5 Cleaning Unplug this product from thewall outlet before cleaning. Do not useliquid or aerosol cleaners. The productshould be cleaned only as recommendedin this manual.

6 Accessories Do not use accessories notrecommended in this manual as they maybe hazardous.

7 Avoid magnetic or electric fields Do notuse the camera close to TV transmitters,portable communication devices or othersources of electric or magnetic radiation.They may cause picture interference, orpermanently damage the camera.

8 Water and Moisture Hazard of electricshock Do not use this product nearwater or in rainy/moist situations.

9 Placing or Moving Do not place on anunstable cart, stand, tripod, bracket ortable. The product may fall, causingserious injury to a child or adult, and

serious damage to theproduct.A product and cartcombination should bemoved with care. Quickstops, excessive force,and uneven surfaces maycause the product and cartcombination to overturn.

10 Power Sources The CA-570 Compact

Power Adapter should be operated onlyfrom the type of power source indicated onthe marking label. If you are not sure of thetype of power supply to your home, consultyour product dealer or local powercompany. Regarding other power sourcessuch as battery power, refer to instructionsin this manual.

11 Polarization The CA-570 CompactPower Adapter is equipped with apolarized 2-prong plug (a plug having oneblade wider than the other).The 2-prong polarized plug will fit into the

power outlet only one way. This is a safetyfeature. If you are unable to insert the plugfully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. Ifthe plug still fails to fit, contact yourelectrician to replace your obsolete outlet.Do not defeat the safety purpose of thepolarized plug.

12 Power Cord Protection Power cordsshould be routed so that they are not likelyto be walked on or pinched by items placedupon or against them. Pay particularattention to plugs and the point from whichthe cords exit the product.

13 Outdoor Antenna Grounding If anoutside antenna is connected to theproduct, be sure the antenna is groundedso as to provide some protection againstvoltage surges and built-up static charges.Section 810 of the National ElectricalCode, ANSI / NFPA No. 701984,provides information with respect to propergrounding of the mast and supportingstructure, grounding of the lead-in wire toan antenna discharge unit, size ofgrounding conductors, location of antenna

discharge unit, connection to groundingelectrodes, and requirements for thegrounding electrode. See figure 1.

14 Lightning For added protection of thisproduct during a lightning storm, or when it

is left unattended and unused for longperiods of time, disconnect it from the walloutlet and disconnect the antenna. This willprevent damage to the product due tolightning and power-line surges.

15 Overloading Do not overload wall outletsand extension cords as this can result in arisk of fire or electric shock.

16 Objects and Liquid Entry Never pushobjects of any kind into this productthrough openings as they may touch

dangerous voltage points or short out partsthat could result in a fire or electric shock.Be careful not to spill liquid of any kind ontothe product.

17 Servicing Do not attempt to service thisproduct yourself as opening or removingcovers may expose you to dangerousvoltage or other hazards. Refer allservicing to qualified service personnel.

18 Damage Requiring Service Disconnectthis product from the wall outlet and allpower sources including battery, and referservicing to qualified service personnelunder the following conditions:

a. When the power-supply cord or plug isdamaged.

b. If any liquid has been spilled onto, orobjects have fallen into, the product.

c. If the product has been exposed to rainor water.

d. If the product does not operate normallyeven if you follow the operatinginstructions. Adjust only those controlsthat are covered by the operationinstructions. Improper adjustment of

other controls may result in damage andwill often require extensive work by aqualified technician to restore theproduct to its normal operation.

e. If the product has been dropped or thecabinet has been damaged.

f. When the product exhibits a distinctchange in performance. This indicates aneed for service.

19 Replacement Parts When replacementparts are required, be sure the service

technician has used replacement parts thatare specified by Canon or that have thesame characteristics as the original part.Unauthorized substitutions may result infire, electric shock or other hazards.

20 Safety Check Upon completion of anyservice or repairs to this product, ask theservice technician to perform safety checksto determine that the product is in safeoperating order.

What is High-Definition Video?

