Learning StepsDuring this course you will be acquiring the Hebrew language mainly through

listening and practicing. Your main work involves l istening to a specif ic track

on the audio CDfor each lesson, and practicing it with your teacher during the

lesson. Your teacher will direct you to your material in the book and in the CD,

and you will be guided as to how to study.

The main steps are:

LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN!!!

Only then, read the text in Hebrew while listening (don't look at the

English translation!).

Speak the text aloud in Hebrew while looking at the English translation.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE during the lesson, and useHebrew in your daily life.

Practicing the New Vocabulary

Each unit ends with five questions containing vocabulary acquired in the unit, as

well as a writing assignment, encouraging you to express yourself in Hebrew.

The purpose of these questions is:

Topractice the new vocabulary.

Toput an emphasis on words and expressions commonly used.

To create conversation between teacher and student or between students.Conversation in Hebrew is a vital part of successful learning.

Note on English Translation

The English translation of the dialogues in this book will enable you to easily

translate the conversations into Hebrew while viewing the English translation.

As English and Hebrew sentences are not always identical in structure, brackets

and parentheses are used to aid you in your comprehension and translation:

Words in parentheses ( ) are vital for a coherent sentence in English, but do not

appear in the Hebrew sentence. Words that appear in square brackets [ ] are

essential for the Hebrew translation of the English sentence, but are unnecessary

in the English sentence.

For example:

[There is] everything (is) here = In this sentence, the words there is are not part of the English sentence, but areneeded for the translation into Hebrew. The verb is does not exist in Hebrew, but

is necessary for the English sentence.

Daniel gets off the plane and looks for a service taxi to Jerusalem. He asks Shi ra where the

Daniel: Do you maybe know where theres a service taxi to Jerusalem?

Shira: Yeah, sure! You walk down, and then left, and then right, and then

Shira: Im sorry, am I speaking quickly?

Daniel: Yes, but its ok. All Israelis speak quickly.

Shira: Im sorry. I should speak slowly. The taxies for Jerusalem are One

Daniel: You want to know why Im making aliyah to Israel?Shira: Yes.

Daniel: My dad loves his brother very much, and every year in August, we come for

a visit in Israel.

Daniel: We tour the country, meet friends, and many more things.

you know what?

Benny: Im going to look for an apartment.Daniel: Really! Is this the first apartment youre seeing?Benny: First apartment? What are you talking about? Im looking for an apartment

for four months already.

Daniel: Four months?! What, its so hard to find an apartment in Jerusalem?

A Conversation about Roads,

Drivers, and Traffic Jams

Daniel and Benny return fr om the tri p up north and stand in a traff ic jam on the way to

Jerusalem.

Daniel: Benny, that was a great trip.Benny: Ya, (it) really was an excellent trip. But now I want to go [arrive] home.Daniel: Well, in a little while. Were already almost in Jerusalem.Benny: Almost in Jerusalem? Look at what a traffic jam there is!Daniel: Ya, (it) really (is) a big traffic jam. Is there always such a traffic jam at the

entrance to Jerusalem?Benny: No, not always. It depends on the hour. At [the] rush hour[s], in the morning

and afternoon, there are traffic jams.Daniel: But its 20:00 inthe evening now. This isnt usually rush hour, right?Benny: Right. I really dont know why there is such a traffic jam.Daniel: Maybe there was an accident?

Benny: I dont think so I dont hear ambulances.Driver: Whats going on? Why arent you moving?! Who gave you a licence, your

mother?Benny: Whats your problem? Dont you see theres a traffic jam? I cant move.Daniel: I see everybodys irritated because of the traffic jam. Say, maybe the light

isnt working and thats why theres a trafficjam?Benny: No I see the light from a distance [afar], and it is working.Driver: Hey whats going on?! My grandma drives better than you! Why arent you

moving?Benny: And my grandma sees better than you. Dont you see that theres a traffic

jam?!

Daniel: Whoa Benny! Youre also irritated on the road.Benny: What (can I) do? Im an Israeli driver. And I dont understand what this

traffic jam is (all about).Daniel: Maybe theres construction on the road?Benny: That can very well be. In Jerusalem theres always construction on the road.

Now theyre building the Light Rail theres a lot ofconstruction and a bigmess on the roads. But I dont think that theyre working now, because theyusually work in the daynot at night. Hey, what is this? This driver isovertaking me! What does he think, that the road is his dads?

Daniel: I hear, Benny, that the Israeli drivers are irritated but family oriented. Theyspeak about the whole family on the road: Mom, Grandma, Dad

Benny: Yes, very family oriented. When theres a traffic jam, the whole family getsirritated together in the car.

Daniel: Look, Benny, theres a cop over there. We can ask him what the reason forthe traffic jam is.

Benny: Theres no need to. If theres a cop there, that cop is the reason for thetraffic jam. One cop creates [makes] more of a mess than an accident, a lightand construction on the road. Oh, finally! The traffic jam is starting to move.

Daniel: What is this? Why is [are] everyone honking?! What do they think, that ithelps? The traffic jam doesnt move faster if you [people] honk.

Benny: The traffic jam doesnt move faster if you [people] honk, but its excellenttherapy for an irritated driver.
