Aujourd'hui il est nommé Gauge 3. Il correspond à une échelle 1:22,6 par rapport à une voie standard. Les travaux de Lilian Lawrence, connu sous le nom de plume LBSC, ont transformé ce qui était de simples jouets, certains mus par moteur à ressort, en véritables machines qui permettaient de tirer son constructeur sur une voie plane. Cet écartement G3 a pratiquement disparu au profit de l'écartement 89mm (3''1/2) qui lui même a cédé le pas face au 124mm (5''). C'est dommage car cette échelle en écartement 64mm donnait des machines parfaitement manoeuvrables, peu coûteuses, peu encombrantes et moins délicates à construire que leurs petites homologues à l'écartement 45mm. Ce dernier écartement de 45mm est appelé aujourd'hui échelle G, échelle qui est devenu le standard des trains de jardin. La plupart des design pour le 64mm peuvent être adaptés à l'écartement 89mm Toby, une machine efficace et ultra simple Steve Eaton est le créateur de cette machine de débutant.   • immédiatement disponibles. Les excentriques et les cylindres sont ceux de l'Eagle2...Ayant regardé de nombreux design de profils de machines NG j'ai pris le meilleur de chaque et le résultat est « Toby », d'après le surnom de mon fils.

    Des caisses à eau longues ont été choisies, bien que, comme on le verra ce ne sont pas du tout leur fonction. Mais elles ajoutent du poids au bon endroit, sur les roues motrices. Un concept 0-4-2 a été choisi pour donner plus de stabilité qu'un 0-4-0.

    La chaudière est inhabituelle pour cette échelle, du type marine circulaire. Elle plus aisée à fabriquer qu'une chaudière conventionnelle de locomotive et utilise des tubes standard.

    La locomotive à prouvé être une bonne rouleuse, à bien des égards aussi bonne que beaucoup de machines en 3''1/2, aussi simple à conduire qu'à construire, et cela pour une fraction du coût.

    Vous pouvez la construire sur un petit tour, bien que ceux ayant une fraiseuse auront la vie plus facile. Si vous n'avez pas de chariot vertical sur votre tour, le travail peut être exécuté avec un scie et des limes ce qui, en fait, peut souvent être plus rapide

    Donc, si vous souhaitiez un machine simple, peu coûteuse et qui donne du plaisir sur un grand tracé de club ou une courte ligne dans votre jardin, jetez un oeil sur Toby... »
