DESCRIPTION

Searching for new perspectives on a daily basis, I need challenges to progress. The solution of yesterday will certainly not be the answer for tomorrow and I like this constant questioning offered by architecture. A.F.

ÉTUDES - STUDIES

The constraint of the project was to adapt the existing Naexus immersive system* by making it mobile and open to a larger public than 4 or 6 people. This device should be used for projec-tions, theatre, performances or archi-tectural visualization.

I designed this structure as an itiner-ant shelter to host events and its main attraction : the NAEXUS 2, a 360° immersive system. A half globe made from an infl atable PVC membrane will be both shelter and screen.

To protect the projection globe and cre-ate a transition from the exterior, I had to think about a specifi c “jewel box” dimen-sioned like a building. This shell is also a way to attract the view from outside and to generate a special atmosphere for the visitors. I also imagined using it for other purposes than the sole exploitation of the Naexus such as concerts, special events, balls and so on.

The purpose of « Changing Cities » studio was to map the situation of Limerick and other Irish cities, to do thematic research such as waste management, housing, shopping, industry etc. and, ultimately, to obtain missing pieces of information from journeys to the actual places. Our team was in charge of the data analysis for the Housing sector. We chose to study “King’s Island” in more detail. Within a town touched by the “shrinking city” phe-nomenon, this wetland is enclosed to the city with recurrent criminal matters due to a high unemployment rate. St Mary’s Park quarter, which today is subject to destruction, is settled on an artifi cial el-evation. Together with locals, we also noticed the existence of a strong feeling of community, which connects the inhab-itants. The proposition of being relocated somewhere else by the local authorities tends to break this community, spread-ing them all over town.

Our Project was oriented on two aspects of intervention, in order to propose alter-native projects to the town and the City Council. Working with urban typologies and housing plans, we designed several house extension systems to avoid system-atic destruction. On a more entertaining note, plans and sections have been real-ized according to photographs of existing houses being cut by a steam shovel.

As part of the course “Here and some-where else”, we traveled to Miami city for twenty days. During this time, we have been asked to search for a project site and to elaborate a program in an-swer to on site observation.

I chose to exploit an informal parking lot, used to host cars during events in the adjoining “American Airlines Arena Stadium”, to create a new City Hall Com-plex. Currently located in Coconut Grove district, the size of the town hall does not seem to match with the city’ scale. The idea of the building is to integrate vari-ous administrative functions, which are currently spread all over town, in one administrative complex.

Its shape is based on the Menger Sponge and, as a coral, it allows a certain poros-ity in the structure to create a natural ventilation.

This project is a combination of an ur-ban renewal studio combined with an architectural intervention. By destroy-ing and /or conserving some existing structures previously used as electrical transformer and tramway hangars, the district is impacted by the building of a new concert hall, which hosts exhibition spaces and conference rooms.

The ARK Hotel **** is a structure made of old shipping containers converted into 25m² apartments. Each room is a com-bination of two standardized 20’’ feet containers, furnished using materials proposed by partners brands. The use of this structural system is justifi ed by a simple combination to keep the maxi-mum amount of structural properties. The main concept of the bedroom : to ac-company you from work to bed. Targeted clients are mainly business travelers or temporary residents. What they usually search in those “products” is to sleep in a comfortable place and to continue their daily activities like at home or at work.

So the bed is positioned in the middle of the room around which essential func-tions of the program are gravitating (sleeping-eating-drinking-(un)dressing- washing (up)… )

Bologna - Quarto InferioreITALIE - ITALY

The competition brief asked to imple-ment a cultural center in the suburbs of Bologna, on the site of an old Fac-tory. Our thought was fi rst to redesign the interior spaces by destroying some fl oors to create double heights and new connections in between ground and upper levels. Then we decided to add an extension with a contemporary de-sign to densify the village which tends to spread on the surrounding fi elds. This building extension would host new housing units for future students, following the L shaped roof construc-tion. Finally, a large transparent roof in between the two elements of the U shaped building will cover an outdoor exhibition space, connecting the build-ing’s functions.

The contest brief required to create a multimodal platform in the center of Miami Downtown. The building’s archi-tecture occupies the plot’s length and is organized by a giant ramp which guides the user toward functions through the cycle parking space, without the need of an elevator.

To enhance the whole system, an indoor/outdoor gym is located in between con-crete plates to encourage users to work out nearby soft mobility promotion spaces such as car sharing platform, bike sharing, or a cycle shop …

I was hired at Nelobo after having met Olivier BOUCHERON during my last year of my Bachelor studies, when he was still a lecturer at my university. I was fi rst interested in and then fasci-nated by the work of this agency, which takes a very different approach than the classical vision of architecture. During my internships, I got the opportunity to move from paper plans to 3D modeling and construction sites. I have also as-sisted with all project stages and even got the possibility to help with an archi-tectural contest, which was later won by the agency.

I have been told by my aunt that a proj-ect remained in her head. A strong will to change her life came to her mind and she thought about using her garage as a re-tail space. She intends to use the histori-cal features of the building to host a tea house and create a new business, in the same spot where a smithy used to be in the past century. The particular nature of the existing structure made the proj-ect more complex due to the obligation to respect laws concerning the accessibility of low mobility people. As the house is lo-cated on a slope, the access can be made only by the garage’s door that is going to close the future showcase.

The major problem in this project is concerned with the toilets. They could be situated in one of the numerous cor-ners but the level of the fl oors must not be changed. Bearing in mind that the build-ing is fairly old and thus the foundations are tangent to the rocks, a change in fl oor level is a very delicate procedure. I have thus proposed two different solu-tions to the problem, taking into account the advantages and drawbacks of either solution. It’s a shame that we, nowa-days, have to talk about the size of toilets, rather than architecture in such a unique case.

After the fi rst year of architecture, I spent a month during summer on a con-struction site to be more aware of the construction process. I integrated a ma-sonry crew who was in charge of pour-ing concrete foundations for a Tanks and hangars at Bordeaux’s harbour. Then I joined the building of the new Nurse School in Bègles which has been built re-using former military hangars.

During the third year of architecture I came, once or twice a week for four months, to the meetings on the build-ing site of a 21 apartments multi-family housing project. I followed its evolution with the ACA and the Works supervisor from the foundation installation until the 5th fl oor. This was an excellent occasion for me to complement my formation by sketching details on site and picturing the construction phasing.

I had the privilege to assist the young fi rm Vienna Interiors while working as a freelancer in Vienna. I enjoyed interact-ing with the fi rm and I really appreci-ated the diversity of scales to work with. From sketches of a desk to the design of a whole offi ce building interior. The results are often classy casual interiors to fi t the clients’ mood.

Personal work somewhere in between graphism and cartography realized for the x-rockies project’s website. Thomas and Nelson needed a specifi c map for communication purpose on their future trip from North to South of Rocky Moun-tains. So they asked me to think about a way to draw their path through the mountains in the fashion of an ancient map.

The complexity of this photo shooting lies in its angular situation and its dense urban context. I had to go back on site numerous times to catch the right point of view without any parasite vehicle in the frame and with a suffi cient depth of fi eld. The details of its silver façade were also an important element to take into consideration with the surroundings.

I fi rst came to this building with the in-tention to capture its night life, which, in my opinion, best refl ects the building’s use. A student housing unit with partly il-luminated windows reminding the music students hosted within its concrete walls. Then I received guide lines to highlight the building’s architecture under natural light, observing the light games on con-crete. This allowed me to go back on site in order to render a much wider spec-trum of the subject.
