Dear friends of Alliance,

We are very pleased to see you again as we begin the year 2013. We hope that the holidays were for you, as they were for us, a time to relax after a hectic 2012 full of activities.

Beyond all the resolutions usually made at the beginning of the year, we will endeavor to keep up the momentum by offering a cultural program that builds upon the exciting program of 2012. We will try our best to surprise you and to propose new activities that you will hopefully enjoy. Indeed, the Alliance Francaise of Dar es Salaam is, before everything, a place for expression, openness, meeting, and creativity, and it is open to all.

This year we continue with the new adaptation of Barazani which has been popular amongst many of you. Our objective with Barazani is to help you discover more and more new artists. The Music Quiz launched last year is now a permanent event and will be held every month with all new themes. Among the new events and activities: Le Café des Idées will provide a space for all kinds of people who have good ideas to speak openly. At each

gathering, one or two themes will be defined and a discussion in French will begin, with people sharing and debating over their views. One principle that everyone must follow: Respect each other's opinions! Speed dating "en Français", an event borrowing from the American concept of speed dating, will aim not to have you meet your soul mate, but rather to help you practice your French in a friendly and original context.

Being open involves not only giving opportunity to artists from different backgrounds to perform at Alliance, but also being willing to organize events outside the walls of Alliance. Thus on January 23rd at Trinity Bar (co - organizers of the event), there will be an evening featuring music by the electronic group Think Twice (French DJs).

This year, more than ever, we have to gather, discover, share and create, in a world that needs it.

LumumbaFrance, République of Congo (2000)

6.30pmENTRANCE FREE

Friday 11th January 2013

The true story of the rise to power and brutal assassination of the formerly vilified and later redeemed leader of the independent Congo, Patrice Lumumba. Using newly discovered historical evidence, Haitian-born and later Congo-raised writer and director Raoul Peck renders an emotional and tautly woven account of the mail clerk and beer salesman with a flair for oratory and an uncompromising belief in the capacity of his homeland to build a prosperous nation independent of its former Belgium overlords. Lumumba emerges here as the heroic sacrificial lamb dubiously portrayed by the international media and led to slaughter by commercial and political interests in Belgium, the United States, the international community, and Lumumba’s own administration; a true story of political intrigue and murder where political entities, captains of commerce, and the military dovetail in their quest for economic and political hegemonyDirector : Raoul Peck

Wednesday 23 RdJanuary 2013

For nearly 10 years, the Think twice dj set composed of Jean-Christophe Couderc and Rémy Voet, spreading his music on the French and international stages. One is a musician, another designer, met on the occasion of the first French electronic evenings in 1991. Since then, they have remained united by their passion for music and records. In 1998, they opened a Vinyl store in Paris and become residents of the famous Parisian club "La Fabrique", where they made their arms alongside the biggest DJs of the moment: Lil Louis, Kerry Chandler, François Kevorkian, Metro Area,...

In 2003, they decided to create their own musical project Think twice. They are immediately spotted by Laurent Garnier who is seeking new "sounds" for his label Fcommunications. Their explosive mixture of electronic music and rock-tinged funk propel them immediately in front of the stage. Think twice dj set had its first experience in Africa in 2011, in Rwanda, where the two artists spent a week training and preparing young Rwandan Djs to celebrate the Fête de la Musique.

Friday 25th January 2013

Algiers, 1920’s. Rabbi Sfar has more than one problem. His beautiful daughter is becoming a teenager and above all, his parrot-killing cat has just started talking! The delivery of a box from Russia further complicates things when a painter is discovered inside, more dead than alive. He is on a quest for a hidden tribe and its mythical city in Africa. Convinced that the city exists, he sets off on an incredible adventure, taking with him the Rabbi, his cat, a wise old Arab Sheikh and an eccentric Russian billionaire. Sfar’s style and vision carries a universal message of tolerance, in this highly original, beautifully crafted film, celebrating a joyful and multi-colorful return to hand-drawn 2D.Director : Joann Sfar, Antoine Delesvaux

