Land of the Last Samurai

Located in the southern part of the Tohoku area, Aizuwakamatsu City has flourished as a major northeastern city since ancient times. In particular, it served as a political and military center, and was famous for its line of celebrated military commanders turned Aizu lords. In 1590, Gamo Ujisato became the lord of Aizu. He was famous as the Christian Lord who brought art and culture to Aizu, and as a star pupil of the esteemed Japanese tea master, Sen-no-Rikyu. We have Ujisato to thank for preserving the Senke Schools of Tea Ceremony to this day. Sometime later, in 1643, Hoshina Masayuki, brother of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the 3rd shogun of the Edo Bakufu, became the lord of the Aizu clan. The Edo Bakufu (also known as the Tokugawa Shogunate) was in control for 225 years, during which the culture of the samurai was at its strongest. In 1868, a huge war similar to the American Civil War broke out in Japan. This war is known as the Boshin Civil War. The battle occurred between the new government, whose aim was to make a new Japan focused on western principals, and the samurai forces of the Tokugawa shogunate which had been in power until then. Though many of the clans allied themselves with the new govern-ment, the Aizu clan fought bravely on the sides of the Tokugawa Shogunate until the very end. Saito Hajime of the Shinsengumi was one of these brave fighters. However, faced with the new technologies of the Meiji government, the Aizu clan was forced to surrender. Aizu became the setting for the last battle of the samurai, and many lives were lost. There are still photographs that exist, showing the damage done to Tsurugajo Castle during the battle.

The merchant culture that broughtabout the revival of the castle town

21

After the Boshin Civil War, merchants played an impor-tant role in the reconstruction of Aizu. Much of the Aizu castle town had been devastated by fire in the Boshin War, and the new government had ordered many of the samurai to leave Aizu. At that time, merchants were at the center of the ruined castle town’s reconstruction. They began to revive traditional industries such as sake brewing, Aizu lacquerware, and the like which had also been hit hard by the war, but would become the driving force behind Aizu’s development. Noguchi Hideyo, world famous bacteriologist and figure on the 1,000 yen note, spent his youth in Aizu.

The castle tower of Tsurugajo is the largest in eastern Japan. It is second only to Edo Castle (the imperial palace) in castle area size. Aizu is the only place in all of Japan where the castle tower roof features red tiles.

Modern Japan began with the tragedy of the Aizu samurai and ordinary people. After the war in Aizu, though the samurai no longer existed in Japan, Aizuwakamatsu preserved the spirit of the samurai to this day, by continuing to teach the children of Aizu the “Aizu Clan Precepts”.

A tea house built by Sen Shoan, the son of Sen-no-Rikyu. In order to enter the tea house, all swords had to be removed. Though the class system during the time of the samurai was strict, only in the world of the tea room was there equality. You can enjoy drinking green tea here.

The main event is the Aizu Clan parade, which features historical samurai figures. The parade starts at Tsurugajo Castle, and travels around the city.

Reenactment! Land of the Samurai

Reenactment! Land of the Samurai The tomb of Saito Hajime (later known as Fujita Goro) can be found at Amidaji Temple in Nanokama-chi. As captain of the Shinsengumi, he fought to the end alongside the Aizu clan against the new government army. Saito Hajime is well known even in foreign countries, and has been portrayed in manga, anime, and movies.

The Aizu Clan was able to resist the onslaught of the new government for one month during the Boshin Civil War. Evidence of castle technologies from the siege can still be found all around the grounds.

The support beams of the corridor bridge could be easily cut and removed, and the high stone walls helped to ward off enemy invasion

The Kita-de-maru that served as the entrance to the castle was made very strong, in order to block invasion by enemy forces

Inari Shrine, located on the castle grounds of Tsurugajo, is known as a spot of power, which protected the castle

Oyakuen was originally used as the villa of the Aizu lord, but was later used by the second lord of Aizu as a medicinal herb garden to save the people of Aizu. Though the Aizu clan became the first in Japan to export valuable Korean ginseng to China, they were also able to export the plant cultivation research done in Oyakuen. You may also enjoy Japanese tea in the garden’s small tea house. Reservations required

During the Boshin war, 16 and 17 year old samurai were assigned to a military brigade in order to protect their home, Aizu. However, defeated by the modern weapons of the new government forces, the boys were forced to escape to Iimoriyama. From there, they saw what appeared to be the castle tower wreathed in flames. Though the boys discussed with each other the best course of action, they chose the noble death of the samurai, and committed seppuku.

Although Japanese sake and cuisine are held in high regard all over the world, it is the sake produced here in Fukushima Prefecture that has been ranked number one in Japan at the national sake contest for the last three years. Moreover, more than half of the sake in this contest Fukushima sake is produced by Aizu breweries. Aizu sake is so delicious because of the basin-specific climate, and pure groundwater.

Merchants and historical buildings that supported the revivalEdo era buildings which survived the Boshin Civil war still exist, as do a number of European-style houses and warehouses which were built after the war. It is in these preserved buildings that the Aizu original industries of the samurai era were revived by merchants, and still thrive today.

Handmade Soba Noodles Aizu produces fine-quality sobako (buckwheat flour) that offers excellent aroma and flavor.

Kiriya Sho

Bodara-niCod fillets dried to a rock-like hardness are

softened in water and stewed in soy sauce and sugar for many hours until the meat and bones are soft enough to eat.

KozuyuA hearty soup made from dried scallop stock and seasoned with salt and soy sauce. The soup contains taro, carrots, shiitake mushrooms, and other vegetables, plus tiny balls of wheat gluten called mamefu. Kozuyu is a regional specialty and a must for wedding feasts in Aizu.

Ramen has long been a very popular dish in Aizu, as evidenced by the fact that the region originated the Kitakata Ramen, one of the top three types of ramen in Japan.

Medetaiya Ipputei
