How To Perfrom Hajj

If a person wishes to perform Hajj, then upon him is the following:

1) It is recommended to cut the nails, trim the moustache andshave or cut the hair. Thereupon one is to perform Wudhu or the

major bath. It is then Sunnah to wear new garments, Izaar (awrapping around the bottom half of the body) and Ridha (wrappingit around the top half of the body). And it is better if both are whiteand new. A person is also to apply perfume.

One is the to prayer two rakahs of prayer after which he is to say:

O Allah, I wish to perform Hajj, so ease the journey for me andaccept this Hajj from me.

: After the prayer, one is to utter the Talbiyah.

Accordingly, when one pronounces the Talbiyah intending in

his heart, then indeed he has acquired Ihram. It is desirable tosend Duroodupon the Prophet (s.a.w) after Talbiyah.

5) When one has adopted Ihram, it is forbidden to engage in;

(a) Obscenity, (b) sin and (c) to argue.

(d) to kill, hunt or point towards prey or indicate where it is.(e) to cover the head or face

(f) to place perfume on the body,

(g) to cut the hair or nails

(i) to wear stiched clothing such as shirts, turbans or shoesand things of the like.

However, it is permissible to perform the major bath withwater only. It is permitted to enter into a wash room, or totake shade under the drapes of the Kabah. One may also takeshade under a hand held carriage or something of the like.

3) Tawaf al-Qudoom upon arriving in Makkah

When one enters Makkah, he is to begin with the Masjid al-Haram and is to make Tawaf around the Kabah seven timescommencing from the black stone. One is to face the blackstone, greet it, pronounce the Takbir and Tahlil during which

his hands are raised. If one is able, he should touch the blackstone with his two hands and kiss it. This is known as Tawaf al-Qudoom, and it is Sunnah. After this, one is to go to thestation of Ibrahim and prayer two Rakahs.

Then one is to face the black stone, greet it. After that

proceed towards the Safa and Marwah and move betweenthem seven times begining at Safa and ending at Marwah.

4) Staying In Mina (8th Of Dhul-Hijjah) After having completed these actions, one is to remain in

Makkah until 8th

of Dhul-Hijjah known as the day ofdeliberation. When this arrives, one is to depart for Mina after

sunrise where he is to spend the night.

5) Standing at Arafah (9th Of Dhul-Hijjah) After having praying the dawn prayer on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah

in Mina, one then departs for Arafah. At Arafah, one is to

stand near the mountain of Mercy to listen to the sermon of

the Imam and learn the rituals of Hajj from him.

After Arafah, the people depart for Muzdalifah where they

will spend the night.

6) Muzdalifah (10th OfDhul-Hijjah) When the Nahrday arrives which is the 10th ofDhul-Hijjah,

one is to pray the dawn prayer at the earliest part of the

dawn. After this, one is to stand at Muzdalifah even for a

moment.

One then departs for Mina before sunrise. At Mina, he is to

throw seven pebbles atJamarah al-Aqabah and is to

pronounce the Takbirwith each pebble thrown.

7) Tawaf az-Ziyarah (10th, 11th or 12th OfDhul-Hijjah) Thereafter, one is to return to Makkah on the same day toperform Tawafprovided he is able to. If one is unable, then heis to return on the next day (11th) or on the day after that

) for the time of Tawaf is the three days of sacrifice (Nahr)though the first day is best. However, one is not to delay theTawafbeyond this.

When one arrives in Makkah, he is to observe Tawafof theKabah seven times, and this is known as Tawaf al-Ifadah

(Tawaf az-Ziyarah) and it is a pillar.After completion ofTawaf az-Ziyarah everything becomeslawful even women.

8) Spending The Night In Mina And The Stoning Of TheJamrahs on 11th and 12th OfDhul-Hijjah) If a person had travelled to Makkah to offer Tawaf az-Ziyarah onthe day ofNahr(10th ofDhul-Hijjah), then he is to return to Mina onthe same day and reside there.

9) 11thDhul-Hijjah On the 11

th

ofDhul-Hijjah, one is to stone the three sites aftermidday. He is to throw pebbles at each site. And he is to begin withthe site closest to Masjid Khayf, throwing seven pebbles, sayingAllahu Akbar with each pebble thrown, he then throws pebbles atthe site after that (the middleJamrah) and the last site termed al-Aqabah, repeating the same actions as the first site.

10) 12th OfDhul-Hijjah

On the 11th ofDhul-Hijjah, one is to repeat the

actions he performed on the 11th. And upon this

Hajjis complete.

11) Tawaf al-Wada Thereafter, one is to return to Makkah and perform Tawaf al-

Wada(Tawaf as-Sadr) of the Kabah making seven circuits.

This Tawafis the last of the actions of Hajj and it is the Tawaf

that is deemed a Wajib element ofHajj.

Summary OfHajjHajjBegins On The 8th OfDhul-Hijjah

1 Observe Ihram from the Miqaat

2Arrive at Makkah and perform Tawaf al-Qudoom starting from the black stone. Two Rakahs of

prayer at the place of Ibrahim and thereafter go between Safa and Marwah seven times.

3On the 8th ofDhul-Hijjah, one travels to, and resides at Mina observingZuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha

and the Fajrof the next morning.

4On the 9

th

ofDhul-Hijjah, one progresses to Arafah where he pauses and listens to the talk of theImam. If the Imam is present, combineZuhrand Asrat noon time withAdhan and one Iqamah. On

the 10th ofDhul-Hijjah in Muzdalifah one is to stand at Muzdalifah at dawn.

5After sunset proceed to Muzdalifah and combine Maghrib and Isha prayer with oneAdhan and

one Iqamah. On the 10th ofDhul-Hijjah in Muzdalifah one is to stand at Muzdalifah after the dawn.

6Thereafter go to Mina and stone onlyJamrah al-Aqabah seven times. Then sacrifice and shave the

hair (but no intercourse).

7If able on the 10th, return to Makkah and observe the Tawaf az-Ziyarah (Ifadah) which is a pillar,

seven circuits. Then return to Mina.

8 11th and 12th, stone the three sites on the each day.

9 Return to Makkah and perform Tawaf as-Sadrwhich is Wajib.
