start of the 2014 WTCC season, he has shown that he is up there with the best drivers in the discipline.

Date and place of birth: 16 August 1969, Altkirch (Haut-Rhin, France).

Hailing from France’s Alsace region, Yvan was World Karting Championship runner-up in 1985 and European Champion in 1986. He then moved on to single-seater competition, winning the British F2 Championship in 1992. With opportunities in F1 not forthcoming, he rapidly turned his attention to touring car racing. He was French Champion in 1995. That same year, he began his career in ice racing, and quickly established himself as the man to beat in the discipline, with ten titles in the Andros Trophy and mul-tiple victories at the 24 Hours of Chamonix.

On the tarmac, he worked with various manufactur-ers in Italy, Germany and Great Britain. His eight seasons in BTCC saw him clinch the title in 2003. In 2006, Muller joined the WTCC lineup. After four years at Seat and a first world title in 2008, he joined Chevrolet, winning the championship in 2010 and 2011. Without an official driver’s berth in 2013, he continued with the RML team and claimed his fourth world crown.

Like Sébastien Loeb, Yvan Muller is a real motor-sport fanatic. His eclectic CV includes the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Australian V8 Supercar, the Dakar rally and several WRC rallies.

Despite his long career, Yvan had never worked with a French team prior to this season. Involved from the very first tests on the Citroën C-Elysée WTCC, he has brought the team great experience and an impressive turn of speed.

Date and place of birth: 26 April 1983, Rio Tercero (Argentina)

After some initial karting success in Argentina, José-María López crossed the Atlantic in the early 2000s. He made a successful transition into single-seater racing, finishing as Italian FR Renault Champion in 2002, and winning Eurocup FR V6 the following season.

These results earned him the chance to take part in some F1 trials with Minardi and Renault. He was enrolled in the RDD programme and continued his career in F3000 and GP2.

Unable to break into the highest level of single-seater racing, ‘Pechito’, as he is known to his friends, turned his attention to TC2000, the Argentinian touring car championship. In 2007, he won three races for his first season in the category. The following year, he won the title and retained it in 2009. That same year, he also dominated Top Race V6 and finished second in Turismo Carretera.

In 2012, he notched up a third Super TC2000 crown. Last year, he took part in a WTCC weekend in his home country, and pulled off the impressive feat of winning a race at his first attempt! This success sparked interest from Citroën Racing, who enrolled him in their team to drive one of their C-Elysée WTCCs.

To say that Pechito has lived up to the hopes placed in him would be something of an understatement. With his substantial experience of touring car racing enabling him to make up for his unfamiliarity with the circuits, he has led the championship standings all season long!

A native of Shanghai, Ma Qing Hua built up solid experience in single-seater racing – first in Asia and then in Europe – through appearances in A1 GP, British and Spanish F3, Superleague Formula and GP2 Series.

This took him to the brink of Formula 1 action, serving as third driver for HRT in 2012 and Caterham in 2013. He took part in Friday free practice at five Grand Prix.

At the same time, he also took part in the China Touring Car Championship. After competing in a handful of races in 2010, he won the CTCC 1600cc class the following season.

From his very first tests in the Citroën C-Elysée WTCC, Ma Qing Hua has shown great potential. At 26 years of age, he is the youngest of the team’s four drivers. His technical abilities, honed during a recent collaboration with Formula 1 teams, have made him instantly competitive. His five-meeting 2014 racing programme kicked off in Russia with a victory!

THE WTCC RULESCARSThe FIA WTCC is open to cars that meet the new TC1 specifications. Taking a mass-produced 5-door saloon as their starting point, the manufacturers must adapt a 1.6-litre direct-injection turbo engine and a six-speed sequential gearbox. The regulations authorise a number of changes for enhanced aerodyna-mics, with wider wings, an aerodynamic splitter at the front, a flat bottom and a rear spoiler. Cars from the previous generation can also take part in races, in the TC2 category.

