BY THE WAY ...

• Today, Pentecost Sunday, the Church brings to a conclusion the Easter Season, and at the same time commemorates the beginning of the Church with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the disciples gathered together in the upper room. As we once again pray, "Come, Holy Spirit" let us ask the Holy Spirit to renew and once again reinvigorate every aspect of our parish and our Church.

• Next Sunday, May 22, Father Roberto will be the celebrant ofthe 8:30 A.M. Mass. Following the Mass, there will be a "Coffee and" to celebrate Father Roberto's 5th anniversary of ordination (which is actually on May 28). During the past five years we have all benefited from the wonderful priestly ministry of Father Roberto. Please take a moment, either after the 8:30 A.M. Mass, or on your way into the 10:00 A.M. Mass to stop in the School Cafeteria and congratulate our parochial vicar.

• This afternoon, Mae Grant from our parish will be among those honored by Bishop Serratelli with the Vivere Christus Medal. Mae, whose brother Father John Heusser, was a missionary for many years in Bolivia, has worked tirelessly for decades in many different areas of our parish life, as well as in support of the mission of the Universal Church. I first met Mae, then in her mid-eighties, climbing down off a ladder on top of the side altar having just dusted the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary! Congratulations, Mae!

• For the next several weeks Saint Anthony's is privileged to have one of our diocesan seminarians, Joseph Boykow, with us for a summer assignment. Joe, who is a native of Rockaway, has just completed his Second Theology year at Theological College at The Catholic University of America in Washington.

• This Tuesday is the Sixth Week of the Novena in honor of our patron saint, Saint Anthony of Padua. The novena service begins at 7:30 P.M. Come out and honor our good and holy patron as we prepare for his feast.

• The 36th annual Saint Anthony's Feast is just one month away. Thank you to all those who have already sent in their volunteer forms.

Feast Ride Tickets are now on sale at $20 per sheet of 30 tickets. The Ride tickets are available at the SCRIP table in the back of church, in the school office, by calling Tiffany (973-427-1297) or bye-mail [email protected].

• Saturday marked the last of our parish celebrations of First Holy Communion. Congratulations to our 98 First Communicants and their families who have received Our Lord in Holy Communion for the first time over the last four weeks. A special thank you as well to Sister Betty Ann Martinez, F.M.A., our Director of Religious Education and Diane Brown, her assistant, and to all the catechists who helped prepare these young people for the Sacrament, including Samantha Adams, Ann Clyne, Jacquelyn Hampson, Amy Roughgarden, Tara Schneider, Debbie Trongone, and Felicia Volpicelli.

• Next Sunday, May 22, will be the last Sunday for the 6:00 P.M. Mass for the

summer. The Sunday evening Mass will resume again in the Fall. Please join me in thanking the musicians and singers who have so faithfully provided music for our Sunday evening worship: Mike Lucibello, Ann Bellotti, Regina DiMatteo, Chris Hermosillo, Paula Hoffmann, Pat Lobascio, Erica Lobascio, Mark Malkowski, Candice Reyes, Abel Reyes, John Ruppert, Joy Piazza, and Matt Trejos.

• Due to the unprecedented food pantry requests from the local poor, Bishop Serratelli has authorized a Catholic Charities diocesan-wide food collection in all parishes, schools and agencies of the Paterson Diocese on the Feast of Corpus Christi, May 28-29. Our parish is being asked to provide instant oatmeal, farina and toothpaste. Donations of cash will also be accepted. Please bring your donations to church on the weekend of Corpus Christi and place them in the baskets on the sanctuary steps as you enter church. Thank you for your aid to the poor of our own area, as well as other areas of Passaic, Morris and Sussex Counties.

• Catholic Genealogy - The television programs, Finding Your Roots and Who Do You Think You Are as well as the web site Ancestry. com have helped to fuel a current fascination with exploring the roots of our family trees and discovering the lives of our ancestors and their impact on our own lives today. I remember on one of these shows seeing a stunned Matthew Broderick, the actor, discovering that one of his forebears had actually fought in a real Civil War battle in which the actor had also fought in a movie.

The Litany of the Saints has the same effect for us Catholics. As the names of holy men and women of every age are invoked, the litany serves as a Catholic genealogy tour, reminding us of the holy men and women, to whom we are joined in the Communion of the Saints, and who have helped shape our Church in every age by their holy heroics and faithful lives. As the names of the saints are called out in the litany, they evoke in us the memory of their virtue that prods us to ask for their help to imitate them in our own lives today.

