A Note From Leadership

100 YEARS OF STRENGTHENING LIVES 1

In 2018, the Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants proudly celebrated one hundred years of service to refugees and immigrants in Connecticut. Marking its Centennial, CIRI celebrated the determination, resilience, and courage of the thousands of refugees, immigrants, survivors of torture and human trafficking, and unaccompanied minors we serve every year. We celebrated the human spirit and the human capacity for hope. We celebrated 100 years of new beginnings.

In February 2018, we launched our centennial year with An American Story, an exhibit honoring the many immigrants and refugees who enrich our Connecticut communities. The eight individuals featured in the exhibit, which was designed and curated collaboratively with Fairfield Museum and History Center, remind us that there is no singular refugee or immigrant story. We are deeply grateful to the people featured in the exhibit for trusting us with their stories.

We continued our Centennial celebration with a beautiful sit-down dinner in Hartford at Real Art Ways, where guests enjoyed Syrian food and live music. We were honored to have Mayor Luke Bronin open the event, and to have Attorney General William Tong provide keynote remarks. We celebrated our statewide presence and the exceptional work that our Immigration Legal Services team does throughout Connecticut.

What’s a 100 year anniversary without a Centennial Gala! In September 2018, we toasted the 100 year history of this exceptional organization with over 350 of our closest supporters. We honored Farooq Kathwari with our Legacy Award, Fairfield University Center for Faith and Public Life with the Circle of Achievement Award and launched our American Dream Awards.

Our centennial year was set within an environment that is increasingly challenging for the people we serve. There are an unprecedented number of displaced people - over 68.5 million in June 2018, over 25 million of whom were refugees – and an onslaught of anti-immigrant policies and laws. More so than ever before, we remain a refuge for our clients, a safe place where they seek legal protection, good counsel and a new start to their lives in America. We are vigilant as a guardian of rights and keeper of facts.

CIRI 2018 ANNUAL REPORT 2

And we remain a tireless educator on critical issues, dispelling myths and misperceptions, and resolutely speaking the truth.

We are so proud of our 100 years of service. Thank you for celebrating our Centennial with us! Thank you for standing with refugees, immigrants, and survivors.

100 YEARS OF STRENGTHENING LIVES 3

A Letter From Our Board ChairDuring 2018, we celebrated CIRI’s centennial anniversary. Founded in 1918, CIRI’s mission remains as steadfast today as it did 100 years ago. We have talented and committed staff, dedicated volunteers, and strong community partnerships with nonprofits, religious institutions, and state and federal elected officials. CIRI works tirelessly day in and day out to ensure that our clients receive high-quality, compassionate services that empower them to thrive in Connecticut.

As was the case in 2017, the 2018 federal immigration and refugee landscape posed challenges to our work. The refugee admissions ceiling was lowered yet again to allow just 45,000 refugees in the United States–a drastic reduction from prior years. We’ve seen similar setbacks for our immigration clients, with regular changes to policy that make it harder for our clients to settle into their new lives. Through it all, our clients persevere.

I’m proud of the work CIRI has done over the last year, and thrilled to work alongside them on the Board of Directors.

I hope you will take the opportunity to learn more about our work. CIRI is changing lives. Join us.

With gratitude,

James Rulmyr, CIRI Board Member, Board Chair 2017-2019

CIRI 2018 ANNUAL REPORT 4

In the first two decades of the 20th century there were fifteen million immigrants to the United States. The YWCA recognized the need to provide specialized services to these new immigrants and created a special department to address this need.

Later, the YWCA’s War Work Council transformed itself into the Department of Immigration and Foreign Communities, and established “International Institutes” in more than 60 cities in the United States. The International Institute of Connecticut was established in 1918.

For 100 years, we have been inspiring New Beginnings. First as the International Institute of Connecticut. Today, as the Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants.

100 YEARS OF STRENGTHENING LIVES 7

This exhibition opened in February 2018 at the Fairfield Museum and History Center. “An American Story: Finding Home in Fairfield County,” highlights the experiences of refugees and immigrants who have built new lives in Fairfield County. A series of photographic portraits and biographical narratives share how eight individuals from Cambodia, Congo, Cuba, Hungary, India, Rwanda, and Syria have rebuilt their lives and created a sense of home. Seeking safety and opportunity here, refugees and immigrants from around the world have added to the fabric of our communities. The exhibition honored the 100th anniversary of the Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants (CIRI).

CIRI 2018 ANNUAL REPORT 10

Eliana’s StoryEliana is from Colombia. She was forced to flee after suffering years of death threats, severe verbal and sexual assaults, and physical attacks inflicted on her by her ex-boyfriend. The Colombian government was unable to protect her, as it continues to battle years of ongoing armed conflict, corruption, and numerous infrastructure challenges. In the United States, Eliana and her children found assistance and protection in the arms of the United States government and its people. And they found the promise of a new life.

At CIRI, Eliana’s attorney, Noel Haddock, empowered her with the courage and ability to speak her truth. Eliana’s case went to trial the same day that former Attorney General Sessions announced a prohibition of asylum cases based on domestic violence. Her CIRI staff attorney fought for Eliana and her family and their continued safety and security. To Eliana’s joy and great relief, her asylum application was granted. CIRI will continue to support Eliana as she tries to reunite with her 7-year old son, who remains with Eliana’s abuser in Colombia.

AWARE selected CIRI as its 2018-2019 partner, creating Girls’ Club to empower

and engage refugee girls.

100 YEARS OF STRENGTHENING LIVES 13

“We come to America for a better life, but are handed extremities, including the extra mile we have to go to be a part of this nation. As an immigrant, I have to work twice as hard to receive the same opportunities American-born citizens are granted. An African can go from being a doctor in their home country, to being a custodian in America. This is the reality of immigration.”

Lambert and his family immigrated from Nyarugusu, a refugee camp in Tanzania. His love of soccer and dancing has helped him form meaningful friendships in the United States. He hopes to earn his degree in business.

Hope for the Future

Save the Children partnered with CIRI to celebrate World Refugee Day, bringing

25 volunteers to Seaside Park to support CIRI’s annual event.
