AAAS is here – promoting universal science literacy.
In 1985, AAAS founded Project 2061 with the goal of helping all Americans become literate in science, mathematics, and
technology. With its landmark publications Science for All Americans and Benchmarks for Science Literacy, Project 2061 set out
recommendations for what all students should know and be able to do in science, mathematics, and technology by the time they
graduate from high school. Today, many of the state standards in the United States have drawn their content from Project 2061.
Every day Project 2061 staff use their expertise as teachers, researchers, and scientists to evaluate textbooks and assessments,
create conceptual strand maps for educators, produce groundbreaking research and innovative books, CD-ROMs, and profes-
sional development workshops for educators, all in the service of achieving our goal of universal science literacy.
As a AAAS member, your dues help support Project 2061 as it works to improve science education. If you are not yet a AAAS
member, join us. Together we can make a difference.

IMAGING SOFTWAREThe cellSens software for life science imaging applications is avail-
able in three different packages designed to meet various user
requirements. The software’s user-defi nable interface allows the
imaging process to be personalized from start to fi nish, for com-
plete control over the entire experiment. Each package integrates
seamlessly with Microsoft Windows and other Offi ce programs.
The cellSens Entry program provides the ability to perform simple
image acquisition and documentation for basic image capture. The
cellSens Standard software enables more advanced image capture,
including time-lapse TWAIN acquisition. It offers the ability to motor-
ize processes such as objective and fi lter changes, focusing, and
internal shutter control. The cellSens Dimension supports the control
and processing requirements for microscope-based experimental
systems, providing a broad range of advanced features as well as
optional specialized modules.

WORKFLOW MODULEThe QIAsymphony AS module extends the capabilities of the QIA-
symphony SP sample purifi cation system and simplifi es routine work
processes through easy-to-use, intuitive software. The new module
provides fully automated setup of Qiagen assays and polymerase
chain reaction (PCR) kits. It addresses the complexity of laboratory
processes and logistics of PCR assay setup in a straightforward
way while maintaining the high performance of Qiagen real-time
and end-point PCR kits and PCR assays. Samples processed on the
QIAsymphony SP can be automatically transferred to the QIAsym-
phony AS, which reduces manual handling steps and documentation
requirements.

LIQUID HANDLING WORKSTATIONThe Nimbus iProbe compact liquid handling workstation features up to four
independent channels that can be confi gured with any combination of 1-ml or 5-ml
pipetting heads. The new instrument provides fl exible pipetting choices to and from
microplates or tubes in volumes from 1 µl to 5,000 µl. It performs a wide range of
liquid handling steps such as tube-to-tube, tube-to-plate, and plate-to-plate transfers,
including pipetting from nonstandard labware. The fl exibility offered by independently
spaced channels is particularly suitable for hit picking and sample preparation from
tubes. The 5-ml capability enhances high-volume applications such as vacuum-based
solid-phase extraction. The Nimbus iProbe includes an intuitive graphical interface that
facilitates programming.

BLUE FLUORESCENT PROTEINA monomeric blue fl uorescent protein with high photostability and
pH stability is available. For use in protein labeling and organelle la-
beling, the TagBFP’s narrow fl uorescence emission peak makes it
suitable for multicolor imaging. TagBFP features bright blue fl uores-
cence with excitation and emission maxima at 402 nm and 457 nm.
It offers a relatively short maturation half-time at 37°C. TagBFP can
be expressed and detected in a wide range of organisms. Mam-
malian cells transiently transfected with TagBFP expression vectors
give bright fl uorescence within 10 to 12 hours and show no cytotoxic
effects or protein aggregation. The protein’s performance in fusions
has also been demonstrated in the β-actin and α-tubulin models.

STAUDINGER CHEMISTRY REAGENTSA new line of Staudinger Ligation Reagents for in vivo and in vitro
labeling of biomolecules features Staudinger chemistry, which
relies on an azide-phosphine conjugation that works well in live-cell
labeling and mass spectrometry applications. It is particularly useful
in the study of protein glycosylation. It features a high degree of
chemoselectivity, which eliminates off-target ligations with other
biomolecules. The Staudinger ligation reactions are performed
in aqueous solutions at physiological pH without side reactions
with buffers and detergents. Azido-labeled biomolecules can be
incorporated into a protein metabolically and detected with a variety
of phosphine probes, including Thermo Scientifi c DyLight Fluorescent
Dye–based probes. These reagents offer an alternative that is
nontoxic to biological systems because there is no biomolecule
oxidation.
