Matthias Schmitt

Matthias Schmitt wurde 1958 in Würzburg geboren und bekam seinen ersten Musikunterricht bereits im Alter von vier Jahren.

Nach dem Abitur absolvierte er seine musikalische Ausbildung am Zilcher-Konservatorium der Stadt Würzburg sowie an der Hochschule für Musik Würzburg bei Siegfreid Fink (Schlagzeug), Joachim Ludwig (angewandte Komposition) und Otto Hümmer (Klavier).

Nach dem Staatsexamen 1984 hat seine Karriere viele musikalische Stationen durchlaufen: Lehrtätigkeit an Zahlreichen Musikschulen, Mitwirkender verschiedener Orchester, zahlreiche Auftritte in Fund- und Fernsehen, u.a. als Mitglied der Band „Relax“, Dozent an diversen Hochschulen, Gründung einer eigenen Musikschule.

Seit 1996 hat er sich auf die Komposition von Percussion- Stücken spezialisiert. Seine Arbeiten zählen zu den berühmtesten Marimba-Werken auf dem Musikmarkt und werden weltweit aufgeführt.

MATTHIAS SCHMITT(Germany) was born in Würzburg in 1958 and was introduced to music at the age of 4. As many of his generation, he got involved in popular music as a listener and musician in bands. At the end of the 70´s, Schmitt came in contact with the composer and percussion teacher, Siegfried Fink wich led to studies and greater involvement whith percussion instruments, which eventually made his career as a composer and teacher. Since 1996 Schmitt has focused on percussion music, and has created some of the most popular marimba pieces on the market, like "Ghanaia", "Sechs Miniaturen", "Corrido" and "Nocturne" to name a few. His great interest in education shows clearly in his three-volume collection "Young and Sweet (Suite)", which now are available with a CD in each volume. Genug von Ghanaia. Du hast auch andere Werke geschrieben, die mittlerweile einen festen

Platz im Repertoire vieler Marimbisten einnehmen. Deine „Sechs Miniaturen“ (Katarzyna

Mycka gewidmet) ist eines davon. In 2006 hat Evelyn Glennie die Miniaturen als einziges

Solo-Marimba Stück auf ihre neue DVD aufgenommen.

Erzähl über dieses Projekt.

Da gibt es leider gar nicht so viel zu erzählen.

Ich erhielt in 2004, glaube ich, einen Anruf aus Luxemburg von dem Manager der Luxemburger

Philharmonie, ob ich mit der Aufnahme von den Miniaturen auf einer Orchester-DVD mit Evelyn

Glennie einverstanden wäre. Natürlich war ich einverstanden, mehr als das, ich war total glücklich von

einem Weltstar wie Evelyn Glennie "performed" zu werden auf einer DVD mit Werken von Beethoven,

Masson und Vivaldi.

Erstes sakrales Werk für Chor und Marimba

Bachchor Würzburg hat Matthias Schmitts „Agnus Dei“ auf CD aufgenommen

Im Mai des vergangenen Jahres hat der Bachchor Würzburg unter der Leitung von Christian Kabitz mit der Solistin Evgeniya Kavaldzhieva an der Marimba das „Agnus Dei“ von Matthias Schmitt uraufgeführt.

Dieses viersätzige Werk für Chor und Marimba ist das erste große sakrale Werk aus seiner Feder, ja sogar die erste Komposition dieser Art überhaupt. „Die menschliche Stimme und Marimba sind ein noch relativ neues Terrain für einen Komponisten. Beide Klangfarben ergänzen sich sehr gut zu einem manchmal homogenen wie auch kontrastreichen Zusammenspiel. Gerade die Marimba mit ihren vielen spieltechnischen Facetten ist ein nahezu unerschöpfliches Reservoir an Farben und Klängen. Ihr Klang ist für das breite, klassische Konzertpublikum immer noch neu und birgt viele Überraschungen“, so der Komponist über sein 2011 komponiertes Werk.

Im Januar 2012 traf man sich wieder in der St. Johanniskirche, diesmal vor einer beeindruckenden Phalanx von Mikrofonen – das Werk sollte für den Musikverlag Norsk auf CD aufgenommen werden. „Eine echte Herausforderung für den Chor“ sagte Christian Kabitz, der einige Erfahrungen mit solchen Situationen hat, „manche Partien sind extrem schwer, man muss ständig 100% Konzentration bringen!“

Drei Tagen waren eingeplant – aber schon nach deren zweien sagte Tonmeister Jürgen Rummel: „Ich habe alles im Kasten“ - und das Ergebnis kann sich hören lassen – hier einige Ausschnitte aus diesem interessanten Werk, das im Herbst 2012 auf CD erscheinen wird. Der Bachchor und sein Dirigent sind zu Recht sehr stolz.

