Tasting Highlights' wine reviews are fresh out of the tasting room, offering a sneak peek of our editors' most recent scores and notes to WineSpectator.com members.

In my last annual tasting report on South Africa, I noted that the country's wine industry has finally arrived—qualitatively speaking.

It's been exciting to watch the Cape evolve into a major player on the world's wine stage. Syrah and Chenin Blanc have surged, while blue-chip grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are consistently excellent. Throw in a mélange of offbeat varietals from Sémillon and Palomino to Grenache and Cinsault, mix in both warm- and cool-climate areas, and South Africa's versatility is hard to beat.

From a windswept hillside in Stellenbosch, the Bartinney Cabernet Sauvignon from owner Rose Jordaan is quietly creating a solid track record. It's made in a fresh, mineral-accented style, while not eschewing the grape's distinct currant fruit profile. The wine is a textbook example of how the Cape's best reds combine New World and Old World characteristics. Versions from Ernie Els, Rust en Vrede and Stark-Condé deliver varying amounts of grip and darker fruit profiles, for those who like their Cabernet with more power.

Whites are well worth seeking out too. Bartinney's Chardonnay lets its fruit shine without being encumbered by toasty oak, while bottlings from Buitenverwachting and De Morgenzon deliver for those who like their Chardonnay with hints of hazelnut and brioche.

And then there's the value factor: 11 of the 16 wines here cost $20 or less per bottle, and all are $30 or less, often overdelivering for their price points.
