C'est désormais traditionnel : chaque année, l'ouverture duSalon International d'Art Photographique Photo-phylles annonce l'arrivée du printemps au Jardin Botanique.

Sans l'ombre d'un doute ce 7e salon surpasse, et de loin, les six précédents : 297 auteurs de 32 pays différents ont présenté pas moins de 1874 photographies. Nous n'en espérions pas tant... Nos trois juges, Jean-Philippe BRO, Marie-Reine DUBOIS et Jonas BANIAKINA, ainsi qu'un petitgroupe d'amis fidèles venus nous apporter une aide précieuse, méritent les plus vifs remerciements !

Les photographies étaient réparties entre deux sections, « A » pour les espèces sauvages en milieu naturel et « B »pour toutes les autres. Voyons d'abord la première.

La définition de la photographie de nature donnée par la Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique (FIAP) correspond en tous points à la mission pédagogique du Jardin Botanique. En résumé, l'intérêt documentaire de la scène représentée compte davantage que les aspects artistiques mais pour autant, ces derniers ne doivent en aucun cas être négligés.

N'en déplaise à ceux pour qui photographie de nature rimeavec oiseaux en vol, papillons aux ailes chatoyantes ou grands fauves africains, la photographie des plantes et deschampignons est un art particulièrement difficile auquel justice n'est pas toujours rendue, loin de là.

Certes, les plantes et les champignons ne s'enfuient pas à la vue ou à l'odeur du photographe et ne viennent pas nonplus à sa rencontre. Nous sommes ici dans un domaine où les frimeurs adeptes des affûts payants et des téléobjectifsmonstrueux n'ont pas vraiment leur place. Une bonne paire de chaussures et une excellente connaissance des espèces et des biotopes, pour savoir où et quand trouver des sujets intéressants, sont bien plus utiles.

Une fois le sujet découvert, il faut encore le mettre en valeur, montrer les caractères permettant de reconnaître l'espèce, situer celle-ci le mieux possible au sein de son environnement, ou au contraire mettre l'accent sur un détail remarquable ; le photographe doit tirer profit de la topographie des lieux, de la lumière disponible, et toujourssoigner la composition de sa future photographie. C'est souvent plus facile à dire qu'à faire !

La section « B » n'était pas destinée à recevoir le trop-plein de photographies de la section « A », mais plutôt à présenter des œuvres originales montrant les interactions entre le monde des végétaux et des champignons et l'activité humaine. Les paysages agricoles, les plantes cultivées, les natures mortes à base d'éléments végétaux, les marchés et leurs étalages de fruits et de légumes, la fabrication du papier... ainsi que toutes les interprétations artistiques du monde végétal étaient ici autorisées et même encouragées.

De toute évidence, certains de nos participants ont réalisé des prises de vues spécialement pour le Salon tandis que d'autres se sont contentés de puiser dans leurs réserves. Le fait que cette compétition soit reconduite d'une année sur l'autre devrait logiquement inciter beaucoup d'auteurs à penser « Photo-phylles » dès qu'ils auront l'occasion de réaliser des photographies appropriées à notre thème.

Il est par ailleurs une idée que nous n'oublions jamais : lors d'un salon d'art photographique, les organisateurs et les participants sont embarqués sur le même bateau, les uns ne peuvent rien faire sans les autres !

It is from now on traditional: every year, the opening of the International Salon of Photographic Art Photo-phylles announces the arrival of the spring to the Botanical garden.

Without a shadow of doubt this 7th Salon surpasses, and by far, the six precedents: 297 authors of 32 different countries presented not less than 1874 photos. We did not hope for so much... Our three judges, Jean-Philippe BRO, Marie-Reine DUBOIS and Jonas BANIAKINA, as well as a small group of faithful friends who bring us a precious help, deserve the deepest thanks!

Photos were distributed between two sections, "A" for the wild species in natural environment and "B" for the quite different. Let us see the first one. The definition of the nature photography given by the International Federation of the Photographic Art ( FIAP) corresponds in every respect to the educational mission of the Botanical Garden.In summary, the documentary interest of the represented scenes counts more that the artistic aspects but for all that, the latter must never be neglected.

However unpleasant it might seem to those for whom photograph of nature rhyme with birds during flight, butterflies with brilliant wings or big wild African animals, the photography of plants and mushrooms is an art particularly difficult for which justice is not still returned, far from there.

Certainly, plants and mushrooms do not run away in the sight or in the smell of the photographers and do not either come to meet them. We are here in a domain wherethe boasters followers of the paying hides and the monstrous telephoto lenses really have not their place. A good pair of shoes and an excellent knowledge of the species and the biotopes, to know where and when to find interesting subjects, are more useful.

Once the subject was discovered, it is again necessary to emphasize it, to show the characters allowing to recognize the species, to place them as good as possible within its environment, or on the contrary to emphasize a remarkable detail; the photographer has to benefit from the topography of places, available light, and always to look after the composition of his future photography. It is often easier to say it than to make it!

