Vision Statement: Freeze Frame strives to be an international leader in providing an enriching cinematic and multi-media experience through the delivery of diverse and innovative programming that educates, inspires and empowers children and youth.

Mission Statement: Freeze Frame provides educational opportunities for children and youth to explore the art of filmmaking and multi-media, through screenings of international film and video and hands-on workshops in a multilingual and multicultural environment.

Vision : En offrant une programmation aussi diversifiée qu’innovatrice, qui a pour but d’éduquer, d’inspirer et de développer le sens de l’initiative des enfants et des jeunes, Freeze Frame aspire à devenir un leader dans la production d’expériences multimédias et cinématographiques enrichissantes.

Pascal Boutroy et Nicole Matiation Co-fondateurs de Freeze FrameCette 16e édition du Festival de films pour jeunes marque le début d’une nouvelle ère à Freeze Frame. Tout d’abord, les bureaux du Festival ont déménagé dans les locaux du Centre culturel franco-manitobain, scellant ainsi un partenariat de programmation important avec cet organisme. Depuis maintenant plusieurs mois, Freeze Frame et le CCFM offrent une programmation mensuelle de films pour enfants, en complément du déluge de films qui déferle sur la province au temps du Festival.2012 marque également la première année où la programmation du festival sera entièrement faite par Jim Sanders et non par l’un des fondateurs du Festival. En fait, cette année en coordination avec le conseil d’administration, nous remettons la destinée du Festival entre les mains de Jim Sanders et Anna Hovland, qui assurent aujourd’hui la direction de Freeze Frame. Jim et Anna apportent au festival

un mélange détonnant de créativité, de compétence et d’enthousiasme qui présage bien de l’avenir. Nous sommes certains qu’avec le soutien des autres employés, du conseil d’administration et des bénévoles, ils sauront émerveiller de nouvelles générations de jeunes. Bon cinéma !

location has moved to the Franco-Manitoban Cultural Centre (CCFM), sealing an important new programming partnership. For several months now Freeze Frame and the CCFM have been

offering monthly screenings of films for young people as a complement to the wide selection of films offered during the Festival itself.

2012 is also the first year that Jim Sanders will take over the entire responsibility of programming the Festival from the founding co-directors.

In fact, this year, in coordination with the Board of Directors, we have handed off the Festival to Jim Sanders and Anna Hovland, who have taken over the direction and management of the organization. Jim and Anna bring a perfect mix of creativity, competence and enthusiasm that bodes well for the future of Freeze Frame. We are confident that with the support of other Freeze Frame employees, the Board of Directors and volunteers, Jim and Anna will offer wonderful cinematic experiences to young people for many years to come.See ya at the movies!

Jim SandersArtistic Director16 years ago Nicole Matation and Pascal Boutroy created Freeze Frame, a visionary organization that has led the way in introducing quality cinema and media education to young Manitobans. Stepping into the role of Artistic Director for Freeze Frame has taught me that this is an organization born out of heart and a desire to make the world a better place. I’m excited for the opportunity to lead Freeze Frame into the future.We’ve experienced some big changes in 2012 and have moved our office and festival to the Franco-Manitoban Cultural Centre (CCFM), a bilingual, open and welcoming community space. We have created Media Zone, a free, drop-in digital playground where youth and the public can engage with fun cutting-edge interactive installations. We also dedicate a whole day to documentary & our exiting new pilot project The Manitoba Storybook.How suitable then that our theme this year is one of taking flight, a theme that weaves

it through many of the films programmed this year. Be it in the young duck in Leafie (South Korea), to the little girls with wings in Eep! (Netherlands), to orphans in search for hope in Tomorrow Will Be Better (Poland), to a young girl’s flight of

imagination in On The Sly (Belgium).At some point in life we all must leave the nest and learn to fly on our own. This is often a fearful experience, yet a necessary rite of passage for all great transformations. Il s’agit d’un organisme né du fond du cœur avec une ambition d’unir les jeunes tout en visant de rendre ce monde meilleur. Je suis honoré à contribuer en fonction de Directeur artistique et je suis inspiré et excité à mener Freeze Frame dans les années à suivre.

En 2012, Freeze Frame a connu de grands changements et transformations. Nous avons déménagé notre bureau et le festival au Centre culturel franco-manitobain, un espace communautaire accueillant aux francophones et francophiles. Notre programmation inclut également des activités en médias interactifs avec La Zone des médias. Une série d’activités et installations interactifs qui offre des expériences amusantes pour les jeunes et le public. Nous avons également dédié une journée au documentaire dans le cadre d’un projet intitulé : les contes du Manitoba.Donc, c’est intéressant que les thèmes qui ressortent des films cette année soient ceux du vol et l’ambition de toujours monter plus haut. Que ce soit dans le film français À Pas de loup (la France / la Belgique), ou dans Dolly Parton, ma mère et moi (Canada), s’envoler du nid est souvent une expérience effrayante, mais aussi un rite de passage nécessaire pour toutes transformations. Je souhaite la bienvenue à tous, donc ouvrez vos ailes et envolez avec nous !

