I would like to start off by thanking IPDG Mike Dukes for his service as District Governor last year. DG Mike did a fantastic job as District Governor and his work and ded-ication to our District is much appreciated. Thanks again PDG Mike.

Lion Cathy and I had a great time in Milan Italy repre-senting your District at the 102nd Lions Club International Convention. It is exhilarating to see so many Lions from all over the world at one location.

The Parade of Nations was something that every Lion should experience at least once in their lifetime. We were fortunate to be near the front of the parade, number 43 of 153 so we were only in the extreme heat for three hours. The plenary sessions and other seminars were all very interesting but the highlight was seeing Lion Al Hunt from Chilliwack elected International Director for Constitution Area 2 (Canada), and of course seeing PID Dr. Patti Hill from Edmonton elected 3rd Vice President. Two well de-serving Lions.

International President Dr. Jung-Yul Choi spoke several times on his theme for this year which is: Service Through Diversity and to Quote President Choi “We Serve all people in all places. Lions are a shining example to the world of the good that can be accomplished by uniting in harmony. We’re known for our strength and ability to help others—and this is only accomplished Through Diversity.”

Let’s all join together and through diversity, we can ex-pand our membership thus expanding our Service

I hope each of you is having an enjoyable summer.

COWICHAN LAKELions Club

2019 Fund Distribution of $9,000

Bursaries for 2019 Graduation class: 3 x $1,500 L-R: Rich, Ella McCoy, Brooklynn Brown, Jessie McCoy Jessie also received a Vancouver Island University President’s

Entrance Scholarship Award of $23,000!Most of the bursary winners also received up to $7,500 from

extra earned credits during the school year. Cowichan Lake Lions Club also donated $1,000 towards a re-

tainer. The Cowichan Lake Elder Care Society is putting together to fund a building for seniors’ health care in Lake Cowichan.

$1,000 to the Local Food Bank for their monthly food giveaways. Cowichan Lake Lions Club also donated $1,000 to the C.L.

Search and Rescue for a Rescue Basket.

We also donated $1,000 to the Firemen for their Fundraising for Muscular Dystrophy and $500 to the Firemen for equipment needed for the town breakfasts each year!

These donations added up to a total of $9,000 just in a 3-week period for this tiny Club of just 18 members! We do like to sup-port our Community. Where there is a need, there is a LION.

MALAHATLions Club

The Malahat Lions have been hard at work preparing the Shawnigan Easter Seals camp for the August opening. Tables are being painted, a new ramp constructed for the Sooke cabin which will also be painted and yard cleanup continues as the time for campers’ arrival nears. Hours and hours of labour have been put in by the many good-hearted volunteers from our Club.


MAYNE ISLANDLions Club

Our Lions Club has lost one of our “classic” members, Brian Bovet, who contributed so much to the club over his many years of service. He was involved in major projects such as the Dinner Bay Pavilion and the Japanese Gardens and remained an active member to the end. Even during times of stress with his health challenges, his ready sense of humour was fully engaged. We miss him.

During the summer, we take a break from our regular member-ship meetings while the executive members carry on. Our July executive meeting saw us supporting the “Designing the Future of Mayne Island Summit” initiative after receiving a presentation from Lion Jean-Daniel Cusin. We hope the general public has taken an active part in filling in the on-line information sent out to the community.

We also lined up the tasks for supporting the Church Fair and supplying rentals and labour for private functions. The cooking, setting up of tents, tables and chairs involved a good-sized crew of Lions, and right after the dismantling at the Church Fair, the tents went right over to another private event where the tired crew

went ahead with another set-up. Setting up for the MIALS garage sale was an enjoyable day. They are such a devoted, creative bunch!

Plans for our traditional Salmon and Chicken BBQ to be held on the Labour Day weekend, Sunday, September 1st are in prog-ress. Check out the ad in the Mayneliner for more details to find out about times, food being offered, bingo, beer tent, and music!

Members have been selling the 222 draw tickets to raise funds for the Mayne Island Assisted Living lunch program. These always go long before the long weekend at the end of the summer holidays, yet we still get people asking for them on the day of the Salmon BBQ. Twelve winners receive cash prizes of $25 (4), $50 (3), $100 (2), $150 (1), $200 (1) or $800 (1). If you have not yet purchased your $20 ticket, ask any Lion or check in at the Home Hardware store to see if any are left!