High-definition video (HDV) allows you to recordvideo of unparalleled high quality on regularminiDV tapes. HDV is composed of 1,080horizontal lines that is more than twice thenumber of horizontal lines and approximately 4times the number of pixels in standard-definitionTV broadcasts resulting in eye-catching colorsand richly detailed video recordings.

How to play back your HDV recordings?

On a high-definition TV (HDTV) ( 67)HDV recordings will be played back in their original high quality.On standard definition TVs ( 68)HDV recordings will be down-converted to match the resolution of the TV set.

What is the Cinema Mode?

Give your recordings a cinematic look by using the [ CINE MODE]recording program ( 45). Combine this recording mode with the high-definition, 24 fps progressive frame rate [ HDV (PF24)] ( 38) to getthe enhanced effect of the 24p Cinema Mode.

About the Joystick and the Joystick Guide

The mini joystick allows you to control many of the camcorders operations and tomake selections and changes in the camcorders menus.

The functions assigned to the joystick change according to the operation mode and thecamcorders settings. Press ( )to display/hide the joystick guide to remind you of the

joysticks functions.

About the Operating Modes

The camcorders operating mode is determined by the positions of the switch and the/ switch. In the manual, indicates that a function is available in the operating

Recording reminder

The camcorder counts from 1 to 10seconds when you start recording. This ishelpful to avoid scenes that are too short.

Remaining tape

Indicates the remaining time of the tape inminutes. moves during recording.When the tape reaches its end, the displaychanges to END. When the time left is less than 15

seconds, the remaining tape time may notappear.

Depending on the type of the tape, theremaining time displayed may not becorrect. In any case, you will be able torecord on the tape the number of minutesthat appears on the videocassettes label(for example, 85 minutes).

Remaining battery charge

When starts flashing in red, replacethe battery pack with a fully charged one. When you attach an empty battery pack,the power may turn off without displaying . Depending on the conditions under whichthe camcorder and the battery pack areused, the actual battery charge may not beindicated accurately.

Number of still images available on the

memory card

Depending on the recording conditions, thenumber of still images available displayedmay not decrease even after a recordinghas been made, or may decrease by 2 stillimages at once.

Card Access Display is displayed next to the number ofimages available while the camcorder iswriting on the memory card.

Getting Started

Charging the Battery Pack

The camcorder can be powered with abattery pack or directly using the compactpower adapter. Charge the battery packbefore use.

1 Turn off the camcorder.2 Attach the battery pack to the

camcorder.Press the battery pack softly into thebattery attachment unit and slide it upuntil it clicks in place.

3 Connect the power cord to thecompact power adapter.

4 Plug the power cord into a poweroutlet.

5 Connect the compact power adapterto the camcorders DC IN terminal. The CHARGE indicator startsflashing. The indicator will stay onwhen the charging is completed. You can also use the compact poweradapter without attaching a batterypack. When the compact power adapter isconnected, even if a battery isattached its power will not beconsumed.

ONCE THE BATTERY PACK IS FULLY CHARGED

1 Disconnect the compact poweradapter from the camcorder.

2 Unplug the power cord from thepower outlet and the compactpower adapter.

TO REMOVE THE BATTERY PACK

Slide in thedirection of the arrow and hold itpressed down. Slide the battery packdown and then pull it out.

IMPORTANT

You may hear some noise from the compact

power adapter during use. This is not amalfunction.We recommend charging the battery pack intemperatures between 10 C and 30 C (50 Fand 86 F). Outside the temperature range of0 C to 40 C (32 F to 104 F), the charging willnot start.Do not connect to the camcorders DC INterminal or to the compact power adapter anyelectrical equipment that is not expresslyrecommended for use with this camcorder.

To prevent equipment breakdowns andexcessive heating, do not connect the supplied

Inserting and Removing a TapeUse only videocassettes marked with the

logo. To record in HDV standard werecommend using tapes specifically

designed for high definition.

1 Slide fully in thedirection of the arrow and open thecassette compartment cover.The cassette compartment opensautomatically.