As Mayor of Winnipeg I am pleased to extend greetings to all those participating in the 16th annual Freeze Frame International Film Festival for Kids of all Ages.

The Freeze Frame International Film Festival is an invaluable resource for our City’s youth and their families to experience culture and diversity through film-based multimedia.

As Mayor of such a unique and diverse city, I want to commend the organizers of Freeze Frame for their outstanding efforts, again, this year in organizing, what I am sure will be, a memorable event for our community. Through the showcasing of talent and culture from around the world, I am certain all attendees will walk away from this event with an invaluable sense of empowerment, acceptance and understanding.

It is my hope that all visitors to our City will experience the warm hospitality that Winnipeg offers, and take the time to explore our City’s many attractions. Winnipeg is a vibrant city that offers a host of activities that I am sure will exceed all

Special Guests Invité(e)s d’honneurOlivier Ringer and daughter/actress Wynona (Belgium)Before he stepped behind the camera himself, Ringer assisted many cinematographers. His first feature film, Pom the Colt, won the hearts of the audience in his native country for best French-speaking Belgian film in 2006. On the Sly (2010) won several awards including a number from the Montreal International Children’s Film Festival and the International Centre of Film for Children and Young People.

Ariel Nasr (Canada/Afghanistan)Ariel Nasr is an Afghan-Canadian filmmaker based in Afghanistan. Fascinated by the pursuit of untold stories, he directed Good Morning Kandahar and The Boxing Girls of Kabul for the National Film Board of Canada. He has co-founded two partner NGOs to help train and promote Afghan filmmakers: Afghan Film Making Education Organization (Afghanistan) and the Afghan Film Project (US).

Jeff Chiba Stearns (Canada)Chiba Stearns is an award-winning independent documentary and animation filmmaker from Vancouver, B.C., of Japanese / European heritage. A graduate of the Film Animation program at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, his works have screened at hundreds of film festivals around the world. Chiba Stearns has also instructed college animation and lectured around the world on topics of multiracial identity, cultural awareness, filmmaking, short film distribution, and animation.

Mike Maryniuk (Winnipeg)Maryniuk was born in Winnipeg, but raised in the rural back country of Manitoba. A completely self-taught film virtuoso, Maryniuk’s film world is an inventive hybrid of Jim Henson, Norman McLaren and Stan Brakhage. His films have screened across the world at such esteemed festivals as Sundance, Hong Kong International, Ottawa International Animation, TIFF and many others.

Olivier et Wynona Ringer (Belgique)Avant de passer lui-même derrière la caméra, Olivier Ringer a été l’assistant de plusieurs directeurs de la photographie. Son premier long métrage, Pom le Poulain a trouvé son public dans son pays d’origine où il a réalisé les meilleures entrées des films belges francophones de l’année 2006. À Pas de loup (2010)

a gagné plusieurs prix y inclus au Festival international pour enfants à Montréal et au Centre international du film pour l’enfance et la jeunesse.

Ariel Nasr (Canada/Afghanistan)Ariel Nasr est un Canadien d’origine afghane établi en Afghanistan. Fasciné par la recherche d’histoires perdues, il réalise Good Morning Kandahar et Les boxeuses de Kaboul pour l’Office national du film du Canada. Ariel NasrAriel Nasr est un Canadien d’origine afghane établi en Afghanistan. Fasciné par la recherche d’histoires perdues, il réalise Good Morning Kandahar et Les boxeuses de Kaboul pour l’Office national du film du Canada. Friday March �th 2012Manitoba Storybook dayThe Manitoba Storybook is a project that uses the art of documentary, media production, and the power of personal stories to bring young Manitobans from northern, rural, suburban and inner city communities together. In June 2012, an interactive website and database of documentaries created by youth will be launched to share these stories in order to increase their understanding and compassion for one another.Manitoba Storybook Day will be the first meeting of many for participating schools and features a full day of workshops and screenings. This is a great opportunity to meet the students involved in the project and get a little taste of what documentary has to offer. Everyone is welcome!

Vendredi le � mars 2012Journée de célébration : Les contes du ManitobaLe projet : Les contes du Manitoba utilise l’art du documentaire, la production des médias et le pouvoir des histoires personnelles pour rassembler les jeunes à partir du Nord du Manitoba en passant par les communautés rurales, les quartiers résidentiels aux abords de la ville ainsi qu’au centre-ville de Winnipeg et du Manitoba.En juin 2012, un site Web interactif et une base de données des documentaires créés par ces jeunes sera lancée afin de partager leurs histoires dans le but d’accroître leur compréhension et de compassion pour les uns les autres.Cette célébration sera la première réunion d’un grand nombre d’écoles participantes et proposera une journée complète d’ateliers et de projections. Il s’agit d’une excellente occasion de rencontrer les étudiants impliqués dans le projet et d’obtenir un petit goût de ce que le documentaire a à offrir. Venez nombreux !
