Abstract Seismic attribute analysis has been done in Penobscot Field, Scotian Basin. This analysis was done to
conclude a new area for well drilling on Missisauga formation in the field. The formation was chosen
based on initial well data that show a promising area on sandstone reservoir in Missisauga formation.
The analysis is focused on two horizons that we called Top Sand 3 and Top Sand 5. We analyse the
RMS amplitude and instantaneous frequency attributes to characterized reservoir on both horizons.
From the integration of both attributes, we can proposed a new well drilling points which in this case,
the points are located on southwest of the field.
Keywords: Instantaneous Frequency, RMS Amplitude, Seismic Attribute.
Introduction
In the recent years, the rapid human
population is increasing. It means, the
energy demand is increasing as well. One
of the biggest energies that human needs is
an energy that derived from hydrocarbons.
One of the hydrocarbons potential can be
found in Penobscot Field, Scotian Basin.
In 1976, PetroCanada-Shell was drilled an
initial well, Penobscot L-30, with the total
depth 4237.5 m in 138 m from water
surface. Unfortunately, it was dry hole with
oil & gas show. Even though the well was
dry, the exploration result show a
promising area on sandstone reservoir in
Missisauga formation.
From that sole statement, the purpose from
this study is to conclude a new area for well
drilling on Missisauga formation in
Penobscot Field, Scotian Basin using
seismic attribute through the seismic data

Conclusions
From well data information, it is known that
wells B-41 and L-30 are dry holes. The
information is suitable with the data
obtained from the RMS attribute and
instantaneous frequency, both wells are
located in the areas with low amplitude and
high frequency.
In the Penobscot field, the area that can be
proposed as a new well drilling point is
around one of the faults (red circle in figure
7). Because from the RMS amplitude
attribute analysis, the area has a high
amplitude value. Then when integrated it
into the instantaneous frequency attribute,
the area has a low frequency value. High
amplitude and low frequency values in a
seismic cross section is a DHI which can
detect hydrocarbons in that area directly.
