iTesla Main Objectives
• This toolbox will provide operators with tools to assess the security of power system situations from 2 days ahead to real time. The outputs will be relevant preventive or curative actions when needed
• Today TSOs must operate the system with reduced margins. Current contingency analyses are no longer suitable to address phenomena such as high penetration of intermittent energy sources, new power electronic devices, larger power transfer over long distances
To develop a toolbox that will
be needed by Transmission

(DACF, IDCF)
• Are available corrective actions sufficient?
• Are any preventive actions needed?

Offline workflow Not permanently running: only on demand for “offline” security rules update
 Called once per week
Use of historical data and data mining techniques to build situations “similar” to future ones
Offline computation platform has much more computation capacity than the online platform
but only used periodically
Online workflow “Online” does not mean real time but “permanently running”
Analyses forecasts from D-2 to real time
 Requires results of offline workflow
High filtering rate expected to reduce the online time domain simulations
Number of online samples << Number of offline sampled cases

Overall work flow
Sampling of network states (1/2)
• First, sample “uncontrolled” variables:• Sampled stochastic variables:
• Nodal loads
• Nodal renewable uncontrollable injections
• Availability of controllable power plants (thermal, hydraulic,…)
• Local topologies
• Local grid situations (one or a few stations): several possible configurations
• Then, define controllable parameters using a series of OPFs i.e.:• Local configurations (shunts...)
• Unit commitment
• Production levels (both active and reactive)58
General idea: historical data is not enough because oversampling
of rare events is needed to evaluate the safety.

• Goal: obtain one topology for each group of substation.

Time domain simulation
and contingency impact analysis
60
• Time domain simulations are lengthy (~1 mn each, and up to 10
millions of them are needed)
• From each complex simulations, simple indicators (safe/unsafe)
are extracted

Security rules computation

 Decision tree
-No “black box”
-OK with 40,000variables.
The challenges:- to use only the static pre-contingency (post-loadflow) variables to forecast the post-contingencystate, even for dynamic issues.- to make that the samples are representative of the (unknown) future.

Safe classified Unsafe (Missed alarm)
Summary
• The offline workflow produces simple security rules to be
applied on pre-contingency grid states to forecast
No computation of the post-contingency safety status through lengthy
simulation is needed if the rule is able to conclude to the safety of the
situation.
• It requires a huge amount of computation power in order to
do detailed simulations
HPC (High Performance Computing) is needed.

Que devient la fréquence?
Le réseau peut-il continuer à fonctionner?
Quand la fiction rejoint la réalité
16/06/2016
34
Quand la fiction rejoint la réalité
• Increasing share of power electronic devices
Distributed generators (e.g., wind farms, PV panels, microturbines, etc.) are mainly
connected through converters
increasing percentage of loads are themselves interfaced to the grid through power
electronics
many on-shore and off-shore HVDC projects are being implemented or are planned in the
near future
• Grids with 100% power electronics
The matter of operating a network with 100% power electronics is quite well resolved for
small isolated systems, such as microgrids, distribution grids and offshore grids.
The same doesn’t apply for large transmission systems where grid topology and power
injections are highly variable and are not known at any moment by all system components
or even by a centralized entity. Distributed control schemes by independent converters is
therefore the only viable alternative
Contexte
16/06/2016
35
Plan d’attaque général
• 3 grands objectifs
to develop the necessary controls and management rules ensuring system stability of
transmission grids without synchronous machines
to check the viability of these controls and management rules within transmission grids to
which some synchronous machines are connected
to infer requirement guidelines for new converter-based generating units, which will
facilitate the implementation of these controls and management rules
• Contrainte de coûts
Special attention will be given to the costs of the proposed controls and management
rules. Indeed, hardware upgrades, such as additional electrical batteries or oversizing of
converters, may be necessary and could be very expensive. We will try to find a “minimum
cost” solution with minimal hardware upgrades. This could lead to impose some rules,
such as a limitation of the load that can be connected nearby an inverter.
But du projet sur les réseaux 100% EP
16/06/2016
36
• Frequency reference
Frequency is connected to the rotational speed of the rotor
Grid-connected PE devices today measure the grid frequency and generate a current with
this frequency, that is, they “follow” the frequency imposed by synchronous machines. In a
system with 100% power electronics, however, the inverters will have to provide
waveforms at the same frequency, although there will be no synchronous machine to
“follow”.
They will need to generate the frequency. These are also known as grid forming inverters.
These units are controlled to provide the system with a sinusoidal voltage which amplitude
and frequency are almost constant for all grid situations. In addition to the control of the
voltage amplitude these units need to be synchronized to ensure system stability.
• How?
With external signals that will synchronize all generators, such as through a GPSdevice?
With regulators that will control in closed loop the frequency? With virtual oscillator control that provides synchronization between the inverters by
emulating non-linear oscillators?
Frequency issues
• Need
Balancing load and generation at any time requires the actuation of generator controls to
compensate the transient imbalances that may occur since there are currently no massive
and cheap energy storage systems capable to charge or discharge the amount of
imbalanced energy with an appropriate response speed and without control
• In old systems
 Frequency variations reflect those imbalances
• In 100% PE systems
What is the signal to use for power imbalances?
Balance between load and generation