ENGINESEach car may only use two engines and six turbochargers per season. The engine change must take place before the fourth meeting. Any additional replacement will be punished by relegation to the back of the starting grid for the next race.

MEETINGSFIA WTCC meetings take place over two days, at weekends. On the Saturday, there are two thirty-minute free practice sessions prior to qualifying. The two races are held on the Sunday. At some meetings, addi-tional free practice sessions may be scheduled for the Friday.

QUALIFYINGQualifying takes place in three stages. All drivers take part in Q1, which is 20 minutes long. The top twelve then qualify for Q2, which lasts 10 minutes. Finally, the five fastest drivers proceed to Q3, in which each of them in turn has a single flying lap to try and clinch pole position. The drivers competing in Q3 receive 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points towards their World Championship tally.

STARTING GRIDSThe starting grid for the first race is based on the combi-ned results from qualifying: the five Q3 drivers occupy the first five places on the grid, followed by the seven drivers eliminated in Q2, and finally those who didn’t make it past Q1. For race 2, the first ten positions on the grid are reversed. The tenth-placed driver from Q2 therefore starts the second race from pole position.

RACESBoth races are contested over the same distance: approxi-mately 60 km. The starts are standing starts. After race 1, the cars are taken into the parc fermé and the teams have just fifteen minutes’ repair time to fix any problems before race 2.

TYRESYokohama is the exclusive tyre supplier for the FIA WTCC. At each meeting, the drivers are entitled to sixteen new and eight previously-used tyres. The five competitors who qualify for Q3 are allotted four additional tyres, which they must use for the third qualifying session.

POINTSIn both the Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ World Championships, the top 10 drivers at the end of each race are awarded 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 points respectively, as per the usual FIA scale. The drivers who take part in Q3 receive 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points towards their World Championship tally. All the results are taken into account in the final Championship standings.

TITLES The FIA awards Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ World Championship titles. For the purposes of the team standings, only each manufacturer’s best two cars score points in qualifying and in the races (the team’s other cars have no effect on the standings). Drivers in the TC2 category compete for the Yokohama Trophy.

NEW CREWS; NEW AMBITIONS!

Having competed in the World Rally Championship since 2003, Citroën Racing has refreshed its line-up this year, with new crews Kris Meeke/Paul

Nagle and Mads Østberg/Jonas Andersson taking charge of the Citroën Total Abu Dhabi World Rally Team’s DS3· WRCs.

| 61

Used since the current FIA regulations came into effect in 2011, the DS3 WRC is packed full of Créative Technologie. It was the World Champion car in 2011 and 2012, and has proved a wor-thy successor to the Xsara and C4 WRC. COMPACT AND AGGRESSIVE DESIGN Fine-tuned during extensive wind tunnel testing, DS3 WRC’s bodywork accentuates the curves of the original model. The wings and the bumpers have been redesigned in order to attain the maximum autho-rised width of 1,820mm and to accommodate the 18-inch wheels (tarmac version). The front bumper now includes an aerodynamic splitter, whilst a stylish rear spoiler has been attached to the tailgate. The doors have also been altered, with the installation of polycarbonate fixed frame windows and the injection of foam designed to absorb energy in the event of a side impact.

Built using the production body shell, the DS3 WRC chassis includes a roll cage made of over 40 metres of steel tubing. The lower part has undergone several significant structural modifications: upper attach-ment points added for the rear McPherson-strut suspension, optimisation of the lower suspension at-tachment points, integration of the transmission tunnel and the rear differential, lateral reinforcements added level with the body sills.

GROUND LINK SYSTEMS: THE HUNT FOR EFFICIENCY

Since ground link system regulations have only undergone minor modifications compared to the previous generation of World Rally Cars, design office engineers were able to make the most of their experience, deploying solutions that have already proven their worth. The three-way adjustable shock absorbers (low- and high-speed compression and rebound) have been designed and built by Citroën Racing.

