CEO’sMessageMessage de la directrice générale

LIKE THE SWIRLING AUTUMN WINDS THAT SERVE AS A prelude to winter, the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) has been a whirlwind of activity over the past three months.

This has been our busiest event season. We hosted several Distinguished Speaker Series luncheons featuring an array of dynamic speakers include retired General Rick Hillier (thanks to sponsor TD Canada Trust), Treasury Board president Roger Melanson, and BDC chief economist Pierre Cleroux.

We held special information sessions with National Revenue Minister Diane Lebouthillier, who spoke to local business about ways the Canada Revenue Agency can better serve them. We also hosted an information session on our exciting Chamber members’ trip to China in April 2017.

And, we held our biggest event of the year: the 31st annual GMCC Business Excellence Awards. This was an historic year for the Chamber and for the Awards; The GMCC celebrates its 125th anniversary, and the Awards received a record 140 nominations and a record 450 people attended the gala. Read all about the 30 finalists and winners in 11 categories in our cover story on page 16.

This is an appropriate time, after a hectic few months, to catch our breath and look back on the successes of 2016 and ahead to the challenges and opportunities of 2017.

Greater Moncton is thriving economically. Several economic indicators show the vitality of our business community: a record number of building permits in the tri-communities, low unemployment, high levels of entrepreneurship, business confidence and investment. It’s little wonder we saw more construction cranes on the skyline this year than in any year in recent memory.

Your Chamber also had a successful 2016. Our membership is growing, we increased our advocacy efforts, and hosted more events that touched more people. That certainly doesn’t mean we can rest on our laurels.

The GMCC board of directors engaged XYZ Stratégie Communications to help draft a new strategic plan for the organization. This effort continued throughout the fall, involving board members, staff, and individual GMCC members.

We are about to put the finishing touches on the strategic plan, which will guide the Chamber’s efforts in 2017 and for the next three to five years. At the heart of the plan will be better communication, both internally, to members, and externally, to the tri-community and province.

We are on the right track at the Chamber, but we also know we can raise the bar to become even more efficient and effective, and raise your level of engagement.

Our strategy will focus on making the GMCC Atlantic Canada’s best chamber. We strive to be the best at communicating, advocating for our members, connecting our members, and growing individual businesses and our region’s economy.

None of this exciting work will be possible, of course, without the active participation of our members. We will reach out to you to become even more involved in Chamber activities, issues, and programs in 2017.

Like those brisk autumn winds that signal an end to the season, we see this time of year as a chance to recharge, renew, and get ready for the many new growth opportunities the new year will bring. f

Carol O’Reilly, CEOGreater Moncton Chamber of Commerce

Long-time GMCC member Malley Industries is pushing further into the American market with a sleek new ambulance.

The Ford Transit ambulance was unveiled this fall and displayed at the 2016 AAA Conference and Trade Show in Las Vegas. Malley, based in Dieppe, is well-known for supplying the Ambulance New Brunswick fleet, among others.

The new model is a lighter, safer, and more ergonomic take on the traditional ambulance.

Malley Industries CEO Terry Malley says the response to the new ambulance is great, with a waiting list of potential dealers.

The company expects to sell 50 to 60 vehicles in the first year on the market, with the majority of those sales based in the U.S.

Ambulance Association Conference and Trade Show à Las

Vegas.

We’re already seeing changes in the downtown core as a result of Moncton’s new Downtown Centre. Work started this fall on a new development at the corner of Main Street and Vaughan Harvey Boulevard.

The Junction Project will see six buildings developed over the next four years. Westmount Developments is building the project, which is expected to reach $100 million in investment. The company’s president, Vaughn MacLellan, now lives in Toronto but grew up in Moncton.

The concept of The Junction is to create an urban village where people will live, work, and play. It will include a high-end apartment building, fitness club, retail and office space on the ground level, and a new Hilton hotel.

MacLellan purchased the 4.4-hectare property over two years ago, while the city was still negotiating financing for the Downtown Centre.

The Junction

Ellsworth Johnson & Partners, a long-standing Moncton law firm and GMCC member, celebrated its 100th anniversary by rededicating its home on Main Street.

The firm took over the old Moncton Transcript building at the corner of Westmorland Street nearly 20 years ago and painstakingly restored the structure to its former glory. Built in 1900, the building served as the newspaper’s home until 1960 when its current home was built.

The celebration included a champagne toast and guided tours of the historic property. A highlight of the event was Moncton actor Ed McNamara’s appearance. He performed as famous Moncton Transcript publisher John T. Hawke, delivering a light-hearted but fiery speech in the style of 1916 from the sidewalk next to the building.

D.P. Murphy Hotels & Resorts continues to increase its footprint in the Greater Moncton area.