The section "B" is not intended to receive the surplus of photos of the section "A", but to present original works showing the interactions between the world of plants and mushrooms and human activity. The agricultural landscapes, the cultivated plants, the still lives with vegetalelements, the markets and their displays of fruits and vegetables, the manufacturing of the paper as well as all the artistic performances of the vegetable world are authorized and even encouraged here.

Apparently, some of our participants realized shots specially for the Salon whereas others contented with drawing from their reserves. The fact that this competition is renewed from one year to the next should logically incitemany authors to think "of Photo-phylles" as soon as they will have the opportunity to realize photos suited to our theme.

It is besides an idea which we never forget: during a lsalonof photographic art, the organizers and the participants areembarked on the same boat, the ones can make nothing without the others!

What more can we say, otherwise that thanks to all and long life for the Salon Photo-phylles in the Botanical Garden of Bordeaux!

Hommage à Toni BALLOTTA

Toni était la fille d'un soldat italien, fait prisonnier par les Anglais durant la 2e Guerre mondiale, transféré en Afrique du Sud et libéré sur parole pour aller travailler aux champs.D'abord élève dans des institutions religieuses, elle poursuivit ses études et obtint une maîtrise en littérature anglaise à l'Université d'Afrique du Sud (UNISA).

Toni prit goût à la photographie voici 15 ans et adhéra à la Pretoria Photographic Society. Elle suivit de nombreux ateliers avec le célèbre photographe canadien Freeman Patterson dans le Richtersveld, la Côte ouest, le Canada et le Namaqualand. Elle adhéra à la Photographic Society of South Africa, dont elle devint membre du Conseil d'Administration, puis Directrice nationale, un poste qu'elle quitta dans l'intention d'écrire son propre livre. Une autre de ses passions était la peinture à l'huile, elle peignait souvent d'après ses propres photographies.

Toni Ballotta était une des plus fidèles participantes de Photo-phylles, elle aimait beaucoup la photographie de nature et chaque année nous avions le plaisir d'exposer quelques unes de ses meilleures œuvres. Elle nous a quittés prématurément voici peu de temps. Nous remercions sa nièce Helen qui a bien voulu nous faire parvenir ces quelques clichés.

Tribute to Toni BALLOTTA

Toni was the daughter of an Italian soldier, caught by the British during the 2nd world war, put in a camp in South Africa and released on parole to work on farms. Toni's schooling was mainly in Convent schools. She continued her studies and obtained a Master's Degree in English Literature from the University of South Africa (Unisa).

Toni took an interest in photography about 14 years ago and joined the Pretoria Photographic Society. She attendedmany wonderful workshops with Freeman Patterson the well-known Canadian photographer in the Richtersveld, West coast, Canada and Namaqualand. Toni joined the Photographic Society of South Africa and was appointed Editor of Image magazine. As a National Director of the Photographic Society of South Africa she was also a Member of the Board. A post she has relinquished as she wants to pursue doing her own book. Yet, another passion which developed over the years is painting in oils. She often used her own photographs to paint from.

Toni Ballotta was one of the most faithful participants in Photo-phylles, she deeply liked nature photography and each year we had pleasure to hang on some of her best works. She left us prematurely a few months ago. We thank her niece Helen who was kind enough to send us these few photos.

Les Nymphaeaceae sont des plantes aquatiques rhizomateuses, communément appelées nénuphars, qui croissent dans les zones tempérées et tropicales du mondeentier. Elles sont enracinées dans le sol au fond de l'eau, leurs feuilles et leurs fleurs flottent à la surface. Leurs feuilles sont arrondies avec une encoche dans les genres Nymphaea and Nuphar et entièrement rondes dans le genre Victoria.

Les Nymphaeaceae ont été très étudiés en raison de leurs caractéristiques botaniques. Ils ont été abondamment hybridés pour l'ornement des jardins depuis le 19e siècle, et les hybrides sont répartis en trois groupes : ceux qui résistent au gel, les espèces tropicales à floraison nocturneet les espèces tropicales à floraison diurne.

The members of the Nymphaeaceae family are rhizomatous aquatic herbs we can find in temperate and tropical climates around the world.Water lilies are rooted insoil in bodies of water, with leaves and flowers floating on the surface. The leaves are round, with a radial notch in Nymphaea and Nuphar, but fully circular in Victoria.

Water lilies are a well studied clade of plants because of their botanic charateristics. They were largely hybridized for temperate gardens since the nineteenth century, and the hybrids are divided into three groups: hardy, night-blooming tropical, and day-blooming tropical water lilies.

Les chapeaux de ce champignon sont très petits, environ 15 mm, mais ils attirent immédiatement l'attention grâce à leur couleur bleu clair avec des disques centraux sombres. Les lames blanches sont aussi bordées de bleu. On le trouve sur des branches mortes et de temps en temps sur des pommes de pin tombées au sol. Parc National des Gammes d'Otway, Victoria, Australie.

