Excellent Colloque! Le comité organisateur : Armand Soldera, Robert Gauvin et Patricia Basque

From Fibrous Biological Tissues to Adaptable Hydrogel Materials
Prof. Eugenia Kumacheva
Department of Chemistry, University of Toronto 80 St. George Street, Room LM 627 Toronto, Ontario , M5S 3H6, CANADA
Plants possess a unique ability to adapt their shape to the changing ambient environment. Shape transformations are governed by the non-‐uniform accumulation of elastic energy and the release of localized stresses in plant tissue. The self-‐shaping behaviour of plants offers a useful paradigm for creating adaptable, actuating soft matter materials by-‐design, however currently, complex 3D shape transformations in soft matter are challenging and are limited mostly to simple folding or buckling. Being inspired by the remarkable structure-‐property relations in fibrous tissues of plants, we developed a nature-‐inspired strategy for the generation of complex 3D structures by stimuli-‐responsive composite hydrogels. In comparison with earlier works, large-‐scale shape transitions were achieved by utilizing small-‐scale fiber-‐like modulations in composition and structure of planar hydrogel sheets. A combination of different materials and stimuli was used to program well-‐defined shape transitions. Furthermore, small-‐scale features allowed us to "program" multiple stable shapes, each realized under a specific stimulus. This work constitutes a major step towards the preprogrammed design of adaptable soft materials with applications in sensing and actuation.
Eugenia Kumacheva is a University Professor at the University of Toronto, with a major appointment in the Department of Chemistry and cross-‐appointments in the Department of Chemical Engineering andn the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering (IBBME). Her main specialty is the physical chemistry and materials science of soft matter, with the focus on polymers, nanoscience and microfluidics.

A Scalable Source of Pure Semiconducting Carbon Nanotubes for Sensors and Transistors.
Dr. Jens Kroeger
Directeur de la technologie, Raymor Nanotech, Boisbriand, Qc
The advancement of nanotube-‐based transistor technology is crucial to enable radiation hardened memory and logic beyond the limits of, and complementary to, silicon, but also a p-‐type complement to Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide (IGZO), an n-‐type channel material for high mobility solution processable transistors. Semiconducting single-‐wall carbon nanotubes (SC-‐SWCNT) enable network TFTs with high mobility (> 40 cm2/V-‐s), high current density (1-‐10 μA/μm) and excellent current ON/OFF ratios (up to 107 via solution processing). Until now, there was no clear route to a scalable source of high purity (>99%) semiconducting single-‐wall carbon nanotubes, preventing SWCNT-‐based transistor applications from being commercialized. As part of the Printable Electronics Consortium coordinated by the National Research Council of Canada (NRCC), Raymor and NRCC have developed a scalable process for the purification and separation of SC-‐SWCNTs, using Raymor’s plasma torch derived SWCNT material. The project has been highly successful, yielding a new product, IsoSol-‐S100, the highest purity semiconducting nanotube ink (99.9% pure) to be offered commercially today, which also has many other formulation attributes sought by researchers and product developers world-‐wide Bio Jens Kroeger is the director of technology (CTO) for Raymor Industries Inc. After undergraduate studies in physics at Laval University, he obtained a Masters and then a Doctorate degree at McGill University, on the topic of biophysics and more specifically the mechanical and biochemical regulation of plant cell growth. After an appointment as professor of science at the CÉGEP du Vieux Montreal, he joined Raymor Industries as an NSERC industrial postdoctoral fellow. Since then, he has installed and developed Raymor's RF plasma technology for the large scale synthesis of single-‐wall carbon nanotubes. He also has assisted in the development and licensing of a scalable technology for the separation of semiconducting single-‐wall carbon nanotubes using a polymer-‐wrapping method.

Theory of Polymer Electrolyte Membranes: Cradle to Grave
Prof. Michael Eikerling
Department of Chemistry, Simon Fraser University 8888 University Drive, Burnaby, BC, V5A1S6, Canada
meikerl@sfu.ca Polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) play a key role as separator and proton transport media in electrochemical energy technologies, most prominently in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). The currently prevailing class of membranes requires sufficient hydration for efficient proton conduction. The self-‐organized structure of the membrane, formed from comb-‐shaped ionomers with charged sidechains, dictates its water sorption behavior, transports properties, durability and lifetime. In spite of decades of research, this structure has remained controversial. The presentation will give a systematic account of our recent forays in theoretical membrane science, focusing on a theory of ionomer bundle formation, a theory of water sorption and swelling in elastic porous media with charged walls, a theory of bundle breakage and fracture propagation, and studies of proton motion at acid-‐functionalized interfaces using molecular modeling and soliton theory. Bio Michael Eikerling is a Professor of theoretical chemical physics and electrochemical materials science at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. He received his Diploma in theoretical condensed matter physics from RWTH Aachen (Germany) in 1995 and his doctoral degree from the Technical University of Munich in 1999 for a dissertation on theoretical chemical physics of polymer electrolyte fuel cells. Prior to joining Simon Fraser University in 2003, Michael Eikerling spent periods as a research associate at Research Center Jülich, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and TU München. Research interests in the Eikerling-‐group encompass a wide spectrum of fundamental and applied topics, from transport phenomena at interfaces and in polymeric materials, theory and modeling of electrocatalytic phenomena, self-‐organization in electrochemical materials, statistical physics of heterogeneous media, porous electrode theory, advanced electrochemcal diagnostics to fuel cell design and performance modeling. The group has expertise in molecular modeling, physical theory, and continuum modeling. It interacts extensively with experimental groups in academia and industry. Michael Eikerling has published more than 80 articles in peer-‐reviewed journals. His book “Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells: Physical Principles of Materials and Operation” (co-‐authored with A. Kulikovsky) was published in Sep. 2014. In addition to leadership and executive roles in Pan-‐Canadian and international research networks, he engages strongly in activities of the international scientific community.

Achieving Superior GPC Results Through Column Selection
Michael Kruger
Application Engineer, Agilent Technologies Longmeadow, Massachusetts, USA
Gel Permeation Chromatography / Size Exclusion Chromatography is highly valuable technique in the discipline of Material Science. Through GPC/SEC many properties of an analyte can be uncovered including Molecular Weight, Molecular Size, Structure and perhaps even most important the overall Distribution. The technique of Gel Permeation Chromatography is conceptually simple: It is a separation based on size where no enthalpic interactions are observed. In Practice, GPC can feel much more cumbersome yielding involved method development and data that can be difficult to interpret. Though GPC can seem mystifying at times, 90% of success is achieved by using the proper columns for your application. During this seminar we will discuss what is new in GPC column technology, different types of stationary phases and how to choosing the best columns can yield: 1) Improved resolution 2) Improved reproducibility 3) Improved accuracy 4) Improved analysis time The goal of the seminar is to illustrate how proper GPC column selection can make the difference between good and great chromatography. Bio Mike Kruger has a degree in Bio-‐Chemistry from the University of Vermont. He began his career in GPC with Polymer Laboratories in 2001as an Applications Scientist. Since that time, Mike has filled many roles including Applications Lab Manager and Field Sales Representative focusing on GPC Instrumentation and consumables. Currently He is an Applications Engineer providing customer assistance with method development and technical support in the chemical, material science and biotechnology industries. Mike lives in Western Massachusetts and when he is not visiting customers enjoys spending time with his wife of 14 years,Kate, and his son Konstantin.