Slightly smaller than before in order to comply with the regulations, the 355mm (tarmac) and 300mm (gravel) brake disks at the front, and the 300mm brake disks at the rear, come with four-piston callipers. A water-cooling system improves the efficiency of the brakes on tarmac.

THE DIRECT INJECTION REVOLUTION

Housed in a machined aluminium block, the exquisitely crafted four-cylinder 1600cc engine complies with the requirements of the regulations, which stipulate in particular a minimum weight and a position for the centre of gravity. It is on the car’s 16-valve cylinder head that the main change has taken place. Mandatory in WRC, direct injection posed a real challenge for the engine specialists at Citroën Racing. Fuel is only mixed with air once it has been injected into the combustion chamber.

Compared with older two-litre turbocharged engines, the reduction in capacity combined with the limited booster pressure results in a slight drop in power output, which is compensated by direct injection, whilst torque is pretty much halved. Each car cannot use more than three engines during the season.

FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE FOR ALL SURFACES

With special stages on icy Swedish roads, rough gravel tracks in Sardinia and smooth Catalan tarmac, DS3 WRC has to cope with both varied and demanding road surfaces. Although it is without any elec-tronic assistance, the four-wheel drive transmission has been designed to maximise performance in all conditions.

The ‘World Rally Car’ regulations require manufacturers to select a supplier that has met the specifica-tions drawn up by the FIA. The weight and price of each element are set by the regulations. Citroën Racing has signed a technical partnership agreement with the French company, Sadev.

The six-speed sequential gearbox and the front differential are integrated in an aluminium housing. These are connected to the rear differential via a longitudinal drive shaft. The central differential is pro-hibited, but a system may be used to disconnect the rear wheels when using the hydraulic hand brake. Semi-automatic, steering wheel-mounted controls are also outlawed, and have been replaced with a totally manual gearshift lever.

Like the engine, the lifespan of the gearbox is restricted by the regulations. The manufacturers must choose one link of four rallies, one link of three rallies and two links of two rallies in which they must use the same transmission.

After securing a degree in mechanical engineering, Kris Meeke made his first foray into the world of racing… in the design offices of M-Sport as a computer aided designer! In 2000, the British driver swapped his computer for a rally car and entered his first events. His naturally aggressive approach and spectacular style caught the attention of Colin McRae, who agreed to support his development through into the more senior categories.

Kris Meeke was crowned British Junior Rally Champion in only his second full season. This title gave him the chance to enter the J-WRC, in which he competed with Opel. 2003 and 2004 saw some highs and lows, with some podium finishes mixed with various mechanical issues.

Spotted by Yves Matton, Kris was recruited by Citroën Sport to compete in the 2005 J-WRC. In a C2 Super 1600, he began by winning his class at the Rallye Monte-Carlo. With further podium finishes in Sardinia and Germany, he finished third in the championship.

His 2006 season was more of a mixed bag, despite winning again in Germany. Without a full racing programme in 2007 and 2008, Kris found salvation with the Peugeot UK Team in the IRC. In a Peugeot 207 S2000, he grabbed four wins (Curitiba, Açores, Ypres and Sanremo) to secure the title.

The Northern Irishman defended his title in 2010, but could only finish third overall. He had nonetheless thrust himself into the limelight and joined the ranks of the new Mini works team in the WRC.

Unfortunately, their works programme was stopped at the end of the 2011 season, leaving Kris without a seat for 2012. Thanks to Citroën Racing, he competed in Rally Finland and Rally Australia in 2013 in a works DS3 WRC. After showing once again that he had genuine pace, he had demonstrated that he deserved another shot at the top category and was therefore handed a seat in the Citroën Total Abu Dhabi World Rally Team for 2014.