LUMUMBATheatre Group

Alliance Show Grounds7.00pm - 10.30pmENTRANCE FREE

Wednesday 6th February 2013

A group of talented singers, dancers, actors, choreographers and musicians, based in Dar es Salaam. The group was established in 1997 by Director Dyu-to Komba when he brought together talented students of Lumumba Primary School. Still based at the school, in the Mnazi Mmoja area of the city, Lumumba is driven by its vision of the youth in Tanzania as a catalyst for social change. Towards this end, they centre activities on facilitating artistic training work-shops in dance, theatre and music, providing young people with opportunities to learn, express their creativity and perform. To date the group has performed all over Tanzania and at festivals in Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique, Germany, Denmark, India and Poland. In their early years, the group focused on traditional dances of Tanzania. They have now diversified activities to also offer work-shops in contemporary dance, theatrical productions, storytelling, script writing and afro-fusion music. Instruments featured in their performances these days include saxophone, flute, marimba, keyboards, bass and percussion. Imbued with their discipline, commitment, experience in contemporary and traditional dance, their live show never disappoints; their high-energy dancing and musical prowess set them apart.

Alliance Show Grounds7.00pm - 10.30pmENTRANCE FREE

Wednesday 6th February 2013

The Dar es Salaam based group started in 2008, with ten musicians, the majority of whom are physically disabled. They chose the name Tunaweza, to make a point – it roughly translates as “Yes, We Can!”

The group consists of thirteen members, who between them play a variety of instruments. Masoud Wanani, the group’s founder and director says “Our aims are to help ourselves by earning a living through doing something creative and expressing ourselves. At the same time we can educate the youth about important issues like HIV or the need to respect albinos.”

Since their performance in the seventh edition of Sauti za Busara they have added four new band members who have allowed the group to develop new material “with a new flavour” says Kudra Abdullah, one of the founding members.

Friday 8th February 2013

Paris, in the early 1960s. Jean-Louis Joubert is a serious but uptight stockbroker, married to Suzanne, a starchy class-conscious woman and father of two arrogant teenage boys, currently in a boarding school. The affluent man lives a steady yet boring life. At least until, due to fortuitous circumstances, Maria, the charming new maid at the service of Jean-Louis’ family, makes him discover the servants’ quarter on the sixth floor of the luxury building he owns and lives in. There live a crowd of lively Spanish maids who will help Jean-Louis to open to a new civilization and a new approach of life. In their company - and more precisely in the company of beautiful Maria - Jean-Louis will gradually become another man, a better man.

Beata E. Mubita(360 Degrees Woman)

Opening 6.30ENTRANCE FREE

Tuesday 19th February 2013

The purpose behind my painting is expressing all aspects or feelings of a woman. Women are seen as mothers, workers, home makers and wife, they are not usually seen as having ambitions, achievers and being full of spirit. My work reflects all that is known and expected about women but also which is usally ignored - their ambitions and dreams.  My target audiance is society in general but mostly women to understand that it is ok to have passion and ambition. I would like the expression from my paitings to bring peace and joy to people.  My paintings are expressions of my feelings and feelings are not real unless you share them to society. I also have a message for society especially women that it is okay for them to be seen as complete human being not just care givers, mothers and wives.

TO BE OR NOT BORN GRIOT. In Africa we do not become griot, it is by birth and this status is transmitted from generation to generation. Holder of the memory and tradition, guaranteeing the proper functioning of the community, at other times laudatory and spokesperson of kings, the griot was long the backbone of African society. Almost nothing is decided without him. Real social cement, builder of this building on the past, its power, then, was immense.

The loved one disembarks from a taxi, as born by the cyclone. He has been through the hell, he is dying. Will Marguerite heal his wounds and his nightmares? The strongest and the most pure passion will finally make her find the man with eleven years old, the son of his son. Each page of the novel by this author reveals inspiration fed by his native island. But the author is too much writer to fall into the exotic. Its subject is love, endless love as a natural element and the love that is stronger than the death.

Victor, it is a bad luck, what are you doing outside?" For four months, this sentence accompanies the blue circles that arise at night, drawn in chalk on the sidewalks of Paris. At the center of these circles, prisoners, debris, waste, a lost object: trombone, candle, tweezers, pigeon leg ...The phenomenon is the delight of journalists and a few psychiatrists who theorize: a maniac or a player. The Commissioner Adamsberg did not laugh, these circles are heterogeneous content and ominous. He knows and he feels that soon the trivial will be absurd to the tragic. He is right, one morning the body of a woman was found slain in the midst of one of the blue circles.