John RUTTER

John Rutter studierte Musik am Clare College in Cambridge und war von 1975 bis 1979 dessen Musikdirektor. 1981 gründete er seinen eigenen Chor, die Cambridge Singers, die er seither leitet, ein professioneller Kammerchor, der sich hauptsächlich auf Plattenaufnahmen konzentriert. Rutter gilt gegenwärtig als einer der bedeutendsten und populärsten Komponisten von Chor- und Kirchenmusik. Musikalisch kann er der Postmoderne zugeordnet werden. Seine Werke sind in der europäischen Kadenzharmonik verankert, behandeln diesen Bezugsrahmen aber höchst souverän und originell. Eine vielschichtige Harmonik und Rhythmik, die auch Jazz-Elemente aufnimmt, und ein großer melodischer Erfindungsreichtum geben Rutters Musik suggestive Kraft. Dabei werden auch textliche

und melodische Zitate aus weit zurückliegenden Epochen auf überraschend frische Art eingearbeitet. Sein Œuvre umfasst Werke für Chor, Orchester und Kammermusik; darüber hinaus war er Mitherausgeber verschiedener Sammlungen von Chormusik, etwa der vierbändigen Weihnachtsliedersammlung Carols for Choirs, die er mit Sir David Willcocks herausgab, oder der Reihe Oxford Choral Classics. Heute nehmen Komposition und Dirigieren gleich großen Raum in Rutters Leben ein. Als Gastdirigent und -dozent stand er bereits in vielen Konzertsälen, Universitäten, Kirchen, Musikfestivals und Konferenzen in Europa, Afrika, Nord-und Mittelamerika und Australien am Pult. Rutter ist seit 1980 Ehrenmitglied des Westminster Choir College an der Princeton-Universität und seit 1988 Mitglied der Guild of Church Musicians. 1996 erhielt er das Lambeth Doctorate of Music in Anerkennung seiner Verdienste um die Kirchenmusik, 2007 wurde Rutter Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) und 2013 mit der Orlando di Lasso-Medaille1 des Allgemeinen Cäcilien-Verbandes für Deutschland (ACV) ausgezeichnet. Sein Auftragswerk für das goldene Thronjubiläum von Königin Elisabeth, eine Vertonung des 150. Psalms, kam beim Erntedankgottesdienst in der St Paul's Cathedral in London zur Uraufführung.

Die “Amis du Chant” und ihr Publikum kennen J. Rutter, hauptsächlich durch die seit 1992

organisierten « Christmas Carols »-Konzerte, als Komponist und Arrangeur von zahlreichen

dabei vorgetragenen ‘Carols’.

Das Programm dieses Konzertes soll zeigen, dass sich das Werk von J.Rutter keineswegs auf

diese gefälligen und leicht zugänglichen (Weihnachts-)lieder beschränkt.

The Requiem by John Rutter is a musical setting of parts of the Latin Requiem with added psalms in English, completed in 1985. The setting utilises a choir with an orchestral accompaniment, along with a soprano soloist. The Requiem was first performed on 13 October 1985 at Lovers' Lane United Methodist Church, Dallas, Texas (Director of Music: Allen Pote) by the Sanctuary Choir and orchestra. Movements 1, 2, 4, and 7 were first performed on the 14th of March 1985 at Fremont Presbyterian Church, Sacramento, California (Minister of Music: Mel Olson) by the Sanctuary Choir and ensemble. Both performances were conducted by the composer. The Lord is my Shepherd was originally written in 1976 as a separate anthem.

The first movement consists of the Introit from the Requiem (Requiem aeternam) and the Kyrie. The second movement is entitled Out of the Deep, and is based onPsalm 130, a psalm commonly used at Anglican funerals. It contains a prominent cello solo written in C minor. The third movement is the motet Pie Jesu. It begins with a soprano soloist singing with a very light accompaniment, with only slight involvement of the chorus echoing the words "Dona eis requiem, Dona eis sempiternam requiem". The fourth movement is the Sanctus (with Benedictus) and, characteristically, it is a bright, lively, and exclamatory movement which is brightly orchestrated with bells, flute, and oboe and occasional timpani recalling the passage in Old Testament scripture in Isaiah chapter 6, and the worship of the six-winged seraphim in the heavenly throne-room of God. The fifth movement is the Agnus Dei of the Requiem. The sixth movement is Psalm 23, another psalm commonly used at Anglican funerals. The seventh movement includes words from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer Burial Service ("I heard a voice from heaven...") and the communion chant from Requiem (Lux aeterna).

John Rutter From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia John Milford Rutter CBE (born 24 September 1945) is a British composer, conductor, editor, arranger and record producer, mainly of choral music.

Born in London, the son of an industrial chemist and his wife, Rutter grew up living over the Globe pub on London'sMarylebone Road.[1]

He was educated at Highgate School, where his fellow pupils included John Tavener, Howard Shelley,Brian Chapple and Nicholas Snowman;

[2] he then

read music at Clare College, Cambridge, where he was a member of the choir. He served as director of music at Clare College from 1975 to 1979 and led the choir to international prominence.

In 1981, Rutter founded his own choir, the Cambridge Singers, which he conducts and with which he has made many recordings of sacred choral repertoire (including his own works), particularly under his own label Collegium Records. He resides at Duxford in Cambridgeshire and frequently conducts many choirs and orchestras around the world.