In October, the P.E.I.-based company added the Quality Inn Airport in Dieppe. This 84-room property became the third hospitality property in the Moncton market owned by D.P. Murphy.

Also this fall, the company bought the 82-room Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott located on Marriott Drive in the city’s east end.

“The purchase of the Fairfield will put us in the enviable position of having the largest inventory of hotel rooms and meeting space in the city which will serve us well as Moncton continues to develop the Downtown Centre and attract more and more business and leisure travellers to the area,” the company said in a release.

Owner Danny Murphy plans to break ground soon on his fifth Moncton area-hotel, a new Holiday Inn location off Mapleton Road near the Trans-Canada Highway. By the close of 2017, D.P. Murphy Hotels and Resorts will have five hotels serving the Moncton area.

The company isn’t limiting its growth to hotels. At press time, D.P. Murphy Inc. was in the final stages of purchasing The Keg Steakhouse + Bar, located on Main Street in the heart of downtown.

THE GREATER MONCTON CHAMBER of Commerce (GMCC) board of directors is busy working on a strategic plan for the organization this fall.

The board hired XYZ Stratégie Communications to lead the exercise, which involved GMCC staff and individual Chamber members. XYZ

partners David Hawkins and Brian Jamieson led a series of meetings with stakeholders.

The new strategy is expected to be complete by the end of the year, with timelines, action items, and metrics. It will become the roadmap for the GMCC in 2017 and for the next three to five years.

The plan will look at all areas of the Chamber’s work, including events and networking opportunities, membership, communication, and advocacy. The working groups also worked on redefining the mission and vision for the Chamber. f

Tips from EY to help you prepare for CPP changes BY KIM HART MACNEILL

CANADA’S FINANCE MINISTERS reached a long-promised agreement to beef up the Canada Pension Plan in October. The changes kick in on Jan. 1, 2019, and CPP contribution percentages will increase gradually through 2025. That may seem a long way off, but now is the time for small- and mid-sized business owners to start thinking about how this will affect their businesses, says Pauline Vautour, senior manager tax services for EY in Dieppe.

Employers and employees currently contribute 4.95 per cent each. Starting in 2019, that rate will increase 0.15 per cent, and will continue to increase annually until it reaches 5.95 per cent in 2023.

“For the first five years it’s not going to be that big an increase, but one per cent can make a big difference,” says Vautour. “And it’s the years after that where we could see the big jump in cost.”

Currently, the pensionable earnings maximum is set at $54,900, meaning that people earning more don’t contribute above that amount. In 2024 that amount will rise to $70,100, and both employers and employees will contribute an

additional four per cent (on top of the one per cent increase). In 2025, the maximum will grow to $72,900.

“Net cash-wise your employee is going to receive less money,” she says. “Especially those on the border [between $70,100 and $72,900].”

But you can minimize the increased costs, Vautour says, especially on a business owner’s own wages.

One option is to pay owners dividends in lieu of salary to top-up pay to those contribution maximums without incurring the four-per-cent increase. Businesses owners can also consider making employees who are family members shareholders to pay them dividends too.

“For some shareholders it may work out very well, and for others may choose to pay into CPP at higher rates because they at the end might end up receiving more in benefits upon retirement,” says Vautour.

She suggests discussing your corporate structure with a financial adviser now to look for changes you can make to lower your employment expenses come 2019.

Vautour also recommends investigating alternative remuneration options. “Most benefits are subject to CPP deductions," she says, "but contributions to employee profit sharing plans and retirement allowances are some benefits that are not subject to CPP deductions.”

Another option: pay performance bonuses before Dec. 31 to pay the lower CPP rate of the current year rather than the new Jan. 1 rate.

Additionally, think about how increased CPP contributions will affect employees’ take-home pay. Many will see a decrease in take home pay as contributions rise.

“In some industries there’s a lot of competition trying to keep employees,” says Vautour. “It may cost them in that way as well.” Start working on your employee-retention strategies now to increase employee loyalty and look for non-financial retention opportunities.”

Regardless of your plan to approach these changes, says Vautour, now is the time to start planning for the future to ensure you’re in a solid position when the increases start. f

NOUVELLES EXCLUSIVES

THE GREATER MONCTON BUSINESS COMMUNITY celebrated its best at the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) 2016 Business Excellence Awards on Oct. 26. More than 450 people packed the ballroom at the Delta Beauséjour Hotel for the awards gala, honouring a broad cross-section of the region’s business community across 11 award categories.

“There is so much positive energy and confidence now among Greater Moncton’s businesses, this was a great moment to celebrate that optimism,” says GMCC CEO Carol O’Reilly.

The GMCC received nearly 140 nominations, a record for the awards. Close to 60 companies accepted the nominations (also a record), and the sold-out event also set an attendance record.

GMCC board chair Mathieu LeBlanc says Greater Moncton always has the power to choose how to tell its story.

