    Sylvain Laporte | Canadian Space Agency Sylvain Laporte was appointed President of the Canadian Space Agency in March 2015. Prior to this appointment, he was Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO), Commissioner of Patents, Registrar of Trade-Marks since 2011. Sylvain joined Industry Canada in March 2007 as the Chief Informatics Officer (CIO). Sylvain gained extensive experience as an Aerospace Engineer over the course of his 20 year career with the Canadian Forces. He held various positions in such fields as engineering, maintenance, and human resources management.

    CSA DIRECTORS GENERAL PANELISTS

    Marie-Claude Guérard | Director General, Space Science and Technology Marie-Claude Guérard has been working for the Federal Public Service for about 20 years, mainly at the Canadian Space Agency. From 2010 to 2018, she led the Canadian Space Agency's Finance Sector as Chief Financial Officer. In May 2018, she was appointed Director General of Space Science and Technology. Marie-Claude holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the Université de Sherbrooke and an accounting designation from the Order of Chartered Professional Accountants of Quebec.

    Gilles Leclerc | Director General, Space Exploration Gilles Leclerc joined the Canadian Space Agency in 1989. He gained experience as project engineer, manager and then Director in a variety of technology development, satellite communications and international space programs. Between 1997 and 2000, Mr. Leclerc was posted at the Canadian Embassy in Paris as Counsellor, Science, Technology and Space Affairs and Canada’s Delegate to the European Space Agency. He became Director General, Space Technologies, in 2004.

    Mary Preville | Director General, Policy Mary Preville joined the Canadian Space Agency in September 2016, as Director General of Policy. She strives to grow the space sector and advance space science through business development, economic analysis, international relations and program policy.

  • Eric Laliberté | Director General, Space Utilization Eric Laliberté is Director General, Space Utilization for the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). In this position, he is accountable for the overall planning, direction and general management of the Space Utilization Branch of the CSA, whose mandate is the end-to-end implementation of the Earth Observation, Satellite Communications and Space environment elements of the Canadian Space Program. Mr. Laliberté joined the CSA in 2001 where he held various positions the most recent being Director of Space Exploration Projects and Director General of Space Science and Technology.

    SCALING UP PANELISTS

    Christine Tovee (Chair) | CATx Technology Christine Tovee, an independent consultant, is the former chief technology officer of EADS NA (now Airbus Group North America), becoming the first woman appointed CTO within the EADS/Airbus Group. She has been instrumental in establishing research partnerships in the space sector.

    Cordell Grant | QEYnet Cordell Grant has been at the forefront of the small satellite industry for 15 years. At the Space Flight Lab he oversaw cutting-edge programs such as Canada’s first nanosatellite (CanX-2), the world’s smallest space telescopes (BRITE-Constellation), the first nanosatellite formation flying demonstration (CanX-4&5), the world’s first high-resolution greenhouse gas monitoring satellite (GHGSat-D), and a LEO telecom constellation pathfinder (LEOVantage).

    Daniel Schulten | MDA Daniel Schulten is MDA’s LaunchPad director based in Ottawa, ON. LaunchPad is MDA’s new initiative to accelerate and grow partnership s with innovative SMBs and Academia in Canada. Companies and academia that interested in collaborating with MDA are encouraged to contact the LaunchPad team. Prior to LaunchPad Daniel has been responsible for business development of several space programs both at MDA and Space Systems Loral (SSL) in the US. Before joining MDA in 2001, Daniel worked on the European Robotic Arm (ERA) Program for Fokker Space in the Netherlands. In 1998, Daniel attended the International Space University Summer Session in Cleveland, Ohio.

  • Stéphane Germain | GHGSat Stéphane Germain founded GHGSat in 2011 to answer a market need for consistent, high quality measurements of greenhouse gas emissions from industrial facilities worldwide. Mr. Germain has over 25 years of experience in aerospace engineering, project management, and business development. He has held senior management positions over a period of 10 years in both small and large Canadian aerospace companies. Prior to these positions, he was a consultant for several years with Bain & Company, a leading international strategy consulting firm, working for Fortune 500 companies in industries ranging from forestry to aerospace.

    Bachar Elzein | Reaction Dynamics Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technical Officer of Reaction Dynamics where he manages corporate direction and oversees the development and manufacturing efforts of launch vehicles and their propulsion systems for low cost transport to Earth orbit. Former research assistant at the multiphase and reactive flows lab at Polytechnique Montreal, he builds upon extensive experience in all aspects of propulsion systems development as well as flight demonstrator integration. His expertise includes propulsion and systems engineering. He has authored several scientific papers on a variety of topics ranging from combustion dynamics to systems engineering and has delivered lectures on the same topics, including a TEDx talk.