In 1980, he was made an honorary Fellow of Westminster Choir College, Princeton, and in 1988 a Fellow of the Guild of Church Musicians. In 1996, the Archbishop of Canterbury conferred a Lambeth Doctorate of Music upon him in recognition of his contribution to church music. In 2008, he was made an honorary Bencher of theMiddle Temple while playing a significant role in the 2008 Temple Festival.

From 1985 to 1992, Rutter suffered severely from myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME, or chronic fatigue syndrome), which restricted his output; after 1985 he stopped writing music on commission, as he was unable to guarantee meeting deadlines.

Rutter also works as an arranger and editor. As a young man he collaborated with Sir David Willcocks on four volumes of the extraordinarily successful Carols for Choirs anthology series.

He was inducted as a National Patron of Delta Omicron, an international professional music fraternity in 1985.[4][5]

Rutter is also a Vice President of the Joyful Company of Singers.

In 2011 Rutter was invited to compose an anthem for the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton - "This is The Day".[6]

Rutter's compositions are chiefly choral, and include Christmas carols, anthems and extended works such as a Gloria, the Requiem and the Magnificat.

The world premiere of Rutter's Requiem (1985), and of his authoritative edition of Fauré's Requiem, took place with the Fox Valley Festival Chorus, in Illinois. In 2002, his setting of Psalm 150, commissioned for the Queen's Golden Jubilee, was performed at the Jubilee thanksgiving service in St Paul's Cathedral, London. Similarly, he was commissioned to write a new anthem, "This is the day", for the Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011, performed at Westminster Abbey during the service.

Dr. Rutter conducted The Gift of Life: Six Canticles of Creation in its world premiere at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas on April 19, 2015. The piece, composed of six movements (including the previously composed "Hymn to the Creator of Light"), was commissioned by David and Miranda Lind in memory of Mr. Lind's mother, and in honor of Terry Price, the director of the church's music department.

He has also written an opera for young people called Bang!

Rutter's work is published principally by Oxford University Press in England and by Hinshaw Music in the US. It has been recorded by many choirs, but he conducts his own recordings principally on his Collegium label.

Rutter's music is eclectic, showing the influences of the French and English choral traditions of the early 20th century as well as of light music and American classic songwriting. Almost every choral anthem and hymn that he writes

accompaniment in addition to the standard piano/organ accompaniment, using various different instrumentations such as strings only, strings and woodwinds or full orchestra with brass and percussion.

Despite composing and conducting much religious music, Rutter told the US television programme 60 Minutes in 2003 that he was not a particularly religious man yet still deeply spiritual and inspired by the spirituality of sacred verses and prayers.

Minutes programme, which was broadcast a week before Christmas 2003, were Rutter's popularity with choral groups in the United States, Britain and other parts of the world and his composition Mass of the Children, written after the sudden death of his son Christopher while a student at Clare College, Cambridge, where Rutter himself had studied.

In a 2009 interview[citation needed]

Rutter discussed his understanding of 'genius' and its unique ability to transform lives – whether that genius is communicated in the form of music or other media. He likened the purity of music to that of mathematics and connected the two with a reference to the discovery made by the early Greeks that frequencies of harmonic pitches are related by whole-number ratios.

Rutter's music is very popular, particularly in the USA.[citation needed]

In the UK it receives a more mixed reception: most hold him in high regard, as illustrated by the following quotation from a review in the London Evening Standard (25/09/2005): "For the infectiousness of his melodic invention and consummate craftsmanship, Rutter has few peers," while one conservative British composer, David Arditti, didn't regard him as a sufficiently "serious" composer, saying that Rutter is "hard to take seriously, because of the way in which his sheer technical facility or versatility leads to a superficial, unstable crossover style which is neither quite classical nor pop, and which tends towards mawkish sentimentality in his sugarily-harmonised and orchestrated melodies."

scale works – particularly the Gloria (1974), Requiem (1985) and Magnificat (1990) – are also well established in the choral repertoire."[11]

Michael Töpel Michael Töpel (* 1958 in Bremen) ist ein deutscher Komponist und Musikwissenschaftler.

Leben[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

Er studierte Komposition, Klavier, Musiktheorie, Musikwissenschaft und Schulmusik für Gymnasium in Bremen und Lübeck. Von 1984 bis 1988 unterrichtete er an der Musikhochschule Lübeck. Seit 1988 ist er als Lektor in einem Musikverlag für Neue Musik tätig. Michael Töpel publizierte neben einen eigenen Kompositionen auch Klavierauszüge und edierte Werke, darunter Erstausgaben u. a. von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Johannes Brahms, Hugo Distler und Jean Barraqué.

Außerdem veröffentlichte er ein Fachbuch zur Musiktheorie sowie Buchbeiträge, Aufsätze und Interviews in der Fachpresse, er verfasste CD-Booklettexte sowie Beiträge für die Musik-Enzyklopädien MGG und The New Grove. Neben seiner kompositorischen Tätigkeit entstehen auch belletristische Arbeiten in Form von Lyrik und Kurzprosa.