“As a Chamber, I believe we have an important role to play in this regard, which is why we put so much focus and energy on sharing and celebrating our members’ success.”

“When the tide rises, it lifts all boats and by truly working together – whether it’s the residents of the tri-community, local businesses, other local organizations or the various levels of government – we all come out on top,” LeBlanc added.

Once again this year, the People’s Choice Award, voted on by the public, drew a huge response with close to 10,000 votes cast via the Chamber’s website.

The Greater Moncton Romeo LeBlanc International Airport celebrates 20 years as a non-profit corporation in 2017. The airport achieved tremendous growth in those two decades: transforming an initial $2 million annual financial shortfall into a net surplus of more than $2 million, increasing annual passenger traffic from 200,000 to more than 640,000, and 70-some dedicated cargo flights departing each week.

This explosive growth allowed the airport to invest in a new terminal building, an extended runway, and a new operations facility. Today, GMIA is the dominant airport in New Brunswick for passengers and cargo traffic.

In 2007, Guyerson Vernous and his wife left the instability of Haiti, and eventually moved to Moncton. Eight years ago, he started iCubemedia, a mobile software development company that produces productivity apps for small- and medium-sized enterprises sold on the Apple’s App Store. In 2013, iCubemedia increased its revenue 500 per cent.

Such rapid growth challenged the company to find skilled developers in New Brunswick. In response to this challenge, Vernous launched a Moncton education centre offering practical training in computer science and computer techniques. Additionally, iCubemedia created Educode Canada Inc. to teach computer programming to children in 10 Greater Moncton-area schools.

A warm welcomeUn accueil chaleureuxIMMIGRANTS ARE KEY TO GREATER MONCTON’S ECONOMIC FUTURE LES IMMIGRANTS SONT ESSENTIELS À L'AVENIR ÉCONOMIQUE DU GRAND MONCTON

BY/PAR KEN KELLEY

IN 2012, THE CITY OF MONCTON REALIZED IT WOULD need to add more than 1,000 new immigrants per year through 2017 in order to achieve a moderate rate of population growth.

The scene was the city’s first ever Greater Moncton Immigration Summit, which attracted more than 200 people from the immigrant community, business leaders, government settlement agencies, and other partners eager to help solve this challenge.

Angelique Reddy-Kalala, the City of Moncton’s immigration strategy officer, says the city has done an excellent job in attracting and retaining immigrants thus far.

“In 2014, the city welcomed 810 immigrants, while the following year, we saw an increase to 845,” Reddy-Kalala says, noting that those figures do not include additional family members, meaning the final numbers are probably much larger.

The city started a number of initiatives to hit its immigration targets. One of the most effective is the creation of sector-specific employment fairs for newcomers and international students.

“The fairs have garnered national attention and have filled 84 positions as a direct result,” she says. Targeted sectors included IT, ICT, animation, trucking and logistics, business centres, and customer service.

One of those international students is Alex Mondésir, a Haiti native currently studying management at the Université de Moncton. He started working part-time at a local Sobeys to earn extra income during school.

While working at the grocery store, he met the manager of one of the city’s National Bank branches. Before long, they talked about Mondésir’s career aspirations.

“He took the time to really listen closely to what I was sharing with him and encouraged me to provide him a copy of my resumé,” Mondésir says. “A short while later, he contacted me to let me know that the bank had a customer service position open which he felt I would be well-suited for and encouraged me to apply.”

Mondésir landed the job about six months ago. He credits the bank with helping him establish a balance between school and work, which ultimately helps ensure his all-around success.

“I love the work I do and would definitely recommend other immigrants take the time and opportunity to put yourself out there when it comes to job seeking,” he says.

Kathy Malley, vice-president of Dieppe-based Malley Industries, says the “can do” attitudes of employees like Mondésir played a significant role in her company’s decision to hire upwards of 20 per cent of its total staff from the immigrant workforce.

“We use it as an opportunity to find people with the skills that seem to be a little harder to come by,” Malley says. She says trade tech capabilities, vehicle electronics, and cabinet making are just a few examples of the specialty skills they’ve found through hiring newcomers.

“Our focus has always been finding the right people for the job,” she says. “Malley has consistently taken an open approach to hiring and currently have staff from the U.K., France, Algeria, Syria, and Germany working with us. Not only have we found that they are appreciative of being given the opportunity to work, they also bring a positive dynamic to the workplace. A lot of these people left behind families and friends to start a new life in Canada; those stories often resonate with us when hiring.”

In the Moncton business community, there is arguably no greater immigrant success story than that of Fancy Pokket owner Mike Timani.

In 1976, Timani immigrated to Toronto from his home in Lebanon. After working in the food and beverage industry for a number of years, he moved to Moncton, and opened a small pita bread bakery and restaurant. That bakery and restaurant is now Atlantic Canada’s largest producer of pita bread, bagels, and tortilla wraps.