Date and place of birth: 11 October 1987 in Fredrikstad (Norway)Codriver: Jonas Andersson

Mads Østberg entered his first rallies in Norway as a 17 year-old. After two seasons learning the ropes, he made his World Rally Championship debut at Rally Sweden in 2006. He also drove a Subaru Impreza WRC at Rally Finland and Rally Wales GB. He won his first Norwegian Championship in the same year.

Alternating between appearances in the WRC and the Norwegian Championship, Mads learned his trade with Adapta, the family-owned team set up by his father Morten. In total, he contested five seasons in the Impreza.

Mads took a step up the ladder when he joined M-Sport in 2011. With the arrival of the new generation of World Rally Cars, he began the season by finishing as runner-up at Rally Sweden. The Norwegian then had to wait until Wales Rally GB, the final round of the season, to get back on the podium.

The 2012 season was the making of Mads. He took part in eleven of the championship’s thirteen rallies, finish-ing in the points on each occasion. Mads won in Portugal, finished on the podium in Sweden and Argentina, and ended the year in fourth place in the Championship.

Despite claiming two further podium finishes in Sweden and in Finland, 2013 proved to be a more frustrating year. However, 17 stage wins – compared with 10 and 3 in the previous two seasons – proved that the young Norwegian was still improving.

By joining the Citroën Total Abu Dhabi World Rally Team, Mads Østberg hopes to take advantage of the experi-ence of the eight-time World Championship winning team to go even further still.

THE WRC RULES CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EVENTSThe rallies can last 3 or 4 days. The total distance of the special stages must be between 300 and 500 kms. A rally can be run on mixed surfaces, but all stages must be held on the same type of surface (mixed stages are forbidden). More than 80 kms of stages between two service halts is not allowed.

RECCERecce takes place according to a programme defined by the organizer. Crews can cover each stage twice maximum. Speed is limited and checked by GPS.

SHAKEDOWNThe shakedown session takes place between the recces and the start of the rally proper. Each crew must make at least four runs.

STAGESOn day 1, the priority drivers (P1 and P2) line up at the start in the order of the provisional Drivers’ World Championship standings. The starting order for the following days is based on a reversal of the standings from the previous section. The leader is therefore the last driver to set off. There are two-minute minimum intervals between starts. The stages are timed to a tenth of a second. A standing start is given while the finish is a flying one. The penalty for jumping the start is 10s.

SERVICEService is strictly forbidden outside the times and places defined by the rally programme. The crew mem-bers can work on the car at all times (outside the parc fermé) with the help of the on-board equipment. Services can be carried out in the main parc or in distant zones. The only people allowed to work on the car are the crews and the eight mechanics identified by armbands.During a distant service the equipment that can be used is reduced to a minimum (jack, pressure pins, hand tools). Repairs must be carried out with the parts carried in the car.

TYRESThe manufacturers must designate a tyre manu-facturer complying with the specification of the FIA for the whole season. The Citroën Total World Rally Team has chosen Michelin. The number of tyres per crew is limited by the supplemen-tary regulations of each rally. A car can carry two spare wheels maximum.

MECHANICAL COMPONENTSA manufacturer who has entered two cars can use six chassis maximum over the whole season, and each car cannot use more than three engines. Each manufacturer can ask the FIA for a waiver for one additional engine. Replacing the turbo during the rally is forbidden. Each manufacturer must nominate one link of four rallies, one link of three rallies and two links of two rallies in which he will use the same transmission and the same lot of spare parts (sub frames, steering racks, turbochargers). Finally, a car cannot use more than five sets of dampers and five sets of knuckle joints per rally.

RESTART – RALLY 2Unless stated differently in the event Supplementary Regulations, a crew that has retired during a day of the rally can restart the next day after being given a 5-minute penalty for each stage it has not finished or missed (minimum penalty, 10 minutes). The crew is allowed three hours service to prepare for this restart.