Although very small (caps to 15mm across) the unique, bright blue caps with their dark central discs draw immediate attention. The white gills are also edged with blue. Raúl VILLALBA (Argentine) - Wings of spring

Raúl Villalba est l'un des artistes photographes les plus renommés denotre temps au niveau international. Il est né à Buenos Aires et il a débuté en photographie à 17 ans, quand il a pris en main un vieil appareil photo qu'il n'a jamais lâché depuis. Son engagement artistique inébranlable lui a donné une extraordinaire maîtrise dans la publicité, le portrait, les jaquettes de livres, les illustrations, la mode, les couvertures d'albums, de CD et de DVD, la poésie, les contes de fées, la littérature, pour des nombreux éditeurs en vue en Argentine. L'éveil créatif de Raúl l'a conduit à chercher sans cesse plus profondément pour se découvrir lui-même et développer ses propres méthodes peu orthodoxes et les techniques qui donnent à son travail un style véritablement unique.

Alors que la renommée de ses œuvres d'art et de son travail commercial grandissait, Raúl a commencé à se faire connaître en participant à de nombreuses compétitions et expositions internationales ; on ne compte plus les médailles d'or et autres récompenses qu'il a remportées dans le monde entier. Être l'un de ses amis est un grand honneur

Raúl Villalba is one of the most internationally renowned photographic artist of our times. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and he began his immersion into the realm of photography at the age of 17 when he picked up an old camera and never put it back down. His unwavering artistic commitment set him on an extraordinary journey of self-mastery in the fields of publicity, portraits, book jackets, book illustrations, fashion, album covers and later CD, DVD covers, poetry, fairy tales, literature for numerous prominent publishers in Argentina. Raúl’s creative awakening caused him to continually delve deeper into self-discovery and developing his own unorthodox methods and technics that gives his work a unique distinguishing style and essence.

As popularity in both his art and commercial works grew , Raúl began his artistic expansion by entering many international competitions and exhibitions; he is the recipient of countless gold, silver and bronze medals and other awards from worldwide. Being one of his friends is a great honour.

This carnation grows in the prairies and rocky places in height. « Beech » in Dutch is also « beech » in English. The authorcaught very well the autumn atmosphere in a park by taking advantage of the misty morning.

« Dans la province du Yunnan, au nord de la Chine, j'ai visité la ville de Lijiang., où j'ai pris cette photo, que j'ai appelée plus tard Lijiang. Dans cette province de Chine les gens se consacrent à la culture du riz. Ma photo décrit ce qui se passe juste après que le riz a été coupé et séché, il est transporté par les femmes depuis les champs jusqu'à leur maison pour le nettoyage final et le stockage. De cettefaçon les femmes contribuent à l'économie des familles. Lerouge intense opposé au blanc des habits, les grands paniers, la poussière du chemin, les corps ployés, l'espacement des femmes, les lignes diagonales et la composition générale de la photo, lui donnent une atmosphère plaisante et un intérêt tout spécial ».

« In the Yunnan Province in the north of China I visited thecity of Lijiang. In this city I shot my photo giving later the title Lijiang. In this province of China people are occupied with the growth of rice. My photo describes the period after the rice has been cropped and dried out is lugged by the women from the fields to their homes for the final cleaning and storage. In this way women contribute to the financial development of their families. The intense red against the white dressing, the big baskets, the dust of theroad, the bent bodies, the distances of the women, the diagonal lines of the photo and the composition in general,give an nice atmosphere and give the photo a special interest ».

Les « bayous » de Louisiane sont d'anciens bras et méandres du Mississippi. La présence d'eau douce différencie ces écosystèmes complexes et très riches de la mangrove. Les cyprès chauves Taxodium distichum, parfaitement adaptés aux milieux humides, ont développé des systèmes racinaires à l'air libre, les pneumatophores, qui leur servent à respirer. Le gros lézard sympathique qui prend le soleil n'est pas un crocodile mais un Alligator.

Les cyprès servent de support à une autre espèce végétale nommée « mousse espagnole » Tillandsia usneoides, dite encore « barbe de vieillard » ou « fille de l'air ». Cette plante de la famille de l'ananas, parfois confondue à tort avec l'usnée barbue qui est un lichen, est répandue depuis l'Argentine et le Chili jusqu'au sud-est des États-Unis. Elle fut très largement utilisée à l’époque coloniale dans la construction, notamment pour la fabrication du bousillage, sorte de torchis à base de mousse espagnole, de boue et de crins de chevaux.

The "bayous" of Louisiana are the former arms and meanders of the Mississippi. The presence of fresh water differentiates these ecosystems complex and very rich in the mangrove swamp. The Bald cypress Taxodium distichum, perfectly adapted to the wet areas, develop aerial roots which are of useto them to breathe. The big nice lizard which takes the sun is not a crocodile but an Alligator.

Cypress are also a support to another botanical species named "Spanish moss" Tillandsia usneoides, said still " beard of the oldman " or " girl of the air ". This plant of the pineapple family is spread since the Argentina and Chile up to the southeast of theUnited States. It is sometimes confused, wrongly, with the bearded usnea, which is a lichen. The Spanish moss was very widely used during the colonial period in the construction, moreparticularly for the manufacturing of the bousillage, a kind of cob with Spanish moss, mud and hair of horses.