2 Insert the cassette. Insert the cassette with the window

facing the grip belt. To remove the cassette pull it straight

out.

3 Press the mark on thecassette compartment until it clicks.

4 Wait for the cassette compartmentto retract automatically and closethe cassette compartment cover.

IMPORTANT

Do not interfere with the cassettecompartment while it is opening or closingautomatically, or attempt to close the cover

before the cassette compartment has fullyretracted.Be careful not to get your fingers caught inthe cassette compartment cover.

NOTES

If the camcorder is connected to a powersource, cassettes can be inserted/removedeven if the switch is set to .

Inserting and Removing a Memory Card

Use only commercially available miniSDcards.

1 Turn off the camcorder.2 Open the LCD panel.3 Open the memory card slot cover.4 Insert the memory card straight with

the miniSD label facing up, all theway into the memory card slot untilit clicks.

5 Close the cover.Do not force the cover closed if thememory card is not correctly inserted.

IMPORTANT

Make sure to initialize all memory cardsbefore using them with this camcorder for thefirst time ( 65).

Memory cards have front and back sides thatare not interchangeable. Inserting a memorycard facing the wrong direction can cause amalfunction of the camcorder.

NOTES

Proper operation cannot be guaranteed for allminiSD cards.

Preparing the Camcorder

1 Turn on the camcorder.The lens cover will open automatically.

2 Adjust the viewfinder.Keep the LCD panel closed to use theviewfinder and adjust the dioptricadjustment lever as necessary.

3 Fasten the grip belt.Adjust the grip belt so that you canreach the zoom lever with your index

finger, and the START/STOP buttonwith your thumb.

Adjusting the LCD Screen

Rotating the LCD Panel

Open the LCD panel 90 degrees.You can rotate the panel 90 degreesdownward.

You can rotate the panel 180 degreestoward the lens (allowing the subject tomonitor the LCD screen while you use theviewfinder). Rotating the panel 180degrees is also useful if you wish toinclude yourself when recording with theself timer.

LCD Backlight

You can set the brightness of the LCDscreen to normal or bright.

Hold pressed down for morethan 2 seconds.Repeat this action to toggle between thenormal and bright settings.

NOTES

This setting does not affect the brightness ofthe recording or the viewfinder screen.Using the bright setting will shorten theeffective usage time of the battery pack.You can also adjust the brightness of the LCDfrom the menu ( 43).

become distorted or it may not be recorded atthe actual levels. This is not a malfunction.About the Power Save mode: To save powerwhen the camcorder is powered by a batterypack, the camcorder will automatically shut off if

left without any operations for 5 minutes( 44). To restore the power, turn thecamcorder off and then on again.About the LCD and viewfinder screen: Thescreens are produced using extremely high-precision manufacturing techniques, with morethan 99.99% of the pixels operating tospecification. Less than 0.01% of the pixelsmay occasionally misfire or appear as black,red, blue or green dots. This has no effect onthe recorded image and does not constitute a

malfunction.When using a tripod: Do notleave the viewfinder exposed todirect sunlight as it may melt(due to concentration of the lightby the lens). Do not use tripodswith fastening screws longerthan 5.5 mm (0.2 in.). Doing somay damage the camcorder.When recording movies, try to get a calm, stablepicture.

Excessive camcorder movement while shootingand extensive use of fast zooms and panningcan result in jittery scenes. In extreme cases,the playback of such scenes may result invisually induced motion sickness. If youexperience such a reaction, immediately stopthe playback and take a rest break asnecessary.

Recording Still Images

You can also change the zoom speed( 37). You can select one of three fixedzoom speeds or a variable speed thatdepends on how you operate the zoomlever: Press gently for a slow zoom; pressharder for faster zooms.

NOTES

You can also use the Tand Wbuttons on the

wireless controller or the LCD panel. The zoomspeed with these buttons will be the same aswith the camcorder (when one of the fixed zoomspeed levels is selected) or fixed at[ SPEED 3] (when [ VARIABLE] isselected).When set to [ VARIABLE], the zoomspeed will be faster in the record pause mode.Keep at least 1 m (3.3 ft.) away from thesubject. At wide-angle, you can focus on asubject as close as 1 cm (0.39 in.).