ATTRIBUTION OF POINTSFor the Drivers’ and Co-drivers’ World Championship points are awarded at the end of each rally to the first ten crews according to the following scale: 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1. Additional points are awarded to the first three in the Power stage (3,2,1). For the Manufacturers’ World Championship points are awarded to the first ten nominated crews according to the following scale: 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1. All results are counted to establish the final overall classifications of the championships.

TITLES AWARDEDThe FIA awards Drivers’, Co-drivers’ and Manufacturers’ titles. Manufacturers must take part in all the rallies by nominating two World Rally cars. The Manufacturers’ World Championship is also open to

teams which must undertake to enter at least seven rallies including two outside Europe with one or two World Rally Cars of the same make.

TESTINGPrivate testing is forbidden outside the nine countries in Western Europe. A manufacturer can organize test sessions over 42 calendar days per year.

MIDDLE EAST RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP

| 87

Having come into force at the start of 2011, the new FIA World Rally Cars regulations allow manufactu-rers to produce a Regional Rally Car (RRC) variant of their models. These products are intended for use in the championships below the level of the WRC: WRC-2 (formerly S-WRC), European Rally Championship (ERC), Middle East Rally Championship (MERC), some national championships and so on.

The World Rally Championship-winning car in 2011 and 2012, the DS3 WRC is now available in an RRC version. Visually, the two models are different since the regulations are more restrictive as regards aerodynamic features on the RRC. The bumper intakes are smaller and the rear spoiler complies with the S2000 standards.

Under the bonnet, the 1.6-litre turbocharged direct-injection engine has been slightly modified, with a specific engine flywheel and a 30mm booster flange (compared with 33mm on the WRC). Maximum power output therefore drops to 275bhp. The other significant change concerns the brakes in tarmac configuration: the diameter of the discs has been reduced from 355 to 350mm and the water-cooling system has been removed.

Aside from these changes, the DS3 RRC maintains all the strengths of its big sister: reinforced body with welded, multi-point roll cage offering a high level of safety and resilience, McPherson suspensions and Citroën Racing adjustable shock absorbers, six-speed sequential gearbox, etc.

A 1.6-litre direct-injection turbo engine, a sequential gearbox, four-wheel drive and an aggressive look are by no means characteristics unique to the DS3 WRC! Approved in 2014, DS3 R5 clearly takes inspiration from its prestigious predecessor.

Completing the gradual overhaul of the technical regulations for rally cars, the R5 category has replaced the Super 2000 and Regional Rally Cars (RRC). Today’s new generation of models offer improved performance at lower cost.

The DS3 was chosen as the base model, as it has been for all rally cars designed by Citroën Racing. Its com-pact size and short overhangs provide an excellent base for a racing car. In accordance with the regulations, the bumpers and wings have been modified to give the car a maximum width of 1820 mm.

As on the DS3 R3, the 1.6-litre direct-injection turbo engine is based on the EP6 CDT block. Reworked within the limits of the regulations, it generates 280 bhp, thanks to a boost pressure increased to 2.5 bar. The power level is controlled by the turbo flange, which measures 32 mm in diameter, as against 33 mm for a WRC and 30 mm for an RRC. At the wheel, DS3 R5 is easier to drive than a normally-aspirated S2000. Thanks to the turbo charger, 400 Nm of torque are delivered over a large operating range. The transmission is provided by a five-speed sequential gearbox and by limited-slip front and rear differentials.

Very similar to a WRC, in terms of both handling and performance, the DS3 R5 is equipped with dampers specifically developed by Citroën Racing. The use of parts common to the gravel and tarmac versions provides a versatile product that is effective on all surfaces, while also keeping costs under control.

Approved in April 2014, the DS3 R5 is marketed by Citroën Racing. Sébastien Chardonnet was the lucky re-cipient of the first one produced. Having won the Citroën Top Driver series in 2013, the Frenchman is now racing in WRC2.

Undisputedly the leading car in its category since the middle of 2010, the DS3 R3 has undergone a number of changes to enhance its performance, reliability and safety. From now on, it will go by the name “DS3 R3-MAX”!

