L’histoire de HalloweenDomaine: Compréhension

Halloween est une fête célébrée dans la soirée du 31 octobre, veille de la Toussaint, dont elle tire son

nom puisque Halloween est une contraction de l'anglais All Hallows Eve, autrement dit the eve of All

Saints' Day, ce qui signifie « veille de la Toussaint ».

Cette fête, originaire des îles Britanniques, est célébrée principalement aux États-Unis, en Irlande, au

Canada, en Australie et en Grande-Bretagne. La tradition moderne la plus connue veut que les enfants

se déguisent avec des costumes qui font peur (fantômes, sorcières, monstres, vampires par exemple) et

aillent sonner aux portes en demandant aux adultes, souvent eux-mêmes déguisés, des bonbons, des

fruits ou de l'argent avec la formule : Trick or treat! (« Farce ou friandise ! ») ou simplement « Happy

Halloween! ». D'autres activités incluent des bals masqués, le visionnage de films d'horreur, la visite de

maisons « hantées » ou l'allumage de feux de joie en plein air.

Halloween est une fête folklorique anglo-saxonne communément considérée comme en partie héritée de

la fête religieuse celtique de Samain avant qu'elle ne soit progressivement supplantée par la Toussaint

introduite le 1er novembre par l'Église catholique romaine aux environs du VIIIe siècle. Ce n'est qu'au milieu

du XIXe siècle que cette tradition gagna en popularité en Amérique du Nord après l'arrivée massive

d'émigrants irlandais et écossais qui s'installèrent sur le nouveau continent notamment pour fuir la

Grande famine en Irlande.

Le principal symbole d'Halloween est la citrouille, issue de la légende irlandaise de Jack-o'-lantern : elle est

évidée et une de ses faces est sculptée pour y dessiner, en creux, un visage, puis une bougie ou une

lumière artificielle est placée au centre de la citrouille. Avant l'arrivée récente d'Halloween en Europe

continentale, c'était la betterave qui faisait office de citrouille dans des traditions similaires attestées

dans les campagnes de France (Bretagne, Lorraine) et de Belgique.
