Dreaming of Zerzura

For many years at the beginning of his career, Fred Jagueneau was aphotographer's assistant to several huge names in fashion photography,including Mario Testino and Annie Leibovitz. In 1994, however, he setoff to travel the world alone, to capture the lives and landscapes of theplanet's "most remote places and peoples." A marvelous exhibit of someof those photographs is on display now at Galerie Nikki DianaMarquardt.

Jagueneau used primarily Polaroid to capture his subjects, then send thePolaroids as postcards to his friends and family.

The exhibit, occupying an immensely quiet and sunny space tucked intoa courtyard in the Marais, features black and white photos of horizonsand personal profiles from Colombia, Indonesia, Morocco, Egypt,Jordan... one gets the feeling of having traveled the world just peeringinto their depths.

Pyramidic mountains are juxtaposed against reaching glacial towers,while families playing beside a pool in France are placed beside Mexicanfamilies at the beach. There's a solitude to the photographs, a kind ofdistance, while somehow evoking the sense that the world is smallindeed, and the human experience shared.

Dreaming of Zerzura la mystérieuse exposition de Fred Jagueneau mise en scène par Nan Goldin à la Galerie Nikki Diana Marquardt du 25avril au 15 mai.

Nan Goldin, photographe prodigieuse à la renommée mondiale marque le Festival d’Automne avec « Sœur sainte et Sybilles » dans lasymbolique chapelle de la salpêtrière en 2004. Un livre violet aux éditions du regard retrace ce parcours familial, historique, exposé avecpuissance et sans fard.

Depuis 2010 et l’oeuvre Scopophilia pour le Louvres, Nan Goldin et Fred Jagueneau entretiennent un lien artistique et photographique fort.

Comme toujours Nan se fit à son instinct, son ressenti, quand Fred lui livre plus de 700 clichés pour donner naissance à cette exposition.

Elle fait des piles, No, Yes, Maybe, et si une image la bouleverse c’est Must be absolutly !

Un choix affectif, personnel sans lien géographique, politique ou chronologique par exemple.

Chacune des photos choisies lui raconte une histoire, 75 sont restées.

Depuis 1994, Fred Jagueneau sillonne le monde pour un travail personnel en polaroïd noir et blanc: Bolivie, Chili, Tchéquie, Irlande, SriLanka, Madagascar, Bulgarie, Zanzibar, Cuba, Birmanie…

Fred Jagueneau part seul chaque année, plusieurs mois durant, dans un nouveau pays dont il rentre avec des polaroïds de paysages et deportraits. Les rencontres sont palpables sur les images exposées, une vraie humanité multiple se dégage. Nan Goldin n’est pas seulement unesupportrice fervente de ses clichés sensuels, contemplatifs et parfois intemporels mais offre son regard aiguisé sur l’essence du travail dephotographe.

Une proposition unique et inédite de Nan Goldin exploratrice des corps et de l’âme révèle la nature originale et inspirée du projet initial et unphotographe à découvrir pour son amour des peuples et du voyage.