    COMMERCIAL LUNAR EXPLORATION PANELISTS

    Natalia Larrea Brito (Chair) | Senior Consultant, Euroconsult Natalia currently works as a Senior Consultant at Euroconsult based in Montreal (Canada). She manages research activities and consulting missions for government and private organizations. She focuses on the assessment of government programs, new technologies and the strategic analysis of industrial and commercial space markets, specializing in space exploration. She is the project manager for Euroconsult’s research report on the prospects for space exploration. Prior to joining Euroconsult, Natalia worked as systems engineer at MDA Corporation where she specialized in the design of satellite communication payloads, supporting the business development proposal team for a variety of international clients.

  • Alain Berinstain | VP Global Development, Moon Express Well known in the international space science community as an interdisciplinary scientist, strategist and communicator, Alain brings over seventeen years of experience working for the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), including roles as Director, Planetary Exploration and Space Astronomy, and Director, Science & Academic Development. For the last two years, Dr. Berinstain has been Director of Policy for Canada’s Minister of Transport, Hon. Marc Garneau, former president of the Canadian Space Agency and Canada’s first astronaut.

    John Walker | VP Lunar Surface Operations, ispace Inc. John Walker obtained an undergrad degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2005, then worked in Canada for several years as a machine designer, mainly in the railroad industry. In 2010, he attended the International Space University's summer program and then started researching space robotics in Japan. He was awarded a PhD in space robotics in 2016 and since then has led rover development at ispace, a lunar exploration company based in Tokyo. All of his research and work there to date has been to develop microrovers (less than 10kg) for lunar exploration.

    Michele Faragalli | Chief Technology Officer, Mission Control Space Services As Chief Technology Officer at Mission Control, Michele leads all technology development activities and R&D initiatives. Michele has broad engineering leadership experience, having led interdisciplinary engineering projects from concept to production across military, aeronautical and space applications. Michele’s research expertise is in robotic and planetary mobility. He is an adjunct professor in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at Carleton University.

    Erick Dupuis | Director, Space Exploration Development, Canadian Space Agency Erick Dupuis joined the Canadian Space Agency in 1992 and is currently the director of Space Exploration Development at the Canadian Space Agency. His directorate is in charge of all planetary exploration and space astronomy missions of the CSA. He has occupied a variety of positions including research engineer in robotics, manager of robotics, manager of technology planning, as well as acting director of scientific and academic development.

    Sarah Gallagher | CSA Science Advisor Dr. Sarah Gallagher's research focuses on studying growing supermassive black holes at the centres of distant galaxies and the interactions between galaxies in crowded environments. She has over 100 refereed papers that include data from 10 different space observatories, and her research has been recognized with an Ontario Early Career Researcher Award and a Western University Faculty Scholar Award. She regularly speaks to the public of all ages about black holes and other wonders of the universe.

    DEFENCE SPACE PANELISTS

    BGen Kevin Whale (Chair) | Director General, Space BGen Whale is currently the Director General & Component Commander - Space, National Defence Headquarters, Ottawa. BGen Whale's recognized achievements include a US Army Commendation for contribution to the US Army Task Force XXI program, a Commander 1 Canadian Air Division Commendation for aviation project development, a Chief of the Air Staff Commendation for Air Force strategy development, and two Chief of Defence Staff Commendations for his service during OP MOBILE and for contributions to RCAF readiness.

    LCol Catherine Marchetti | Director of Space Strategy and Plans for DG Space LCol Catherine Marchetti was born in Montreal, Quebec and graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in 1998 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Space Sciences. She obtained a Master’s degree in Atmospheric Physics from the University of Toronto a year later. After completion of her basic Aerospace Engineering course in 2000, LCol Marchetti was seconded to the Canadian Space Agency in St-Hubert, Quebec as Mission Planner for the Radarsat-1 earth observation satellite.

    Scott McLelland | Defence Research and Development Canada Dr McLelland is currently Section Head, Space and ISR Applications at the DRDC Ottawa Research Centre where he leads a team of 40 scientists and engineers conducting cutting-edge R&D for Canada’s Defence Space program. Since joining DRDC in 2009 he has also led research teams in GPS jamming and Navigation Warfare, was project manager for the Space Operations S&T program, and has extensive experience conducting international R&D with Canada’s Five-Eyes partners. He has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, and a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering, from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada.