We are currently in the "litany season." Since the Litany of the Saints is prayed at

the Easter Vigil, during each ordination, and - in a shorter version - at each of our Saint Anthony Novena services we have the opportunity to hear the Litany many times over the Easter - Spring Season and ask the help of all the saints in every moment of our lives. When the Litany is prayed during an Ordination Rite, the candidates - whether for deacon, priest or bishop - prostrate themselves before the altar during the Litany. Monsignor Mark Condon, our diocesan Worship Director (and a graduate of Saint Anthony's School) is fond of stationing the prostrated candidates all down the aisle of the church where the ordination is taking place. He encourages them to experience the sense of being "prayed over" by the whole congregation. As the "litany season" continues, let us all join in "praying over" (the Litany of the Saints can be found on page 138 of the Music Book) all the candidates for ministry in our Church this Spring.

God bless you all,

Father Ray

FAITH FORMATION

Join us in praying our annual novena in honor of our patron St. Anthony beginning Tuesday April 12th, and continuing each Tuesday evening through June 9th, at 7:30 PM. "BRINGING PEOPLE CLOSER

TO JESUS THROUGH MARY ONE ROSARY

AT A TIME"

This past March, the St. Anthony's Rosary Mak-ers marked 10 years of making rosaries. To date, we have made over 90,000 rosaries.

We are happy to have sent our rosaries to all parts of the world - to Africa, India, Germany, Israel, places in the U.S. who experienced disasters, the Philippines, Ecuador, - also to military men and women, nursing homes, hospitals, the needy, children receiving First Communion, those who walk outside abortion clinics, prisons, and more.

Our list grows daily and we are very grateful for all the dona-tions we receive through all our generous supporters.

We look forward to serving Jesus through His Blessed Mother for as long as we are able.

If you would like a rosary, just ask.

PENTECOST SUNDAY First Reading: Acts 2:1-11 The disciples were celebrating Pentecost together when "tongues of fire appeared which parted, then came to rest on each of them." The disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in foreign tongues. Visitors from many different countries were amazed that each guest could hear his or her native language being spoken as the disciples pro-claimed God's glory.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 Each person has received different manifestations of the same spirit to contribute to the common good of all. All members of the church have been baptized into one body because of our belief in the Holy Spirit, who was sent to us by God.

Gospel: John 20:19-23 Jesus appeared to the disciples even though they had locked the doors in fear. Jesus then showed the disciples his hands and his side; and they rejoiced at his presence. He breathed on them saying "Receive the Holy Spirit." He then gave the dis-ciples the power to forgive others or hold them accountable for their sins.

Are you looking for a way to share your faith, time and talents with others? The Religious Education Program needs you! Volunteers are needed as catechists (teachers), catechist aides, sacramen-tal preparation, office and resource sup-port, and safety monitors. We encourage all adults to prayerfully consider whether this ministry is right for you! All volunteers must be cleared through our Safe Envi-ronment program. We will provide train-ing and support along the way. If interest-ed, please contact Sister Betty Ann – Phone: 973-427-7873 or [email protected] Thank you!

SOCIAL SERVICES

CORPUS CHRISTI FOOD DRIVE

The third annual diocesan-wide Corpus Christi Food Drive for the poor will be held the weekend of May 28 / 29 (Memorial Day), and our parish will be participating. The drive, which supports the pantries in our diocese, invites every parish to donate desig-nated food items; this year we've been asked to col-lect instant oatmeal, farina, and toothpaste (NOT shampoo, as previously announced). Please bring your donations to church with you the weekend of May 28 / 29, and place them in the baskets that will be in the sanctuary. If you will be away that weekend and would like to donate, you may leave your donations in front of St. Joseph's altar in church any time through Memorial Day weekend, or drop them off at the rectory during the week during regu-lar business hours. We thank you in advance for your support. And speaking of food, our parish pantry can use Parmalat, Hershey's, or similar shelf-stable carton milk; 100% fruit juice; cookies/crackers; cake/cookie/brownie mix & icing. Thank you!!

Prayer Group will Not meet this Monday, May 16th at 7 PM in the chaplaincy center. Thank You!

We're looking for a few good Catholic men. We meet every 1st and 3rd Wednesday at 7:30PM at the St. An-thony’s School Library. If you are interested in joining the Knight's please contact Kevin Duffy at 201-956-3272. The Knights of Columbus, and the Holy Name Society are two long-time organizations for men in our parish. Both groups are in need of rejuvenation. Both groups have long played an active role in many aspects of the life of our parish, often providing muscle and money for many different projects of outreach efforts. But in order to continue to participate at that level, they need the energy and the talents of a new generation of Catholic men. The history of the Knights of Columbus, has been a long and glorious chapter in the life of the American Church and the Universal Church.
