En quittant ce monde, Gilbert Bécaud a attristé tous ceux qui l’ont connu,amis proches et amoureux de la bonne chanson. Evocation d’un artiste fidèle

à Crans-Montana durant près de 40 ans.

Considered in the resort as a man who liked aquiet family life, Gilbert Bécaud sometimesreturned to his chalet between seasons in order tocompose his songs in peace, often accompaniedby the lyric writer Louis Amade. He hated jostlingcrowds but savoured his popularity. He washailed like someone from round here when youmet him in cafés, on the ski-tracks or even in hisdressing-room at the Olympia.“He was first and foremost an artist who came uphere to draw inspiration”, reports BoubyRombaldi. “To me, he will remain a man full ofcharm, a loyal friend who always contacted me assoon as he got to Crans and never failed to call onmy mother to enquire how she was. We used tosit down at a well-garnished table, to talk atlength about our worries and our plans.”The bonds of friendship between the two mengrew into something familiar, almost family-like,and Gilbert sometimes invited his friend to visithim at his farm in the Poitou region. «Quelqu’un du coin»

Considéré dans la station comme un homme épris de tranquillité familiale, Gilbert Bécaudrejoignait parfois son chalet hors saison pour ycomposer en paix, accompagné parfois par leparolier Louis Amade. Il redoutait l’agression dela foule, tout en savourant sa popularité. On l’acceptait comme «quelqu’un du coin», au bistrot et sur les pistes, jusque dans sa loge à l’Olympia. «C’était avant tout un artiste, qui venait seressourcer chez nous, témoigne Bouby Rombaldi.Il restera pour moi un homme charmant, un amifidèle qui m’appelait dès son arrivée à Crans, etne manquait jamais de rendre visite à ma mèrepour prendre de ses nouvelles. Nous discutions delongues heures de nos soucis, de nos projets,autour d’une bonne table.»La connivence entre les deux hommes devientfamilière, voire familiale, et Gilbert invite parfoisson copain à lui rendre visite dans sa ferme duPoitou. As a surprise guest on a TV pro-gramme, Bouby Rombaldi wasvery moved to learn that in writ-ing the song “Mon père à moi”Gilbert Bécaud had been inspiredby Bouby’s own father, Jacques,a carpenter and cabinet-maker. “Il savait fabriquer des armoiresaux lavandes où les jeunes mariésrangeraient leurs draps blancs, etoù les vieux mariés rangeraientleurs légendes.
