2015 EIU WOMEN’S SOCCER10

Jason Cherry was named head women’s soccer coach on Aug. 1, 2013 after spending the 2012 season as assistant coach with the Panthers. In his first season at the helm of the program, he was named OVC Coach of the Year – becoming only the fourth coach in conference history to earn the award in their first season. Cherry led the Panthers to the OVC Tournament after being absent from the tournament in 2012 for the first time in school history. In 2013 Cherry coached Meagan Radloff and Lauren Hoppensteadt to All-OVC honors. Radloff was the first Panther to earn first-team accolades since 2010 while Hoppensteadt was named to the second team, respectively.

In 2014, his second year at the helm, the Panthers were hit by the injury bug in goal as four different players were listed to play the position with three seeing time in goal and one player missing the entire season due to injury. Cherry made several adjustments midseason as EIU finished strong with Radloff once again earning All-OVC honors for EIU. During the 2011 season, Cherry was an assistant coach at East Carolina and helped the Pirates post an 11-8-1 overall record and advance to the Conference USA Tournament Semifinals after being absent from the tournament since 2008. Prior to ECU, he was the top assistant coach at Western Illinois from 2008-11. Cherry assisted WIU to a 26-22-9 overall record in three seasons including a 15-9-2 mark in conference action. In 2010, he coached goalkeeper Laura Atkinson to Summit League First Team honors while helping the Fighting Leathernecks post a 0.84 goals against average – the second lowest in WIU single-season history. The 2010 squad posted nine shutouts, tied for the most in school history. From 2005-08, Cherry served as the associate head men’s soccer coach at Bethel College. As the goalkeeper coach, he assisted the team to a 35-21-12 overall record and a Mid-Central College Conference Regular-Season and Tournament Title in 2005. Bethel advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in 2005 and 2006 with Cherry on the staff. Cherry has also coached at the club level, working as the head club coach for the Junior Irish Soccer Club (2002-08) in South Bend, Ind., and the head club coach for the Indiana Invaders FC (2005). He has 10 years of experience at the high school level as the assistant coach/goalkeepers coach at Penn High School and Clay High School. Cherry played collegiately at Goshen College (NAIA) from 1993-94. The South Bend, Ind., native earned a bachelor’s degree in general studies from Western Illinois in the spring of 2011.

He brings more than 10 years of coaching experience at the collegiate, club, high school and national team level to EIU. Prior to joining the staff at Eastern Illinois Gonzalez was a volunteer assistant coach at North Dallas HS and a personal youth coach from 2011-14 while working full-time with Young Life. He was the head coach of the F.C. Dallas U10-11 team from 2011-12. Gonzalez was a varsity assistant coach at Bethel College from 2007-10 after previously spending one season as the junior varsity head coach. Gonzalez served as the Junior Irish Head Club Coach from 2006-10, coaching a range of age groups. He was an assistant coach for the “Mandyn” Soccer School and Aguascalientes Team in Aguascalientes, Mexico from 2002-03. 1999 • Record: 11-9OVC Regular Season and Tournament Champions

In only their second year in the OVC, the Panthers posted an undefeated 5-0 record in conference action to capture their first regular-season title. EIU would eventually go on to win their first tournament title as well.

Two players in Ida Hakansson and Cara LeMaster would end up earning individual accolades at the conclusion of the season. Hakansson was named ‘Player of the Year’ while LeMaster was tabbed the ‘Freshman of the Year’.

2000 • Record: 15-4-1OVC Regular Season Champions

In 2000, the Panthers again would post a 5-0 record in OVC play to capture the regular-season title for the second consecutive year. The 15 wins is the second most in single-season history behind the 1996 squad that won 16 matches.

After defeating Morehead State 3-1 in the first match of the conference tournament, the Panthers were upset in the tournament finale by Tennessee Tech, 1-0, in an overtime thriller.

Beth Liesen was named the conference’s ‘Freshman of the Year’ after leading the Panthers in scoring with 33 points. She posted 15 goals, the fifth most in single-season history, to go along with three assists.

Devon Bissel was named ‘OVC Player of the Year’ after recording 10 assists and three goals. Bissel’s 10 assists are tied for the sixth most in EIU single-season history. In addition to the player awards, head coach Steve Ballard was named the ‘OVC Coach of the Year’ for the first time in his coaching career.

2001 • Record: 14-6OVC Tournament Champions

The 2001 campaign marked the beginning of four consecutive OVC Tournament Championships for the Panthers.

Beth Liesen and Devon Bissell continued to lead a high-powered offense in 2001, combining to score 59 of the team’s 128 points. Liesen scored 18 goals and added five assists while Bissell recorded an EIU single-season record 16 assists. Liesen also set a conference single-season record with nine game-winning goals.

The Panthers advanced to their first NCAA Tournament, facing Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., on Nov. 16. The Fighting Irish handed the Panthers a 2-0 loss.

2002 • Record: 12-8-2OVC Tournament Champions

In 2002, the Panthers won their second consecutive OVC Tournament Title. Southeast Missouri State won the regular-season title in 2001 and 2002, but lost to the Panthers both years in the conference tournament finale.

Beth Liesen again paced the Panthers in scoring with 26 points (nine goals, eight assists).

EIU faced another team from Indiana in the NCAA Tournament, facing Purdue in South Bend, Ind., on Nov. 5. Arguably the closest game in posteason history for EIU, the Panthers took the Boilermakers to double overtime only to loss the match, 3-1, on penalty kicks.

2003 • Record: 11-6-5OVC Tournament Champions

As far as records are concerned, the 2003 season was one of the most successful in OVC history.

As a team, the Panthers set three single-season records highlighted by the squad scoring 50 goals - the most in OVC history.

Individually, Beth Liesen set seven single-season OVC records on her way to capturing ‘Player of the Year’ honors. She scored 49 points, including 20 goals.

Conference newcomer Samford won the regular-season title, but the Panthers would win their third tournament title in a row. In the NCAA Tournament, EIU dropped a 1-0 contest to Missouri in Columbia, Mo., on Nov. 14.

2004 • Record: 13-6-2OVC Tournament Champions

The 2004 squad captured an unprecedented fourth consecutive OVC Tournament title.

Despite the graduation of arguably the best player in conference history in Beth Liesen, the Panthers simply reloaded. Michelle Steinhaus led the Panthers in scoring with 26 points (10 goals, six assists) while being named the ‘OVC Freshman of the Year’.

For the third time in four years, the Panthers were sent to South Bend, Ind., in the NCAA Tournament where they would face Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish defeated the Panthers, 4-0, on Nov. 12.