Citroën Racing has deployed its extensive expertise in passive safety and chassis rigidity on DS3 R3-MAX. The standard monocoque chassis has been re-welded and fitted with a multi-point roll cage. In order to improve weight distribution, the battery and automatic fire extinguisher are positioned behind the seats. A steel skidplate protects the underside of the engine and also helps to lower the car’s centre of gravity. The flexible, FIA-homologated fuel tank remains in its original position.

DS3 R3-MAX’s efficiency on all road surfaces stems from the quality of its suspension system. At the front, the production sub-frame has been altered so that tubular wishbones can be fitted. The axle is both lighter and stronger than on the production model. The shock absorbers boast several innovative features: the aluminium struts are lubricated in an oil bath, which improves the consistency and lifespan of the sus-pension, and the lower, frontally-offset anchor point, which increases the travel and the guiding length.

Equipped with a ‘pedal box’ with a dual master cylinder, the braking system received particular attention during the development of DS3 R3-MAX. The front brake disks on the tarmac version have been thicke-ned from 33mm to 34mm. The handbrake is hydraulic.

The other area of the car to have undergone a major overhaul on DS3 R3-MAX is the engine. Based on the EP6 CDT block, the 1.6-litre direct-injection turbo engine has had its power raised to 234 bhp, while its torque now peaks at 430 N.m. The most visible changes are in the specially-designed exhaust mani-fold and the relocated turbocharger. In accordance with the regulations, many parts have been taken or adapted from the production model.

DS3 R3-MAX is fitted with a semi-automatic six-speed gearbox, which reduces the time spent changing gears and increases reliability. The electronic management system only authorizes gear changes when the engine parameters allow it. The clutch pedal is still present, but is only used to drive off. During sub-sequent gear changes, the clutch is automatically controlled. The specific elements of the semi-automatic control (solenoid valves, actuators and pressure unit) have all been taken from the production model and adapted to the gearbox.

Designed to promote easier access to motorsport, the DS3 R1 is the base model for the Citroën Ra-cing customer-racing range. Particularly easy to get to grips with, this product is marketed as a trai-ning tool, in which owners can learn about rally driving in complete safety and at a reasonable cost.

Created by the FIA, the R1 category is intended to promote the introduction of affordable and accessible rally cars. In order to keep costs down to the strict minimum, most mechanical components must remain as standard, such as the powertrain, chassis and suspension systems, brakes, etc. As performance is not the main priority, most of the permitted changes relate to driver and co-driver safety.

Based on DS3 So Chic VTi 120, the R1 version makes the most of the advantages of the production model, especially its 1.6VTi direct injection engine, the result of collaboration between PSA Peugeot Citroën and the BMW Group. The engine is coupled with a standard, manual synchromesh gearbox, with short torque settings.

As safety is one of the main priorities for both Citroën Racing and the FIA, DS3 R1 sets a new benchmark in this area in the category. The monocoque chassis is taken off the production line in order for a welded roll cage to be fitted, the design of which is based on the DS3 R3.

All of the components used on the chassis and suspension systems are as standard, except for the shock absorbers, which are developed by Citroën Racing. The brakes have been improved thanks the use of racing brake pads and fluid. The one-piece wheels are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport R tyres.

Considered to be very easy to get to grips with by the drivers who took part in its development, DS3 R1 delivers real driving pleasure and comfort as well as the best performance levels in its category. This attractive customer racing product puts users on the first rung of a ladder which leads on to DS3 R3-MAX and, for the most talented drivers, DS3 R5 and DS3 WRC...

Since 2013, DS3 R1 has been used in the Citroën Racing Trophy Junior champioships, held in Germany, France and Switzerland. In France, drivers involved in the FFSA’s “Rallye Jeunes” (Young Rally Drivers) programme take part in this competition, which also acts as a support category for the French Junior Rally Championship.