At the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce Excellence Awards in October, Fancy Pokket received the Inclusive Hiring Award, given to a “business that has demonstrated leadership in hiring newcomers, and giving them the necessary training, wages, and support to successfully transition to the local workforce.”

In accepting the award, Timani said growing the city’s economy and increasing the population are intertwined.

“The growth of our economy is dependent on increasing our population, which will be achieved through immigration,” Timani said. “Trust me: right now, that is the only angle we have. This is where businesses can make a difference by welcoming [immigrants] warmly and providing the opportunity for gainful employment… with the arrival of Syrian refugees over the past several months, I have witnessed tremendous effort from the Greater Moncton community volunteers, settlement agencies, and many other organizations who welcome these individuals. These efforts are what makes our city special and makes an enormous difference in the retention of these newcomers.” f

GOOD TO GROWBy Suzanne Rent

HOTSHOTS DELIVERIES AND MOVERS STARTED WITH one truck and one car. That was in 2013.

“Now there are three cube trucks, one cargo van, five 5-ton trucks, and four cars,” says Caroline Linteau, sales and marketing manager with the Dieppe-based company.

That’s rapid growth, but it was all part of the plan. The company delivers mail, parcels, food, and more. Its

services include city-to-city deliveries, packing, move-out cleaning, business-to-business pickup and delivery.

Hotshots works primarily in the Maritimes, but has delivered as far away as Montreal.

“We deliver everything,” Linteau says. “It’s about customer needs. Everything that can go in a truck, we never say no.” She says the company is willing to adapt its service to win a customer. “We always change our services for what the customers need,” she says. “It’s really on point.”

“[Staff] are really careful,” Linteau says. “They always do their best and we always want them to look good and present themselves as professional.”

Linteau credits a part of the company’s success to the fact that it’s a family business.

“We are all family and can talk to each other directly,” she says. “And we can all give our own point of view.”

She also credits the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce for its help since the business started. Linteau says the Chamber’s events, promotion, and advice serve the business well.

“They give an opportunity for us to be bigger,” Linteau says. “They always give you advice. That’s been great.”

Linteau has her own advice for companies looking to open shop in the tri-community area: start small and keep it that way for a bit.

“I think Moncton is a great place to open a business because Moncton is growing,” she says. “I find we had a chance and a lot of help.” Once your small business is going smoothly it’ll be easier to grow, she says.

Even with its recent rapid growth, Linteau says the company plans to continue expanding.

“I hope for the future we will be bigger than a transport company,” Linteau says. “That’s what we hope, maybe not in a year or two from now. But that’s the dream.” f

CROISSANCE RAPIDEPar Suzanne Rent

NUTTALL RESTORATION CELEBRATES 41 YEARS By Ken Kelley

EVERY DAY BOB NUTTALL CARRIES ON A FAMILY LEGACY his father began four decades earlier.

“My father [Walter] had been working as a carpenter for a number of years before he ultimately decided to strike out on his own,” Bob says. “He had been hired to help repair damages stemming from the Groundhog Day storm of 1976. It was from that time on, he became a contractor for fire, flood, and restoration repairs for insurance companies.” That infamous storm is still remembered across the region as one that hit New Brunswick with wild winds that damaged home up and down the East Coast.

Within a year of charting his new direction, Nuttall Construction’s business was so strong that Walter hired his first employee.

Today, Bob runs the company that employs 22. In September he renamed the company Nuttall Restoration to give customers a clearer picture of its services. The company celebrated the rebranding with presentations on disaster preparedness and donations to the Red Cross and the Friends of the Moncton Hospital Foundation.

“I’ve learned a lot from my father, including how to deal with folks who are generally going through one of the worst experiences of their life,” Bob says. “Seeing how he treated them and how to help manage those times has proven to be invaluable.”

“We aren’t necessarily in any position to represent ourselves on a national level, but being a member of the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce has helped open doors for us with others higher up the food chain,” he says. "We are proud to have remained

L'ENTREPRISE NUTTALL RESTORATION FÊTE SES 41 ANS Par Ken Kelley

an independent company all these years, but it has definitely been made easier by our association with the Chamber.”

As the Riverview-based business grew over the decades, many family members have logged hours at the company, either as summer students or full-time employees. While Bob says he doesn’t anticipate retiring soon, he started working on a succession plan that will eventually see him hand the reins to his nephew, Rod Gallant.

Keeping Nuttall Restoration in the family is both a matter of pride and good business sense. Bob says the company has built trustworthy relationships with its customers over the last 41 years.

“If anyone has a problem, they can feel reassured that it’s someone local that is going to see the matter through to resolution,” he says. “That community support of keeping money in the region goes both ways as well; we are proud and happy to use local retailers for supplies.” f