Adjusting the Volume: Speaker and

HeadphonesThe camcorder plays the sound with thebuilt-in speaker. When youre using theviewfinder for playback, you can connecta pair of headphones to listen to thesound. You can also use the headphonesto check the audio level while recording.

TO ADJUST THE VOLUME OF THE HEADPHONES

In mode, adjust the volume ofthe headphones with the [PHONES VOL.]setting ( 41). In mode, usethe joystick and the joystick guidefollowing the same procedure as whenadjusting the speakers volume.

IMPORTANT

Do not connect the headphones to the AV/

terminal if the icon does not appear on thescreen. If you connect the headphones whilethe terminal is set to AV output only noise willbe output.When using headphones, make sure to lowerthe volume to an appropriate level.The sound of the built-in speaker will bemuted when you close the LCD panel, whenyou connect the stereo video cable to the

AV/ terminal or when the AV/ terminal isset to [ PHONES].

NOTES

Use commercially available headphones witha 3.5 mm minijack.When you turn off the camcorder, the[AV/PHONES] setting in mode willreturn to [ AV].The volume of the headphones cannot beadjusted while recording.

Returning to a Pre-marked Position

If you wish to return to a particular scenelater, mark the point with the zero setmemory and the tape will stop at thatpoint when you rewind/fast forward thetape.

1 While recording or during playback,press on thewireless controller at the point youwish to return to later.

The time code changes to0:00:00 . Press again tocancel the memory.

2 If you marked the zero memorywhile recording, set the camcorderto mode. If you markedthe zero memory during playback,press .

3 Press to locate the zero mark. If the tape counter shows a negativenumber, press instead. appears and the camcorderrewinds/fast forwards the tape. The tape stops at or near the zeromark, disappears and the correcttime code will be displayed again.

NOTES

Locating the End of the Last Scene

After playing back a tape, use thisfunction to locate the end of the lastscene recorded in order to continuerecording from that point.

CAMERA SETUP

Mode switch: or P(only in the[ PROGRAM AE] recording program)[ ON], [ OFF]The camcorder automatically uses slowshutter speeds to obtain brighter

recordings in places with insufficientlighting.The camcorder uses shutter speedsdown to 1/30 (1/15 in mode,1/12 in with cinema effect[ HDV (PF24)]). : Set the flash mode to(flash off).If a trailing afterimage appears, set theslow shutter to [ OFF].If (camcorder shake warning)appears, we recommend stabilizing thecamcorder, for example, by mounting iton a tripod.

[ OFF], [ 40X], [ 200X]Determines the operation of the digitalzoom.When activated, the camcorder willswitch automatically to the digital zoomwhen you zoom in beyond the opticalzoom range.With the digital zoom the image isdigitally processed, so the imageresolution will deteriorate the more you

zoom in.

The digital zoom indicator will appear inlight blue from 10x up to 40x and darkblue from 40x up to 200x.The digital zoom cannot be used withthe [ NIGHT] recording program.

A still image cannot be recordedsimultaneously on the memory card whilerecording movies using the digital zoom.

[ VARIABLE], [ SPEED 3],[ SPEED 2], [ SPEED 1]When set to [ VARIABLE] the zoomspeed depends on how you operate thezoom lever: Press lightly for a slow zoom;press harder for faster zooms.The fastest zoom speed can beachieved with [ VARIABLE]. Amongthe fixed zoom speeds, [ SPEED 3] isthe fastest and [ SPEED 1] theslowest.

[ INSTANT AF], [ NORMAL AF]Select how fast the autofocus willoperate.With [ INSTANT AF] the autofocusadjusts quickly to a new subject. This isconvenient for example when changingthe focus from a near subject to a farsubject in the background, or whenrecording fast moving subjects.When the optional Wide-converter orTele-converter is attached to thecamcorder, it may partially obstruct theInstant AF sensor. Set the AF mode to[ NORMAL AF].

