Cette reprise de la Semaine de la Critique à Metropolis s’ouvre avec Nos batailles de Guillaume Senez, qui dresse le portrait d’un homme (magnifique Romain Duris) à la recherche d’un équilibre en vie familiale et engagement syndical. L’exploration de la cellule familiale est d’ailleurs un sujet qui anime plusieurs cinéastes de cette sélection. Pour sa première fois derrière la caméra, le comédien Paul Dano s’attache avec brio au délitement d’une famille américaine dans les années 60 avec Wildlife, magnifiquement interprété par Carey Mulligan et Jake Gyllenhaal. Le couple est également au coeur de One Day de Zsófia Szilágyi, qui signe un thriller familial ou 24h dans la vie d’une mère face à la dictature du quotidien. A l’opposé, c’est la fuite d’une femme, que la cinéaste Agnieszka Smoczynska explore dans Fuga, un thriller psychanalytique aux confins du fantastique. Le point de départ de Chris the Swiss est aussi le lien familial, celui de la réalisatrice avec son cousin, jeune journaliste retrouvé assassiné en plein conflit yougoslave. En associant animation et documentaire, Anja Kofmel pose un regard sidérant sur ce récent conflit armé. Deux cinéastes filment l’amour qui se heurte à la réalité sociale. Sir de Rohena Gera joue avec les codes de la comédie romantique pour proposer une réflexion subtile sur la capacité de l’amour à perturber l’ordre social établi. Dans son puissant premier film Shéhérazade, Jean-Bernard Marlin nous plonge dans le milieu de la prostitution marseillaise, où naît une passion amoureuse tout aussi romantique que violente.

Cette programmation s’aventure aussi sur des chemins de traverse grâce à des visions du monde tout aussi jubilatoires que détonantes. A l’image de Woman at War, un film à l’énergie contagieuse tout comme son héroïne qui mène une guerre pour protéger une planète en danger. Ou de Guy, chanteur de variété sur le déclin, interprété par Alex Lutz, également réalisateur, qui porte sur son personnage un regard tendre et plein d’humour. Avec Diamantino, le duo Abrantes et Schmidt réalisent une farce fantasque et queer sur le monde du football à travers un personnage librement inspiré de Cristiano Ronaldo, dont le regard candide questionne la montée du nationalisme au Portugal. Enfin, Les propositions esthétiques radicales du programme de courts métrages signés Mandico, Labbé et Zois ouvrent de nouveaux mondes merveilleux et démoniaques.

This year’s rerun of Cannes Critics' Week at Metropolis opens with Our Struggles directed by Guillaume Senez, which portrays a man (the magnificent Romain Duris) in search of balance between his family life and union activism. The exploration of the family unit is the subject tackled by many filmmakers in this year’s selection. For his first film as a director, actor Paul Dano brilliantly tackles the disintegration of an American family in the 60s with Wildlife, admirably portrayed by Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal.

The couple is also in the core of One Day by Zsófia Szilágyi, who directs a family thriller or 24 hours in the life of a mother facing the dictatorship of everyday life. On the opposite side, it’s the escape of a woman that filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczynska explores in Fuga, a psychoanalytic thriller that borderlines fantasy. The starting point of Chris the Swiss is also the family link that ties the director with her cousin, a young journalist found assassinated in the middle of the Yugoslav conflict. Combining animation and documentary, Anja Kofmel takes a staggering look at this recent armed conflict.

Two filmmakers film love that clashes with social reality. Sir by Rohena Gera plays with the codes of romantic comedy to offer a subtle reflection on the capacity of love to disrupt an established social order. In his powerful first film Shéhérazade, Jean-Bernard Marlin plunges us into the middle of Marseille’s prostitution ring, where a passionate love story – equally as romantic as it is violent – is born.

This programme also ventures on side roads through visions of the world that are both jubilant and explosive. Just like Woman at War, a film with a contagious energy like its heroine who is waging a war to protect a planet in danger. Or Guy, a varieties singer on decline, played by Alex Lutz, who is also the director of the film, offering a tender look at his character, that is also full of humor. With Diamantino, the duo Abrantes and Schmidt direct a whimsical and queer farce on the world of football through a character freely inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo, whose candid look questions the rise of nationalism in Portugal. Lastly, the radical aesthetic proposals of the short films program signed by Mandico, Labbé and Zois pave the way to new enchanting and demoniac worlds.

Son second film Nos Batailles est présenté en séance spéciale à Cannes pour la 57ème Semaine de la Critique.

Duarte Coimbra est né en 1996 à Lisbonne (Portugal). Il a obtenu son diplôme en Réalisation Cinématographique de l’École de Théâtre et de Cinéma de Lisbonne (ESTC.) Amor, Avenidas Novas, produit au sein de l’école est le premier film qu’il a réalisé.

Manel idealizes love, inspired by his parents' relationship. Out of compassion, he hands over his double mattress to Nicolau. On the way back, he invades a film set where a group of young women count among the film crew. One of them is Rita. The encounter has a profound effect on Manel who sinks into a magical feeling of passion.

Duarte Coimbra was born in 1996 in Lisbon (Portugal), and has a degree in Cinema Directing at the Lisbon Theatre and Film School (ESTC). 'Amor, Avenidas Novas', produced within the school, is his first film as director.

Ariel gets involved in a teenager's civil arrest, who is accused of stealing a phone. A mob surrounds the young man and some curse and beat him, some defend him. The police isn't showing up. Ariel has to decide what side he is on.

Felipe Gálvez was born in Santiago in 1983 and graduated from the Universidad del Cine, Argentina. He directed short films and worked as an editor in many feature films. He is developing his first feature film, 'Los Colonos'.

Flurin Giger, born in Lucerne in 1995, is a Swiss writer, director and actor. In 2016, he directed his first film, the short film 'Ruah', selected for the short film competition at the Venice International Film Festival. He is currently working on his first feature 'The Last Field' (working title).

Anja Kofmel était sa cousine. Petite, elle admirait ce jeune homme ténébreux. Devenue adulte, elle décide d'enquêter pour découvrir ce qui s’est passé et comprendre l'implication réelle de Chris dans un conflit manipulé par des intérêts souvent inavoués.

Anja Kofmel est née en 1982 en Suisse. Après avoir suivi des cours à l'Université des Arts de Zurich (ZHdK), elle étudie l'animation à l'Ecole de Design et d'Art de Lucerne (HSLU). En 2008, elle a reçu son diplôme en design visuel. Son film de diplôme très acclamé Chrigi traitait du même sujet que son nouvel anima-doc Chris the Swiss.

In 2008, she received her diploma in visual design. Her highly acclaimed diploma film 'Chrigi' dealt with the same topic as her recently finished anima-doc 'Chris the Swiss'.