We are looking forward to changing our “look” in the near future. Golf shirts with our Lions logo are being ordered so that we can take our vests off for a break from tradition.

John Glover is presently working on bringing our brochure up to date for distribution on Mayne Island, and Bob Soper reported that the Days for Girls project which we have been supporting is now expanding to Galiano and Pender Islands. The number of women working on the packages to be sent to those in need has increased, and we look forward to having an update from the group in the near future.

ALBERNI VALLEY Lions Club

CANADA DAYOn Monday, July 1, 2019, several Alberni Lions gathered to

participate in the annual Canada Day Parade. Prior to the parade, a float was constructed with much of the work done by Lion Lau-rie Hurst and PZC Gary Price. The float was pulled and the sound provided by Immediate Past President, Lion Don Clark.

Prior to the event, a Canada Day Cake and several hundred cupcakes were picked up by the Lions Club at Quality Foods and transported to Harbour Quay where the Lions had already set up a tent. The focus this year was on youth and we had the good fortune of having several youth joining us on the float.

Throughout much of the route we distributed Canada Day chocolates provided by Coomb’s Country Candy. The chocolates

were appreciated by all of the children and a few adults too!

After the parade, many adjourned to Harbour Quay where Canada Day Cake and cupcakes were served by the Alberni Valley Lions Club, musical entertainment was provided and several tents were set up by a variety of vendors.

FAMILY FUN DAYOn Wednesday, July 10, 2019, seniors

and their families gathered at the Glenwood Centre for a few hours of fun, food and entertainment. It was fortunate that this was an indoor event as the weather was a bit cool and rainy. Attendees were greeted by an Al-

berni Valley Lions Club member and engaged in a brief conver-sation as they entered. Ample seating and musical entertainment were provided throughout much of the time seniors were there, with interruptions occurring only during games and meals. The audience listened attentively to the entertainment, participated enthusiastically in the games and enjoyed the food provided for them. In a tent outside the centre, the Alberni Valley Lions Club barbecued and served chicken and beef burgers to attendees. Of course, the Lions couldn’t resist having a little fun with each other during time that they were preparing the burgers.

Children’s Bullhead Derby on August 24, 2019 at the Harbour Quay Marina.

A Valdy Concert is scheduled for October 3, 2019 at the ADSS Theatre.

MILL BAYLions Club

July found the Mill Bay Lions partaking in two Pancake Break-fast’s. The first was held at the local Legion for the Shawnigan Lake community Canada Day celebrations and had approximate-ly 300 people attending this year. As with every year, our MP Al-ister MacGregor was in attendance and presented a new Canada flag to the Lions.

The second breakfast was in support of the MS Bike Ride Cowichian on July 21st and the weather couldn’t have been any better. We had about 200 eager bicyclist come through the breakfast line that was set up on the beautiful grounds of Shawnigan Lake School.

We are finally getting the roof done on our Lions Den. It has been a long time waiting and should be completed by the end of the month.

COMOX VALLEY MONARCH Lions Club

On July 20 DG Cec and Lions Cathy, Tom & Sherwin of the Comox Valley Monarch Lions Club made their 5th annual trek to Tahsis BC to help the Tahsis Lions Club with their annual Tahsis Days BBQ. We were also joined by IPDG Mike Dukes and PDG Brian Phillips. It was a busy but fun-filled day with a quick sellout of the Hamburgers and Hotdogs.

Lions helping Lions is a great Service Project that we are proud to participate in.

GABRIOLALions Club

Lions Scooter has a new home! Fabulous for Cecily!

The Club’s motor scooter was recently returned to the

Lions as the lender was moving off Gabriola. Shirley Nicolson quickly identified a great candidate,

Cecily Danenhawer. Today Larry, Graham, Quinn (Gra-ham’s grandson) and I made the deliver.

Cecily is a very senior senior who recently had to give up driving and needed another way to get back and forth from home to the Rollo Centre and the Village. Living across from the firehall she was concerned that a scooter could not manage the Church Street hill.

Today, Graham and Quinn made the test hill climb and the machine barely slowed down. We adjusted the seat and Cecily was off driving. Nervous at first, within minutes she was showing off her new mobility to the neighbours. The photo on the right is what a happy scooter driver looks like! Look for Cecily scooting along North Road between the Village and Church Street and give her a wave.