[ STD PLAY], [ LONG PLAY]When [HD STANDARD] is set to one ofthe DV standards, you can change thevideo quality and as a result, also therecording time available on the tape.Recording in LP mode extends theavailable recording time on the tape 1.5times.Depending on the condition of the tape(long usage, imperfections, etc.) you may

notice some video problems (blocky videoartifacts, banding, etc.) in the playbackpicture when playing back recordingsmade in LP mode. We recommend usingthe SP mode for important recordings.If you make recordings in both SP andLP modes on the same tape, duringplayback you may notice some videoproblems in the picture at the point where

the recording mode changes.When playing back in this camcordertapes recorded in LP mode with otherdevices or vice versa, you may noticesome problems in the playback picture orthe sound may stop briefly.

Adjust ( ) the brightness of the LCDdisplay with the joystick.Changing the brightness of the LCDdisplay does not affect that of theviewfinder or the recordings.

[ NIGHT]- Moving subjects may leave a trailingafterimage.- Picture quality may not be as good as in othermodes.

- White points may appear on the screen.- Autofocus may not work as well as in othermodes. In such case, adjust the focus manually.

[ SNOW]/[ BEACH]- The subject may become overexposed oncloudy days or in shaded places. Check theimage on the screen.

[ FIREWORKS]- To avoid camcorder shake, we recommendusing a tripod. Make sure to use a tripodespecially in , as the shutter speedslows down.

Adjusting the Picture: Exposure, Focus and Color

Manual Exposure Adjustment andAutomatic Backlight Correction

At times, backlit subjects may appear toodark (underexposed) or subjects undervery strong lights may appear too brightor glaring (overexposed). To correct thisyou can use the automatic backlightcorrection or manually adjust theexposure.

Automatic Backlight Correction

When shooting subjects with a stronglight source behind them, you can havethe camcorder automatically correct forthe backlight with the press of a singlebutton.

Press . appears. Press again to end the backlightcorrection mode.

2 Push the joystick ( ) toward [EXP]. If [EXP] does not appear on the

joystick guide, repeatedly push thejoystick ( ) toward [NEXT] to display

the joystick guide in the illustrationabove. The exposure adjustment indicator

and the neutral value 0appear on the screen. If you operate the zoom while theexposure is locked, the brightness ofthe image may change.

3 Adjust ( ) the brightness of theimage as required. The adjustment range and the lengthof the exposure adjustment indicatorwill vary depending on the initialbrightness of the picture. Pushing the joystick ( ) toward[EXP] again will return the camcorderto automatic exposure.

Manual Focus Adjustment

Autofocus may not work well on thefollowing subjects. In such case, focusmanually.

TO SET THE CUSTOM WHITE BALANCE

1 Point the camcorder at a whiteobject, zoom in until it fills thewhole screen and press ( ).When the adjustment is completedstops flashing and stays on. Thecamcorder retains the custom settingeven if you turn off the camcorder.

2 Press to save the setting andclose the menu.

NOTES

When you select the custom white balance[ SET]:- Make the white balance adjustment in a place

with sufficient light.- Set [D.ZOOM] to [ OFF] ( 37).- Readjust the white balance if the lightingconditions change.- Very rarely and depending on the light source,

may keep on flashing instead of staying on.Even in that case, the white balance would beproperly adjusted and the results should bebetter than with [ AUTO].Custom white balance may provide betterresults in the following cases:- Changing lighting conditions- Close-ups- Subjects in a single color (sky, sea or forest)- Under mercury lamps and certain types offluorescent lightsDepending on the type of fluorescent light,optimal color balance may not be obtained with[ FLUORESCENT] or [ FLUORESCENTH]. If the color looks unnatural, adjust it using[ AUTO] or [ SET].

Capturing a Still Image while Recording

Movies

You can record still images on the

memory card even while the camcorder isset to mode. You can alsocapture simultaneously, as a still imageon the memory card, the same pictureyou are recording as video on the tape.The size and quality of the still image canbe selected.
